Morning. Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback. Could I just confirm that there is plenty of information regarding the history of the site via information boards at various locations around the site. There are also audio guides and the staff are very knowledgeable and able to answer any of your questions. In regards to your point about the admission fee: Ashby de la Zouch castle is part of English Heritage Trust, a charity that maintains and promotes some of Englands greatest historical sites. Ultimately, this is what you are supporting by paying the admission fee. Kind Regards.

The castle was owned by the Hastings family. Mary Queen of Scots was held here briefly after being arrested. It was a huge castle, but demolished during the civil war. The remains of the Hastings Tower were very impressive, and you can climb to the top. The remains of a very large church are not to be missed.

Another visit to Ashby Castle as due to lockdown restrictions further lifted a trip up the tower is now possible and it offers a fantastic view of the area around the castle, well worth a visit.

Had a nice few hours looking round the castle ruins. Lovely views from the top of the tower. Interesting history. Don’t miss the tunnel

Fantastic castle to look around. Front line staff were very knowledgeable on the castle. Would loved to have seen the castle in its former glory. Unfortunately history intervened. English Heritage have done a lot to encourage visitors with games that can be used by visitors. Great for a picnic on a nice day.
Selling point for me was the castle itself and the sheer history behind it. Go see it.

I don't often visit ruins. I love seeing inside old houses and castles, but I like to be able to see them pretty much intact.
However, this is on our doorstep, we've never been, and I had a half price voucher. So we booked a visit and packed up a picnic. I was pleasantly surprised as there are more of the ruins left than you'd imagine from outside the site. There is a tower with 98 steps to the top, which offers magnificent views of the castle grounds and the surrounding area. There's also a tunnel you can enter which runs underneath the castle.
It kept my children entertained for an hour or so over the summer holidays, but to be honest, I think I would have found it a bit pricey for what it is at full price.

Superb place to visit especially with kids! A fantastic example of a British castle, and just a shame it was never finished. However what is left will have you in awe of the views you can get, and what it was like in its hay day! Spend a good amount of time walking around the grounds and you won't be disappointed. The kids will love playing hide and seek here too!

A fine old castle ruin. Sadly, it rained while we were there and I would definitely recommend going on a drier day as there is little shelter from the elements! The trouble with pre-booking (essential due to Covid) is you can't guarantee the weather :(

Had an English Heritage shop and clean toilets onsite.
No parking except for blue-badge holders.

We really enjoyed our visit here, lovely staff member welcomed us. Not that expensive, nice little shop, clean shared tiolet. Quite a nice size castle, can have audio, easy to do.
5 minute walk to town centre with a museum but closed at 2 so never got in. Lots of grass to sit and have a picnic or sit on the bench under the tree or choice of two patio benches. As hot and cold drinks & ice creams.

My partner and I visited Ashby Castle during COVID 19 restrictions, therefore we had to book our tickets online in advance. Our tickets cost £7.60 each, certainly worth it. Upon arrival we parked in the nearby pay and display car park as there was a sign informing us that there is no parking except for Blue Badge holders at the site itself. It was only a very short walk past the neighbouring tennis club from where we had parked to the castle itself.

We waited outside and were quickly and warmly greeted by a lovely lady who confirmed our booking and told us about the English Heritage Membership. Masks are required when walking through the gift shop for entry and exit but when you are out of there it is up to you if you wear a mask.

There are information boards around the site telling you the history of the different rooms and towers which are very interesting to read, an audio tour is available. There are signs that tell you to keep 2m apart from others when looking around the different rooms and you can access the underground tunnel but you must ensure it is empty before attempting to descend into it as it’s quite narrow and obviously because of COVID restrictions. There is a toilet on site next to the gift shop if needed.

My partner and I thorough enjoyed our day out looking around this amazing site, we snapped some lovely pictures. I definitely recommend visiting. 10/10!
