What a great day - a Blacksmith Experience at the Medieval Centre! It was run by Steve, who got me involved straight away. The full day experience was 10am-4pm. He has so much knowledge to share and was a fantastic person to get you hands on with some skills of blacksmithing. He was really patient and gave step by step instruction even for someone like me with no prior experience. As shown in the photo I was able to forge a few bits and take them home too. Currently open Thursday-Sunday if you're anywhere near Sandwich go and have a look!

We went on a whim and loved the visit! The staff were so friendly and informative and there was a huge amount of different areas of medieval lofe to explore, from board games to blacksmithing!
The visit was also interactive and the staff were more than happy to let us pick up and examine some of the items. I could have spent hours but had to get back for lunch!

The person (Dave I think?) we met at the centre was very kind. We turned up on a weekday during Heritage week, thinking that activities were running on weekdays as well ( we should have gone on the weekend to see all the other activities unfortunately).
We were a little disappointed to have missed it. He went out of his way to find a craft activity for my 11 year old son, play a medieval game of tic tac toe and talked us through medieval swords, arrows and coins and let us have a peek inside the boat.
We are hoping to book a group visit with some other friends - mead making, blacksmithing or illuminated letters.
Thank you

What an experience. The medieval center is a lovely place on its own to visit but they also offer experiences too. I was lucky enough to be given a day's experience blacksmithing for my birthday at Sandwich Medieval Centre and had previously been to look around.
The session I was given was a full day starting at 10 am and running until 4 pm. All the staff were extremely welcoming and made me feel so comfortable and the session was run by Steve. The blacksmithing forge was traditional with its bellows and fuel and you get a very traditional experience working with all the hand tools. What is there to say about Steve... he's brilliant: so informative and knowledgeable. He spoke through all the steps and explained processes well. Now, blacksmithing is quite physical but Steve offers to take over when you might need a break and obviously models certain steps but you can do as much as you want. I came out with the pieces that I had made but most importantly a great smile on my face.
I would say that this experience is well worth the money and I would recommend it to anyone. I certainly would like to do it again.

Dropped in here just as we had parked and were off on a wander. They guy we spoke to was so interesting, knowledgeable and lovely. Our daughter who is twelve thought it was great. Some excellent work being done too. Recommend you drop in and ask questions and perhaps leave a donation as we did. Wonderful

Free entry 10-4 tho not open every day, we came upon this by accident.
The staff in the centre are actively engaged in the restoration project of a medieval boat and are keen to talk about it and show their skills - very interesting
Free entry with a suggested donation of £2 per person - very fair.
A good way to pass 30mins, please support this endeavour

Just stopped by today with my Daughter and Grandson. We all thought it was great. There were 3 friendly people all of whom had great knowledge of their "hobby" (looked/sounded like professionals), including a medieval woman, a blacksmith at work, and a boat builder - all done as the medieval folk would have done - and dressed in the clothing of the time. Very knowledgeable, very happy to inform/discuss - and very interesting. And it was free!! If you're interested in this period of history, go along.

We stumbled across this by chance after leaving our bikes locked up nearby. The blacksmith was teaching a couple of lads how to make knives in the forge. We ended up spending at least 30 mins there chatting and looking at the exhibits. Very helpful and committed volunteers
