Fascinating visit to Gayle Mill as part of the Heritage Open Days.
Guided tour from very personable & knowledgeable gentleman ( who never told us his name!)
This is a gem of a place & needs to be better advertised!
The history & constant change of use is amazing & it's inappropriate beautiful part of the world!

Having recently attended a full day wheelwrighting workshop, I cannot recommend a course run by The Gayle Mill Trust highly enough. The course was run by William and a small team of volunteers who are highly knowledgeable and equally passionate about traditional craftsmanship.

Over the course of the day we were introduced to the fascinating art of wheelwrighting - making a traditional steel-hooped cartwheel. In a small group of four (maximum six) we used a wide variety of traditional tools to manufacture the hub, spokes and felly (rim) of the wheel. Having no previous experience of using such tools was no impediment thanks to the advice and guidance of William and the team throughout the day.

There is a constant stream of tea/coffee and snacks, as well as a delicious lunch to ensure there are no distractions from the task at hand.

The assembly of the wheel, without any glue, is an exacting craft. It is a fascinating process which concludes with the addition of the steel-hooped rim in a spectacular manner. This involves placing the rim into a fierce fire to allow it to expand, before fitting it around the felly and then quenching it with water. Once the steam clears the rim has shrunk around the wheel, pulling it together under immense pressure.

A fitting finale to a wonderful day.

Always wanted to visit the mill ever since seeing it on The Restoration Programme. The tour surpassed all expectations. The enthusiastic and knowledgable volunteers made it so interesting. Their hard work and dedication is amazing. Let us the problems they are encountering with the owners can be solved and the mill remains open. Many thanks to you all for such an enjoyable couple of hours.

I was vary lucky to have been booked on to a "Hands on Woodworking Day" by my husband for a recent birthday.
It's an all day course including materials, lunch and it's was worth every penny!
I enjoyed every minute and never stopped smiling throughout the day. I also came away with a beautiful table, all made by me!
From the moment I arrived the volunteers made me feel so welcome and at ease. I was the only woman out of the four of us booked on the course but felt very comfortable from the start. The tuition is so well explained by William and his team of volunteers that even though I was using tools I'd never used before I felt confident throughout. Most of the machines are run by water power which is amazing to see. A special big thanks to Tony who gave me lots of one to one advice very patiently and easily understood.
The food and snacks provided throughout the day was lovely, though I just couldn't wait to get back to the woodwork!
I honestly could rave on and on about how fantastic the day was, as I have to anybody and everybody who would listen to me! But if you have the opportunity to get yourself on any course they run don't hesitate because they sell out quick and you'll love it!

Gayle Mill was built as a water wheel powered spinning mill but isnow a retsored and working sawmill and Carpentry / joinery workshop, now powered powered by electricity generated by a turbine driven by water from the adjoining stream. On the first Sunday of each month (except January) the machinery is operated for the morning and afternoon tour.

The tour presenters really know the mill inside out, having been engaged in the restoration of the woodworking machinery and its current use in the production of wooden products : gates, fences wheels etc.All in all I found the tour absolutely facinating, well worth the fee which goes to support the activities of the Trust which operates the Mill and runs the specialised training courses (eg Wheelwrighting).

Even if you can't manage to be in Gayle on the first Sunday of the month the Mill is still well worth visiting for the tour.

Thank you Tony for your review of Gayle Mill. I will share your comments with all the tours guides who were present on Demonstration Day last Sunday. They are a very dedicated group of volunteers and Gayle Mill is the richer for having these fantastic people involved. Thank you for visiting and come and visit again soon!

We arrived in the morning to look around as the weather wasn't very good, to be told that you couldn't look around unaccompanied and that there was a tour that afternoon. Whilst it was tempting to sit in front of a warm fire and not return in the afternoon as it was very wet / windy, I'm glad we did . My husband loves saw mills / old machinery etc. however, I did wonder whether I'd enjoy it as much; I needn't have worried. Brian, our tour guide, was brilliant - he was really informative and had a way to make it all very interesting - and very quickly you could see why you needed to be accompanied as there were some pretty sharp blades around. I'd definitely recommend visiting although its probably best to check times as I'm not sure if they are open much after October.

You can only go around this mill on a guided tour. Times advertised on line and on a board at the end of the lane. Your guide is one of the supporting volunteers and very interesting the tour is, we had a lovely group who all happy interacted together. Worth a stop and look. Thanks.

Visited today for the 1:00 pm guided tour. We were greeted by Pam in reception who welcomed us to the mill and guided us upstairs for tea or coffe before the tour commenced. Our tour guide Brian was a terrific presenter and his knowledge of the mill and the local history was exceptional. The staff were fantastic and made us all feel very welcome. A very informative and interesting visit that turned out to be much better than expected.

We turned up at about 10.00 on sunday just wanting a look round. We were told that unaccompanied tours were not allowed so we decided to wait until 11.00 and take the tour which was scheduled for 2 hours. I love old machine tools but was a little worried my wife may not enjoy the tour. I need not have worried she loved it finding it very interesting. It tour is informative and the guys knowledge ow the mill, its history and the machines is great. Being a health and safety manager i can understand why there isnt any unacompanied tours allowed. Expensive at £12 a ticket - i dont think so - it was well worth it and the money goes to the rental and upkeep of the mill. Dont forget to gift aid where you can !!
