What a find! An excellent, green, cool oasis in the listed area of Alton. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. The garden is the jewel of this gallery. Entry is free. There is a small cafe but you can also eat and drink in the garden. The garden is well set out and is quiet and promotes reflection. The "physic garden" is well signed posted with lots of explanatory labels. There is also a very comprehensive ceramics collection in the gallery. GO - YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!

This is a lovely museum/gallery with a permanent collection of ceramics from the 13th century to the present day, an exhibition space featuring local artists and photographers, a small in-gallery tea-room, and a beautiful little garden with many unusual plants, where you can sit with your tea on a nice day. There is also a wonderful little gift-shop which features local arts-and-crafts and produce, and which is always a great place to seek out birthday cards and presents for special people.

On my first visit, I went with out-of-town friends who were very 'into' ceramics, and didn't expect to be particularly interested myself, however, I ended up spending a long time in the permanent exhibition, absorbing some very interesting information about the development of pottery techniques over the ages, which appealed to my science and engineering brain. My fiends also bought a picture from the gallery, so I think we were all pretty happy with our visit!

The gallery also hosts a series of varied evening talks through the year, which are well worth attending (pre-booking advised), as well as special events, such as the local archeology event they held this year, and an annual charity fayre.

Note that the exhibition, gallery and shop etc. are all free to visit, which is just amazing, thanks to the Hampshire Cultural Trust, who also support the nearby Curtis Museum, which is also worth a visit (you must see the Saxon "Alton Buckle" if nothing else).

The Allen gallery was hidden under scaffolding when I visited, but still open. It displays a large collection of ceramics, mainly from the 17th century onwards. Of note is the collection of wall tiles, not what I expected to find in a small town museum. Certainly these collections compliment the ceramics galleries at Salisbury museum. The temporary exhibition currently shows local photographs.

A quiet serene space allows you to wander and enjoy the hugely varied pieces on display
If that's not enough there is one of the nation's best ceramic collection and a delightful little refreshment station..,all for nothing !!!

Curated by a team with imagination, Woolies china lurks a few feet from Bronze age earthenware. Stacks of shallow drawers contain intriguing collections of small treasures. Kids enjoyed but rather whizzed through, the collection warranted a more leisurely solo return visit. Beautiful tiled panels encourage one to linger in the small rooms leading off one another, some original fittings to the buildings have been retained. Exhibition space has more modern vibe, eclectic mix of shows but can be a bit patchy. Unless the weather is grim dont bother with the slightly uninspiring cafe with a DIY beverage machine - take the not bad cake and brew into the gem of a small beautifully planted garden and enjoy the dappled shade, bird song, scents and peace of this sanctury.

This quaint Allen gallery has one of the most outstanding collections of ceramics and tiles. Guide available for small donation well worth it.( pre booked ).

This was originally a stable and coachman's house being left by final owner William Hugh Curtis left in his will as public museum.
Now busting at seams is to be upgraded and improved
