The Kailasanatha (also known as Kailasanathar) Temple that is located in Kanchipuram India. This temple has exquisite hand carved stone - in both sandstone and granite. The exterior wall of the temple is primarily sandsone and the some of the interior structures are made of granite along with sandstone. As can be seen from the photos, the hand-carved artwork is very inticate and beautiful to look as.
The temple grounds inside the exterior wall is quite large and takes time to look at the many carvings - all of which are very interesting. Some of the temple structures involve climbing some steps up to see inside, so care must be taken while going up to see inside. The Kailasanatha Temple is definitely worth the visit.

Built in early 8th century by the last great Pallava king this Shiva temple is filled with beautiful carvings and frescoes. There are nearly 60 smaller shrines withing this temple. Its size and layout seem just perfect to me. It is interesting to visit. The temple is built out of sandstone except some structural elements built of granite. It represents the evolution of the style of Hindu temples from cave stone carvings.

Narasimhavarman II (also called Rajasimha), along with his queen Rangapataka, built the Kailashanatha temple at the Pallava capital, Kanchipuram in 700CE. This is technically the first pure stone structural temple (as opposed to cave-excavated and monolithic) in India. Structural temples are those where rocks are cut and shaped separately and then interlocked to attain the desired size and shape of edifice.
The Kailashanatha temple featured additions by a later descendant as well.
The temple was covered with murals and sculptures from Day one. The outer murals got washed away over time with sun and rain.
In 1915, the Public Works Department took up the responsibility of conserving this heritage beauty. They found the sandstone sculptures deteriorating (duh!) and thus decided to plaster them with lime. Like a boss, they plastered over the paintings as well. Thankfully, the ASI stepped in, albeit too late, and began the process of removing the lime from them. Even then, nearly 90% of the murals have been lost. Today, the temple stands heavily touched by ‘conservationists’.

The temple is the oldest in Kanchipuram and was constructed during the seventh century by the pallava kings. Going around the main sanctum is believed to stop the rebirth. What ever it is, it is a wonderful experience. This is a must visit in Kanchipuram.

Hello! Thanks for your help in advance.
I have a question: Kailasanthar temple, is it open between 12 and 4 or does it also shut like the rest of the temples - online there are conflicting information - i wanted to know only if you know through recent personal experience. Thank you, Janki

When we went, we had to get there early as it indeed shuts at 12 for a few hours.
