Purton Ship Graveyard, located on the banks of the River Severn in Gloucestershire, England, is a unique and fascinating destination for those interested in maritime history and industrial archaeology. The site, which stretches over two miles along the riverbank, is home to over 80 abandoned vessels, which were intentionally beached to protect the riverbank from erosion.
Visitors to Purton Ship Graveyard will be struck by the eerie beauty of the decaying vessels, many of which have been slowly reclaimed by nature. As you wander through the site, you'll see rusted hulls, skeletal frames, and remnants of machinery, all of which serve as a haunting reminder of the ships' former lives and the people who worked on them.
One of the highlights of the site is the S.S. Berkeley, a steamship that was built in 1897 and beached at Purton in 1936. Today, the ship is largely intact and provides a glimpse into the past, with its faded paintwork and rusted metalwork offering a sense of the ship's former glory.
Overall, Purton Ship Graveyard is a fascinating and unique destination that offers visitors a chance to step back in time and explore the history of the River Severn and the ships that once plied its waters. Whether you're interested in maritime history, industrial archaeology, or simply enjoy exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations, Purton Ship Graveyard is well worth a visit.

Great place for a walk with the family and dog. Only 1km from the car park to the graveyard. Interesting info on all the boats, excellent work from the friends of purton. Worth walking to the railway bridge too.

Stayed close by here with our caravan a few days ago. Would not have known it was here had I not done geocaching for a hobby.

An unexpected treasure, lived in Bristol 50 years ago and visited Slimbridge next door several times but never heard or found this. A relative had visited and recommended so walked the path during a recent stay nearby. Stout footwear definitely needed and St John the Evangelist Church, Purton worth a visit too.

Often observed these vessels from the train on the opposite side of the river, and meaning to have a look for many years. Fairly easy to get to and a short walk along the canal from Purton village brings you to this unique site.

Wow! I got so much more than I bargained for with this visit.
The history of the boats, the scenery of the River Severn, and the general landscape of the paths amongst the reeds create a must-visit location in Gloucestershire!
Upon my visit, "Born on the Cut" canal boat cafe was in residence, and I managed to get an ice cream to finish up my walk!

Really lovely, peaceful, scenic walk which has well formed / trodden paths which generally make accessibility good. Plenty to see and bits of information dotted around. Walked down to Sharpness which was a little under 2 miles.
There is a cafe on a long boat but I don't think you could go on it so takeaway only and there's no toilet facilities

It is a little walk. We really enjoyed the canal and the views in the river Severn. The ships were interesting and you have a lot to see and find a lot of information about the history of the ships.

I had high hope for this place but it was even better than I expected!! Parked in the VERY tight car park opposite the church and crossed over the bridge to walk along the canal. Eventually you get to the ships which are amazing! Some have disappeared under the undergrowth but most are visible and you can get right up to them. An excellent sight to see. We went on a very sunny day and all paths were very dry. A must see if you’re in the area or passing close by.

About how far is the walk to the remains of the bridge and back? I am disabled and use a wheeled walker, but can manage a mile or two with it.

The bridge is up past the boats so about a half hour walk straight along the canal path which is gravel and short grass......and also, obviously on the flat..a nice walk

Hi Sarah do you have a satnav/postcode for this please?
Thanks

Hi, don't know who Sarah is, but the ships graveyard doesn't have a postcode as there are no houses there. I think the nearest houses are the canal bank cottages where the postcode is GL13 9HX.
Find Purton on the map (it shows on Google Maps) and the ships graveyard is between Purton & Sharpness of the River Severn side of the Sharpness Canal.
