We visited Alford Manor whilst holidaying in Sutton-on-Sea. It's a quirky old building that was, thankfully, saved from collapse. We got a friendly welcome from the chap at the front desk. The history of the house is fascinating, and more should be made of this. I was hoping to buy a guide book that I could read after our visit, but there were none. It's a shame modern requirements blight most of the rooms....exit signs, modern lighting etc. It would have been nice to see ALL the rooms made up and set out as they would have been used, but one was made up to look like a schoolroom, one was storage for modern stuff etc. Also, a lot of the pictures in cabinets, cases and on the walls, gave no clue as to who the people or places were - it would have been interesting to know if they were family and staff from the manor. We would have LOVED to see before and after pics/info on the restoration work that had to be done. The garden needed a little tidying, and it was a crying shame to see the abundance of fruit, herbs and veg go to waste - could they not be harvested and sold to the public, or used in the cafe? All in all, we enjoyed our visit, the house had a warm welcoming feel, the volunteers were friendly, and it was worth the £6.50 entrance fee. We also paid another £2 each to visit the museum of rural life - basically a big barn rammed with interesting things. Well worth a visit if in the area.

We travelled from Woodhall to Alford specially to visit this house on Tuesday afternoon June 11th but when we got there we were told we couldn't see round as there were no volunteer guides, which was very disappointing. So please check that it's open before you go there!

We paid to view the house and we felt rather let down. The owners/organisers are missing a trick or two. Many rooms were filled with descriptions/signs and little else. The restoration of the building was interesting but repeated information throughout rather than perhaps the history of the families who had lived here etc.
There was a modern bar in the ‘kitchen’ and the only evidence of it having been a kitchen was the nice open fire with 3 chimneys which were interesting to be able to look up (put lights there and even better)
We did expect rooms set up as they may have been in the past but only a couple were. Clutter around and modern chairs stored which are obviously for functions held here.
I was itching to reorganise and make it a better visitor experience.

Visited on May 8th 2.50 pm - the sign on the door said OPEN- this generally means open in my experience.
Entered past a group of three at the visitors desk and explained we were going to the tea room first- others were in drinking. On meeting the member of staff at the tea room and ordering two drinks- told ‘We close at three today we are not serving.’

This on a day celebrating Volunteers!

31 members of Meols u3a visited during a week's holiday in the area. We discovered this gem online, along with information about the market and market auction. Although the market and auction were a little oversold, the Manor House wasn't.

Our travel agent booked the visit for us and arranged a soup and roll offered by the volunteers who run this attraction. The soup was made in-house and was delicious. Before lunch, John, a volunteer, gave a talk on the history of the Manor House. His wife Margaret greeted us on our arrival and ensured that we had a smooth departure, having remained throughout our visit.

The visit was enhanced by the glorious weather, but it is truly a gem.

Alford Manor House is believed to be the largest thatched manor house in England and is part public, part paid for museum. The roof is certainly thatched. Unfortunately, the museum reception couldn't accept a credit card for the entrance fee so all I could do was wander the lower ground area.

I took a group of 17 adults to picnic and to have an introductory talk about the manor house. The staff very kindly allowed us to picnic in their wedding marquee because it was raining. We had a superb introductory talk and a very interesting look around the house and the heritage centre. Helpful and knowledgeable staff who made our visit special. We will return!.

This is at the heart of Alford.
We only visited to support by using the tea room.
Volunteers were talkative and friendly- makes you want to return.
Most attractive house and setting with car park.
The lemon cake was first class.

This is a beautiful old Manor House and a gift in the life of Lincolnshire history now that it is restored to its current condition. The garden is lovely and the wash house furnished with great historical laundry tools.
We visited today and although we appreciate all that has been done we felt that the interior was too cluttered with an excess of items that we thought had probably been donated to the Manor , interesting in themselves but not of particular relevance to the house itself...… sometimes less is more and perhaps some of the furnishings could be thinned out so as to not mask the real value of the building?
We saw some beautiful Lincolnshire crafted chairs that may look amazing in the reception area ??
We would love to see the servants bedchamber set up as was , as with the other bedchambers and the archive ….oh dear , it looks like help is needed !!!
The Museum was closed and we did not use the tea room but feed back for these is positive and we shall visit again and support a house that needs preserving.
Please take this review as positive not in the least critical.
