It was a perfect morning hiking up. The trek opens up between 6am to.7am depending on mist status. We reached the entry point around 7am. The road till teh entry point is well cemented and even the entry point has a decent parking space too. There is a good view point at the start too. It's a hike of almost 4km one way upto the peak with elevation gain of 450m. The route starts with a nice forest coverage walk and then through the meadows and finally last stretch of steep hike under the sun! The view from the top is definitely worth up the hike.

We attempted this trek while visiting Coorg. We decided to drive in two wheelers till the base point from Madikeri, do the trek and return back to Madikeri on the same day to catch the return bus. But this was not a very good decision as the trek and the long drive completely exhausted the riders and really took a toll on some people's health. In case you want to attempt this trek from Madikeri, it is best to hire a cab with a driver so that you get some rest in your return journey.
Another point was it is ideal to complete this trek before the mid day but we reached the base point so late that we had to do the trek in the scorching heat. Also the road till the base point being super skiddy is a real challenge to ride there with a pillion rider. Somehow we managed to reach the trek start point at around 10 am. We got some water bottles from the only shop at the base point and started our trek.
Initially we took a nearly flat path through the forest. This part was shady and enjoyable till we reached the forest checkpost. Here we had to pay Rs 250 entry fee per person. They checked our bags for liquor and any prohibited items. We even had to submit our speakers which we collected while returning. From this point we faced the scorching heat. The long trees gave path to short shrubs and these hardly shielded the sunrays. Initially we went through a gently inclined path through the shrubs with little to no shade. The time being winter we had little to no greenery around us...but the view was still beautiful.
We came up till the boulder point and then the path turned a bit steep. We got a small forest section again before our final climb and it is here that we rested for quite sometime. After sufficient rest and hydration we did our final climb till the peak. This climb was super slippery and we had to be extra careful while both climbing up and climbing down this section. The view from the peak was indeed beautiful but yes, it lacked greenery due to the season. Also the lack of shade made it a little less enjoyable even for a habitual trekker like me. In spite of all these the feeling of standing at the highest point of Coorg is something which made every hardship faced in the climb worthy. I won't say the trek is difficult...it was pretty easy. We were mostly exhausted due to the heat than the actual trek.
I would strongly advice people to either go on or post monsoons but if in case you want to attempt it in winter try to start the trek early morning to avoid the sun. Also please carry at least 2 litres of water in your daypack (as there are literally no water sources in the trek) and wear proper trekking shoes.

Have to take local jeeps, even though expensive, to avoid messing ones own vehicle due crass roads and steep uphill drives. This is a viewpoint with a very little trek, carrying camera was worth it. A nominal 25/- was collected by the State Govt, maybe for upkeep charges. Sunrise and Sunset are the best times to visit this place. This place is best avoided during sunny/ hot weather. Also advisable not to litter.

The trek is gentle to start with but quickly gets steep. The views are beautiful - 360 degrees and above the clouds. The last km or so, is quite steep. My son and I got bitten by leeches, so please go prepared (carry salt, apply dettol/savlon on the legs). I also liked the fact that they take an inventory of any plastic that you carry and take a Rs 100 deposit and it is returned only when you come back with all of those plastic items. The trail was really free of any litter unlike other treks we have been on. The road to the base is not great, we parked about a km before the actual start point and walked up.

Information to trekking at this place is scanty. Just get there which is pretty easy. Despite roads under repair and distances to trek increasing correspondingly, there are jeeps available that will get you there. Ultimately the trek is worth it. Its beautiful landscape

Go Early in the morning to avoid the sun and have sufficient water. Don't give up till you find the flag at the top of the hill.

The trail is 3 kms long to the top, from the forest check-post. Carry at least 2 liters of water per head - although there is a stream at camp-site that is 1.5 kms short of the peak. The serious climb starts after crossing the camp-site.
We saw children about 10-12 years enjoying the climb. For an easy going pace, 2 hours up and 2 hours down is reasonable, with an hour spent at the summit. The views and the quiet at the summit were the best parts.

We stayed at Madikeri and took the 6.45am bus (Shamla bus) to Kakkabe (private bus stand near the bus station in madikeri). From Kakkabe we took a rickshaw to the Nalkunadu Palace, where the trek started. The beginning is easy, it's a normal path. In this month there are little leeches if you just follow the path (we took a wrong turn, ended up in the bushes and we found 5 leeches per feet, so don't make that mistake..). After paying 50 rupees per person, we started the 'real' trek. Firstly you wander between the trees, after which you wander in open fields. This is an amazing view already. The last part of the trek is a bit more challenging, because you have to 'climb' a semi stiff path and the path contains of loose rocks. The end of the hike is very rewarding. The view is breathtaking and it's really peaceful. Don't miss this trek if you are in coorg!

I would like to spend few days doing some kind of multi-day trekking in this area. Does anyone know of a good local guide that can help me to organise a tailored trek?
Skrevet 12. oktober 2019
Yes this is the perfect time to go and you will have a lot of fun if the atmosphere is very clean right now.
