Yet again visited this lovely area to be met with hordes of runners and fast walkers who just arrogantly dash past anyone looking to appreciate the wonderful nature. The paths are narrow and not suitable for organised events. All these non paying people are not interested in the nature but purely use the reserve for exercise to the detriment of walkers.
It would be more suitable if such events, if they have to take place here, were held outside opening times
We have been NT members and payers for many years and object to the free use of non paying runners
Take care if you visit on a sunday morning!

Dunwich Heath and Beach, as the name suggests, is at least two things or possibly three.
We came not just to see the beach, but also because of the adjacent heath, which is spectacular.
We came on a nice weekday and there was ample parking. There is a National Trust booth. The admission is free but the parking is £6. The people at the booth were very nice. There is a cafe that is good for lunch and has clean restrooms.
The beach itself is nice. We saw several families enjoying the day out, but it was not at all crowded. Note that this is mostly a pebble beach and while there is some sand at low tide it is not that extensive. Much of the surrounding area consists of various nature preserves, so the feel is not at all commercial.
The real star of the show is the huge heath next to the beach. It is large, perhaps 50 acres and is a vast sea of pink. It's easy to walk around and your photos will look like calendar pictures.
I mentioned above a possible third attraction. Dunwich itself was one a fairly large coastal town, only much of it is now under the North Sea. The town of Dunwich itself, what remains of it, it just north of this site, with the sea continuing to chip away at its edges.
We were looking for a nice morning on the beach and we certainly enjoyed our time here.

Absolutely fantastic walk! I wish I had more time to spend here or discovered it sooner! It was very peaceful and I saw lots of wildlife which was an absolute joy

Dreadful experience. Went there early. (9.15am) to avoid the bank holiday rush to get some peace and quiet, admire the scenery and see the birds. Did I? Not likely as it was taken over by hordes of charity runners pushing us and dog to the side of the path all talking loudly and shouting at the marshals
The marshals? Miserable people who tried their hardest to deter walkers for using the main paths. If we did use the main paths we were met with a condesending "youre welcome". I should hope so indeed as Im a paid member of the National Trust and fully entitled to walk any path.
Surely as the reserve opens at 9 and closes at 6 the charity run could be held during the closed time so as to not inconvenience walkers, bird watchers and photographers of which there were many present most of whom were annoyed
National Trust---Remember your loyal members who keep you going year after year with their subscriptions.

Dunwich Heath and Beach never fail to please. From nature and beach walks to special events. My favorite time is August when the heather is out and the sea is warm.

What a beautiful unspoilt place to go for a walk. There are three very well marked trails of different lengths, which take different routes through the heathland. Even though land was very wet when we were there, the route we took was still fine. It's dog friendly too, with dog bins provided.
There is a tearoom on site, but check for opening.

Lovely peaceful spot. Walks inland and along the coast. Not NT members so prepared to pay to park. However the helpful lady in the hut let us off as we had less than 2 hours to look round before the place closed. Decent loos too. Longer would have been nice but 1 of us can't walk very far so probably OK as it was.

Fabulous views from the beach and the edge of the heath. The heather on the heath was stunning, despite about 60% of it being lost in the drought last year. We walked the dog on the beach, then along the ditch between Minsmere and the Heath back up onto the heath through the woodland. Stunning.

What a wonderful spot! Something for everyone. National Trust staff very helpful with parking and walking trails. We admired the seashore then walked around the Heath. Our number one spot on our trip

Is this a reasonable spot to swim from - e.g. any strong currents to watch out for
Skrevet 10. juni 2016
Going to answer my own question having just got back. yes it is fine to swim from if a bit stony & relatively sloping. Young children would need watching. High & Low tide marks are realtively close to each other

Usually in the Lake District and on the Lancashire moors it is September through to October, I would guess given a week or so it should be around the same time.
