We enjoyed a wonderful 90 minute guided tour from ?Maureen? who was knowledgeable and engaging. We hope to revisit the mansion and study the information boards.

Sunday afternoon is our time to visit a National Trust Property
I decided on Woodchester as the Mansion is owned and preserved by the Woodchester trust and is within the Woodchester Park ran by the National Trust
From the closest car park to the House we made the walk down the driveway this on a hot day was a joyful walk. The house is brilliant where else can you see the Architecture as it was originally conceived and never finished, sad that the Mans vison was never completed but great that its being preserved for us to see.
The cafe is also very good and has a nice variety on offer-the cherry Bakewell tart was easily digested with my Chai Latte
Volunteers gave us details of what to look for, did start to walk down towards the lakes but as it was very warm we took the walk back up the hill.
Will be heading to this park again thats for sure

Well worth a visit. It is unusual to see a building of this era in such a condition. It looks like the work only stopped recently, and not back in 1873. The interior is fascinating, seeing it in its unfinished condition.

We went in through the Tinkley gate entrance to the National Trust property for a Pizza lunch with the grandsons, only to find on arrival that the Pizza oven and kitchen were closed for refurbishment. So had to make do with sandwiches. The site gives lovely walks and views. Lots of children's activities going on. From this entrance its a long walk to the Mansion.

This place is truly amazing.
I feel rather sad at the couple of negative reviews as they obviously didn't do enough research before visiting and the whole point of the building is that it was, sadly, left unfinished due to the death of the owner in 1870.
To see the skill of the craftsmen, carpenters and stonemasons up close is incredible. This is all usually hidden behind plaster and paint. To think of the hard work and tenacity of those involved is humbling.
It is a long walk from the car park but it is down hill and wearing sensible shoes it is like walking in another time. Thankfully they now run a volunteer minibus from the car park for those unable to do the walk. Check the website for days when they don't have volunteers and the bus isn't running.
I was really pleased to see the cafe inside since my last visit. Sadly I have to echo the other review that the service was very slow, we were given wooden cutlery, that is impossible to use for eating a baked potato, when other diners had steel cutlery. We were not offered any water and we missed the start of the tour because it came so late despite telling the lady when we ordered at 2 that we were booked on the 2.30 tour. When our food arrived at 2.25 there was only a few minutes to eat. The food was tasty and good quality which is a bonus and I would eat there again on my next visit.
It is a really good idea to go when one of the free tours is available.
The volunteer guides are a mine of information and bring the place alive.
We will be back.

Having lived in the area for a number of years, this was one of the local almost hidden spots we hadn’t visited. Leaving the car in the car park we walked downhill for almost a mile through beautiful woods to the unusual mock-Gothic unfinished mansion.
The product of one man’s obsession with living a lonesome life amidst splendour and isolation of a 4,000 acre purchase, the mansion was never finished and remains an aberration in the countryside. But it’s definitely worth a visit.
Fascinating architecture remains - don’t expect to see anything inside the house, it’s technically a ruin, but one of the more fascinating aspects is that bats have chosen it for their place of refuge too! Hundreds of them; not that you’ll see them except on live video in the daytime.
The criticism I have for Woodchester is the café or “Servery”. Sadly this is not up to standard. Prices are OK but the quality of the food and the service were not. We waited for over twenty minutes (the place wasn’t busy) and then food was brought out the pasty barely warm, no coleslaw and the cutlery dirty. Not good enough…
But the mansion is very interesting and the volunteers extremely helpful. This is a place with a difference - go and visit!

Although picturesque the car park is a long way from manor. The path to the manor very uneven. Although building historic there is not a lot to see.

Anachronistic attraction.
Why would any sane individual live in a valley that does not see sunshine in winter?
That allied to the fact that any other uninhabited building of a hundred and fifty years would be long broken down for stone .
It is a sad to see workmanship not respected and valued but not everyone has a large competent wealthy family to keep this place going
Why on earth is laurel allowed to grow so invasively?
This place is stuck in some passive aggressive warp ,either rehabilitate the place or knock it down ,it’s only using up money that could be better spent elsewhere e.g Africa

A very interesting review – thank-you.
The descendants of the man for whom the Mansion was built continued to own the estate. They obviously valued the house as they preserved and did not demolish it, though they lacked the means to complete it. Today the continuing respect is attested by the Grade I listing and architectural significance at an international level.
The unique unfinished building offers a different and educational experience and enjoyment to many people, though naturally not everyone is interested.
Incidentally, I can confirm that the sun does shine through the windows in winter!

What a wonderful discovery - beautiful, and so atmospheric! Supposedly extremely haunted but we felt nothing but good vibes here, which is probably down to its idyllic location and its wonderful, extremely knowledgeable and dedicated guides. It's well worth taking the tour because the history of the place is fascinating.
It's a bit of a walk from the nearest car park - but very lovely. It's downhill to get there from the car park and, luckily, they were running a minibus back up the hill when we visited (which was at Halloween.)

Today seemed like a good day to go and visit somewhere I'd been wanting to visit since I moved to Gloucestershire over a year ago. Woodchester Mansion did not disappoint..
Stunning location and amazing to get an idea of how this was constructed (although not finished of course) over 200 years ago..
I walked down the path from the car park, which was lovely, but I was happy that there is a minibus that takes you back at a quarter to the hour.
I wandered round the house first on my own, went into the cellar which was all decorated for Halloween which was popular with the children.
I then joined the tour which went deeper into the history of the house and the building techniques of the era. The bathroom was certainly ahead of its time.
A enjoyable afternoon and would thoroughly recommend, but I understand the mansion will be closing for the winter months soon.
Finally, the volunteers deserve a mention; they were all very inviting and welcoming too.

I have fond memories of visiting here when on a field services week with the Manchester Metropolitan University. 30 years ago but I recall staying in a nearby field services centre. Anyone know what that centre was called? Would like to visit again.

What is the post code for the car park? I ask as it seems a way from the Mansion.
Skrevet 4. juni 2018
The post code to woodchester mansion is GL10 3TS some satnavs don’t like the postcode and can take you down a narrow lane to a private road so the maps on your mobile phone maybe more accurate.
Skrevet 5. juni 2018
No. It's free to walk around but the car park is £3 for the whole day
