We have just seen the first of the productions by Southwold Summer Theatre by the Sea - Fallen Angels by Noel Coward. It was quite simply just brilliant. The script will be nearly 100 years old but Coward's observations and razor sharp wit is still so appropriate today. There was a polished performance by all actors but particularly so the female actors playing the characters Julia and Jane. A lot of quick fast paced lines delivered perfectly. These two old friends swung from close girly conversation to drunken arguments beautifully, leaving the audience thinking "Yes, things can blow up like this". The cherry on the cake though was the arrival of the Lothario Maurice played by Suffolk's own Julian Harries known to us for his madcap Christmas shows for Eastern Angles. Truly a delight not to be missed. Other shows will follow - don't miss this rare night out!

We have been visiting the Southwold Summer Theatre (now known as Theatre on the Coast) for over 25 years and it has become an integral part of our summers in Southwold.
Sadly productions have become fewer and the audiences smaller but we REALLY REALLY enjoyed this week's Hello Norma Jean starring Vikki Michelle. Sadly she stumbled over a few of her lines in the first half but she and her grandson Joe carried the play admirably being on stage for nearly all of it. Well supported by other actors playing a gay love interest, a talk show host and the young Marilyn . The plot line was this elderly lady escapes her nursing home to fly to LA to announce to the world that she is the real Marilyn Monroe having faked her death all those years ago, And she did it really well! The audience was left wondering right until the very end......no spoilers here! Go and see for your self!

A group of us have been visiting the SST ever since it started. Over recent years as the founders have moved on, the productions have become increasingly sporadically poor. We had hoped that the new operating and theatre companies would have improved matters. In short we loved 'End of the Line' their first 2019 season production, but thought the prophetically titled ‘A Bunch Of Amateurs' (the second 2019 production) truly abysmal.

We appreciate that the play's gross over acting and crude stereotyping were meant to be ironic, but the overall production was so bad we left at the interval despite having travelled a substantial distance to be there.

The new seating has one good point .. Better sightlines. On the downside rows A&B have legroom suitably only for amputees. Most seriously the restricted flow patterns to sit or exit the theatre in the mid to highseats are frustrating at the least and possibly plain unsafe.

85% of the audiences are of a certain age, many with limited mobility; as we stood waiting (and waiting) to exit the theatre at the interval, we had lots of time to wonder what on earth could happen if there had unfortunately been an emergency evacuation for fire. Really not acceptable in this day and age.

One thing that hasn't changed over the decades is the appalling lack of ventilation and high temperatures afflicting the theatre in summer. The money invested in the new seating racks should instead been invested in either lowcost 'comfort cooling' or in the creation of effective natural ventilation as used in hot countries such as Morrocco .. Or indeed it would help greatly if the top windows and side doors were open well before and during performances to dissipate heat and hunidity . Heat and humidity just keep on building as the evening progresses

More in sorry than in anger even as a very longtime supporter of the theatre I have recommend that it should certainly be avoided in even slightly warm weather even if they've manged to stage a good production .

We saw The End of the Line, a terrific play that couldn’t have been staged in a more appropriate location.
This cute little theatre has a wonderful atmosphere and was just a few hundred yards from where we were staying.

Visited for the first time in a couple of years to see The End of the Line. I thoroughly enjoyed the play and well done to the excellent cast. The experience was spoilt however by the very cramped seating. I am only 5ft 6ins tall but my knees were squashed up against the seat in front and it was impossible to shift position at all. A taller gentleman had to abandon his seat and sit on a chair in the aisle. I think unless the seating changes I won't be visiting again.

We are great fans of Southwold Summer Theatre finding all of their productions highly professional and polished, however, A Daughter's a daughter by Agatha Christie surpassed everything. The cast were truly excellent and gave a remarkable delivery of this not very well known play as the Christie family had withheld copyright fearing some of the characters were too close to home. The season ends next week. Looking forward to next year already.

Went here one evening with my wife to see Funny Money by Ray Cooney. We had booked on line. It is all very quaint. A typical sea side provincial theatre that doubles up as a cinema. The foyer and box office area is very retro 60's - that is good. THe seating is tiers from about row four backwards but a good view is afforded from all seats. The acting was super and the play fast moving and funny - the swapped brief case routines were executed brilliantly and although almost predictable they weren't! A great play, a great cast and a great place to go.

A visit to Southwold in the Summer coincides with the theatre and we were able to get tickets for the Thursday matinee. The play was very enjoyable. Fun actors and the scenery was most impressive. An excellent couple of hours!

Southwold a lovely seaside town to visit at any time of the year and in the summer (July to early September) there is an extra treat. The Southwold Summer Theatre. We have now visited this every year for past 5 years since a friend introduced us to it. And I make sure that we get to go to see at least one of the plays and often 2 or 3. Each season there are a variety of plays performed by 6-8 professional actors in a converted church hall with a proper stage, lighting, sound system, usher, bar and even an ice cream vendor in the interval. Top calibre actors/actresses, well written plays. Very reasonable prices. Give it a try. Recommended.

Wonderful warm local well loved theatre, we visited in August to see Alan Bennetts play The Old Country, excellent rendition and the actors exceptional particularly the lead role. Pre theatre dinner at the Swan to make the night extra special, very enjoyable outing.
