Enjoyed a 2 mile walk around the heathland. The are shorter and longer walks. In the area, against the backdrop of the North Sea. Small cafe which looks fine. National Trust people are helpful. Sizewell Power Station can be seen along the coast. Area is quite remote with abundant wildlife. Work an afternoon walk.

Stayed in Dunwich with a two minute walk to this great beach and heathland. There is free parking and a great cafe with beach shop. Very clean beach with bins for recycling at start of car park. Mostly stoney beach but there is sandy areas. Near the marsh areas so great wildlife to see. Dog friendly cafe with drinking water. Super walks to Southwold along the beach. Impressed with the cleanliness.

Beach and heathland beautiful but the national Trust aspect was hideous.
£6 to park.
Cafe didn't serve hardly any food. None of the usual soups and sandwiches or quiches. The only thing available was a small sausage roll for 4.50!!
The coffee was burnt and sour, I tipped it away after a few sips
Left after 5 minutes to go to the pub instead
Don't waste your time
My top tip is to park at the beach for free or a small donation. Walk along the beach, cut up through where the NT carpark is. Then walk back through the heath to the beach
There's a lovely fish shop restaurant there and the ship Inn is great too

Despite being the site of a major medieval port (now lost be neath the waves due to coastal erosion), Dunwich is now tranquil, unspoiled natural heathland replete with birds in particular. A great place to walk, be solitary & mindful, birdwatch etc but there are facilities at the Coastguadr Lookout & decent parking although it's a bit isolated down narrow lanes as it's now on the road to nowhere.

A little café with all the usual drinks and snacks you expect to find at NT. The serving team are efficient and friendly. The sea view from the tables outside are stunning.

I spent an enjoyable afternoon here last autumn exploring the beach, a bit of the heath and enjoying a heavenly cuppa at the National Trust cafe. Parking is of course free to members and there are loads of different walks out across the heath which is a haven for wildlife. The bach is good too - wild and relatively deserted (not sure if its quite so deserted at the height of summer mind you).

Stoney beach, lovely views of walberswick and Sizewell. Visited the museum where we found out a lot about the village under the sea by a very knowledgeable lady volunteer.
Visited the greyfriars priory which was very interesting. Walked along the pathways where you could see the sea down below and saw the last gravestone remaining. Highly recommend the visit if you like history.
Saw a seal in the sea was outstanding!!

Is this a reasonable spot to swim from - e.g. any strong currents to watch out for

Going to answer my own question having just got back. yes it is fine to swim from if a bit stony & relatively sloping. Young children would need watching. High & Low tide marks are realtively close to each other

Usually in the Lake District and on the Lancashire moors it is September through to October, I would guess given a week or so it should be around the same time.
