Well preserved monuments inside Geddington Church, illustrating the history of the Montague Family - better with someone "in the know"

The quixotic location of these beautiful monuments only adds to their attraction. Tucked away in a tiny village church, they take your breath away. They are a wonderful “story book” of the Montagu family once one of the most important and powerful in the land. The restoration of these stunning works has made them pristine so that the beauty of the work can be fully appreciated. Add to this that it’s free to go in and a friendly knowledgeable guide is around on open days, you have a great excursion. Check opening times

Hidden away in many English village churches are pieces of artwork more usually seen in great cathedrals or museums. Here in the depths of the Northamptonshire countryside there is not just one but four.

They are monuments to the life and death of four generations of the Montague family who own the adjacent Boughton House, also worth a visit. Carved from white marble, housed in a purpose built chancel and lit by a huge East window the effect is stunning and totally out of keeping with the rest of the church which is fairly plain. They have recently been restored after years of neglect and layers of dirt from the church old heating system have been carefully removed.

The most arresting one is the earliest one commissioned in 1749 although on a sunny day the later monument inspired by Adam is a knockout, full of sublime movement and delicate carving, the angel's wings almost translucent to light when the sun shines through them.

The guides were knowledgeable and enthusiastic and since we were the only visitors we had their undivided attention.

A mile or so away is Weekley church which contains monuments to an earlier generation of Montagues, reflecting different tastes and attitudes to death but worthy in their own way.

Both churches are only open on certain days so check first on the website. Why jostle for position in Westminster Abbey or St Paul's when you can have all this for free and in such sublime settings? On the other hand maybe best to keep these secret places to ourselves.

In the village church of the picturesque Warkton village are these beautiful monuments to the Montagu family of nearby Boughton house.
Dedicated local guide Trish explained the history behind these monuments.
These sculptures are a hidden gem of art and history just outside the market town of Kettering, a must see if you live in or are visiting the area.

When I first saw these they took my breath away. Later when I learned about each one, I became more and more entranced by them. They are extremely beautiful, and unlike some in Westminster Abbey, the restoration has returned them to pristine condition. I could look at them for hours, and mull over the story that attaches to each one. They are open to the public for a limited time. Don't miss this wonderful treasure.

These wonderful sculptures are inside Warkton church which, unfortunately, is kept locked for most of the time. A notice in the porch does give dates when the church is open but none of these were convenient for me. However, I was able to see most of the sculptures through the church's large east window and even this glimpse was sufficient to convince of their beauty. I will certainly do my best to visit this church again when it is open.

These are amaazing sculptures, especially if you look at the details - fingers, toes, feathers, the drape of the clothes on the angle just landed - and to think they have been carved out of blocks of marble.

It's free and easy to visit in August 2016 and on Heritage Open Days in Sept but after that you'll need to check on the website when its open. I understand that there are always guides present - Trisha was very knowledgable and picthed it just right , telling us the story of each of the 4 Montagues as well as giving us information on the sculptures, their original sculptors and the recent restoration. I'd give it 11/10 at least

I visited with Mum who has mobility problems and can report it was a level walk in to the church, then just 2 steps (with sturdy fixed handrail) up to the chancel where the monuments are. Plenty of chairs there and no problem moving them to sit in front of each monument in turn for as long as we wished.
