This was a great experience, learning about the history of Dunwich unlocked a hidden gem of England's past lost to time and the cold uncaring sea. A fascinating journey from Vikings and Bishops to a sea port of the ages only to be claimed by the very sea that made the settlement prosper.
The museum is set out well and don't miss out on the upstairs area.

Lovely little museum, giving a good insight into the disappearance of this important port. Friendly staff and dog friendly

Small museum charting the demise of what was a huge influential port on the East Coast. Lottery funded and encourages contributions but essentially free to visit if you're on a budget - no one is excluded here. Lots of artefacts, maps and images to see, Don't miss the upstairs displays - well worth viewing. Super friendly and very knowledgeable lady on duty when we visited (originally from Texas we believe). Highly recommended.

We were only in the locality for one whole day so had to be a little choosey where to visit. A museum is always a great choice when it's raining and this little gem did not disappoint. Fascinating story of the history of Dunwich with lots of finds to see and stories to hear. Next time we hope to make it to the beach and hear the ghostly bells!

Very interesting and very informative. So much to read about and learn how Dunwich was so large and how the power of the sea changed its fortunes

Athelstan Museum is located on St James Street, Dunwich, is open 7 days a week (between 11.30 and 16.30), is dog friendly and does not charge an entrance fee (donations welcome or buy something from the shop).
The Museum is small but full of interesting information and artefacts and its surprising the amount of information packed into a small space.
It tells the history of Dunwich over the centuries, from a Roman fort to the capital of a Saxon Kingdom, to 11th Century port (one of the greatest on the east coast) with its own mint, most of it being lost to the North Sea and up to the present day tiny village of barely more than 120 people and a few offshore fishing boats.
In addition they run a series of short term exhibitions with interactive effects for all; and the museum volunteers are there to explain and elaborate as necessary.
All in all, well worth a visit if you are in the area and want to know more about its history.

If you weren't convinced about the power of the sea then pay s visit to Dunwich and its museum.
A fascinating place probably unknown to most of us. Yet it was one of the country's most important cities a thousand years ago.

We visited the museum on a Sunday and it seemed a popular place to be. Despite the small size the museum has implemented a one way system which works well. The museum is essentially two rooms one above the other. The center piece of the ground floor is the model of the village in medieval times showing how the once large town has been lost to the sea over the years. Meanwhile around the walls are some interesting finds that have been made in the area with background history of how Dunwich grew to be one of the most significant ports on the east coast before losing its port and then declining into obscurity over many years. The upper floor focusses more on the natural side of the locality with birds and animals that can be found area as well as a film show on the history of the town. Overall worth a visit and certainly worth more than the £2 suggested donation to get in.
