Borde Hill Gardens. We had been there before, but not for many years. It's a very nice approachable garden set in 200 acres of estate grounds, with fine vistas across the surrounding Sussex countryside. Many fine plants including some exotic plants brought back from overseas in the 19th century. A guide map illustrates a route round the gardens which provides relatively easy access for disabled people (with wheelchairs etc). You might have to miss out some parts which require going up steep steps. These can be quite tricky - not enough grab railings for the frail. But all in all a delightful garden with many lovely bits hidden away in nooks and crannies. Lots of benches and open spaces with picnic tables, and a children's play area. Well worth the visit.

I decided to take my elderly wheelchair bound mother to these gardens which are close to the rest home she has recently moved into. I checked out on their website that the gardens were wheelchair accessible first. To be clear, i am a physio of many years standing so am very comfortable handling people with disabilities who are wheelchair bound. I am also physically very fit. The description states "Gentle slopes with hard surfaces allow wheelchair access". I challenge anyone of average fitness to push someone in a wheelchair up some of these slopes. Coming down these slopes was a bit scary for poor old ma!Additionally the hard surfaces were often uneven, of a difficult camber, of gravel type material, or even occasionally of unlevel crazy paving surfaces. Given this i would say that, of " the majority of the formal Garden accessible to those with restricted mobility" , actually about 20% would be more a accurate description for someone in a wheelchair and for those who walk with impaired mobility care would be required. All of this would be acceptable if we had been cautioned before we entered the gardens or if there was a reduced (?waived) fee for someone with a disability who can actually access very little of the gardens easily. Rather we paid a rather costly 20GBP for entry (or as i prefer to think of it...i paid a tenner for a very good workout!). I note another reviewer has mentioned this issue previously so attention to this would be good. The gardens, however, are simply beautiful and well worth a visit if you are able bodied.

I went early and only stayed an hour due to the ongoing Easter Egg hunt so it was not very peaceful. It is a lovely garden but it is a bit of an in-between time at the moment as lots of the planting was almost over and the rest is still to come out. The planting around the pool was lovely. I will go back at another time. Good parking and friendly staff. Able to book with my Historic Houses card online.

We have just moved to Balcombe. We’ve joined Borde Hill as we had our wedding reception here in 1983! The gardens are lovely. We walked all the way round the woodland walk through Stephanie’s Glade and also round the formal gardens, which have some lovely spring flowers. As a rose lover I can’t wait to see the rose garden in bloom. Next time we will do the lake walk. So nice to have this on our doorstep.

We went to the Christmas Event on 11.12. A family member is in a wheelchair and hasn’t been out much so thought this would be a lovely day out. Well, I’ll start with the only good point. We got a disabled parking space!
THIS PLACE IS NOT WHEELCHAIR FRIENDLY. What an absolute nightmare. The paths were accessible, bumpy, but with two of us pushing it was bearable. Couldn’t access some of the stalls due to the terrain. We went into Elviras for lunch, after waiting half and hour to order, I had to chase (they were not particularly busy). Eventually we ordered and then they forgot one of the lunches! The waiter was also hinting about a tip! Unbelievable. We then went into the marquee part to more stalls. There was no ramp to get the wheelchair up. So had to struggle with 3 of these thresholds. No room to push a wheelchair. I am absolutely fuming that the stalls were not accessible for a wheelchair. We decided to leave as our family member in the wheelchair just felt a burden. Disgraceful. It obviously doesn’t bother Borde Hill Gardens at all. I would have given it 0 stars but as we got a parking space, I gave it 1.

Hi Sue, thank you for your feedback and I am sorry to read of your family’s experience at the Borde Hill Christmas Market. The Market was a collaboration between four businesses, Borde Hill Garden, Jeremy’s, Café Elvira, and The Green Tree Gallery. I can offer my assurance that the Marquee located within the Garden is fully accessible via a ramp, so am I correct in thinking the areas you refer to are located inside Jeremy’s? We will of course share this feedback with our partners and make any changes as appropriate. In terms of Borde Hill Garden, the majority of the formal areas are accessible to those with restricted mobility, with gentle slopes with hard surfaces to allow wheelchair access. A mobility map is available for those who may be disabled, have child buggies or other mobility needs. Wheelchairs are also available for use and can be pre-booked in advance of your visit, with disabled car parking situated in front of the Garden entrance. Once again I would like to apologise to you and your family and do hope that this experience does not deter you from visiting the tranquillity of the Garden in the future. If you would like to discuss the matter in more detail, please contact us at: info@bordehill.co.uk

We are regular visitors to the gardens, always early in the morning when you can get in an hours relaxing walk. On a sunny day, sitting by the pond listening to the birds just cannot be beaten before heading off on whichever circuit you wish, stopping off at the Gardeners retreat to collect a coffee and a piece of cake. That said, I do think the fountain/sculpture in the Italian pond has gone well past its sell by date and spoils a tranquil rest. Finish off with a peaceful fifteen minutes overlooking the fields and viaduct watching the buzzards and kites soaring in the thermals; a perfect way to kick start your day.

The gardens are a warren of "secret" pathways and hidden ruins containing interesting pieces of sculpture.
Our dog enjoyed a long walk round the lakes (on a lead) and there were benches and picnic tables galore.
Not the best time of year for colour but the rose garden was still a picture.
I loved it.
I could sit for hours in the Italian garden.
Nice that the house is still lived in by the family.

Lovely Garden - lots of different bits to discover.
Large enough to mean no crowds but small enough to mean easy to get round
Sculptures added bonus

Lovely gardens! We were given a gift voucher to visit and came in yesterday (10/07/21). Have to admit, we did not know this place existed..
Really enjoyed our time exploring the gardens - beautiful array of roses, loved the Round Dell and Old Potting Sheds areas, spectacular colours all over; some amazing sculptures on display too.
Our only comment is that the one-way system is a bit confusing and does not make sense.
This place is definitely worth a visit and it is only £9.00 (£9.95 with Gift Aid) for an adult ticket.

I liked that the grounds are so well laid out for different abilities, being a slow 40 minute walk around the main gardens, another 30 mins or so through the woodland or even longer to traverse to the lakes down the hill. There was so much to see and enjoy - vibrant colour, fragrant flowers, beautiful plants, trees and sculptures, views across the countryside, topped off with a welcoming cafe and shop, all socially distanced and Covid compliant. Around the site there are plenty of benches to sit, relax and take in the sights, sounds and scenery. The weather certainly helped make the day special but I have to compliment those who make Borde Hill Gardens what it is and what a delightful day out this venue has to offer.

Do we have to book on a Sunday or can just turn up. Can we bring a picnic?

Borde Hill Garden is open daily but requires visitors to use the website to pre-book tickets. There are 30 minute entry slots each day with a specific number of tickets available.
You can bring a picnic, or you can buy take-away food on site.
See website home page for links to book a ticket, and
and under Things-to-do for eating and picnics.

Actually you could probably cover most of the grounds, however it would be a good idea to contact them before setting out just to see what facility's they have for you.
Is it free to get in

Normally it is paid entry but there are ways to get in free at certain times of the year. Our website has full details, but for example as a RHS individual member visiting us in June and September 2021 (excludes special events).

Hi, I would love to bring my elderly mother to the gardens, she has limited walking ability. Would it be possible to hire or borrow a wheelchair and what is the accessibility like. I had a bit of trouble pushing at Claremont due to gravel paths and slopes and several paths were not recommended at all.
We are both very keen gardeners and would love to visit this coming Sunday, maybe with a picnic.

Yes a wheelchair can be borrowed but it is best to ring or email beforehand so as to reserve one so it is available on the day.

Simplest way is to go along the A264 East and join the M23 at Pease Pottage (Southbound towards Brighton) then after it becomes the A23 take the exit Left onto the B2115 towards Cuckfield and follow the brown tourist board signs for Borde Hill Garden.
About a 30 minute journey.

No, absolutely not. It's a private concern and all the better for it. Do go; you won't be disappointed!
