Wonderful house and gardens
sep. 2021 • Familie
One of the better National Trust sites and thankfully has not yet been destroyed by the woke infested NT “leadership”.

The gardens and deer park were gorgeous (bring wellies) and even the dog loved it!

The house itself was stunning and the art on display was remarkable.

Much improved since our last visit when the house was shuttered.

A little disappointed this time
nov. 2021 • Alene
I've visited Petworth House several times before but was a little disappointed this time. Firstly I was quite heavily pushed to become a National Trust member and to gift aid my entrance fee, neither of which I wanted to do. Then I found that there were no longer any descriptions on the artworks and the guide had limited knowledge, just thumbed through a guide book. And finally there was no longer access to the grand staircase which I particularly wanted to see. The grounds were glorious in their autumn colours though and may have been the highlight of my visit.

Hello. We are sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your visit and experience upon arrival. Although buying a membership or purchasing a gift aid ticket may be actively encouraged, as these options provide the charity with vital funds such as for conversation work, these schemes are not promoted unnecessarily – we apologise if you thought this was the case. Unfortunately, we aren’t able to share information in the same ways we were before the pandemic, which means we are not able to have our room information folders out currently. However, we have introduced a free downloadable house tour, which shares highlights from the collection, and there are free highlight leaflets that visitors can pick up when entering the house and keep. There are also Room Guides throughout the house who are happy to answer any questions. During the winter certain rooms are closed to allow the team to carry out essential cleaning and care of the collections, which is important for their future preservation. All information regarding the rooms open at different times can be found on our website. We are delighted to hear you enjoyed the autumn colour here, and hope you will visit again in the future.

Great for a dog walk, interesting house interior
apr. 2021
The park, with its free roaming deer and extensive paths, provide great walking opportunities (with or without a dog!).
The house is worth a visit with a set of small Turner paintings in their intended original location.

Sunny Visit
sep. 2021
We spend a lovely couple of hours here as a break in the journey to Salisbury from East Kent. We had a sunny day in late September and the grounds were still looking beautiful. Bit miffed about having to pay parking on top of the full fee for the house and grounds but it wasn't a deal breaker.
The art works in the house are fantastic BUT I would say we struggled to see a few due to the height they were hung and more specifically because there was no angle to avoid the light reflecting on them. We also found a lack of info about the art a bit disappointing but appreciate a lot of covid adaptations have been made and so leaflets and information folders have been removed. Still it's the closest Ive ever been to some stunning William Blake pieces.
We enjoyed the deer park and had a picnic near the rotunda. Big Tip - Don't follow Google Maps Sat Nav, you'll end up out of Petworth and looking at the deer park gates (which you cant get in through) The entrance is the other side of the estate!

Pleasant visit
okt. 2021 • Par
We have visited many NT places over the years and can say was not disappointed with the visit. Whilst the exterior of the house may not have the same opulence of other houses inside it is amazing. Full of fabulous art work and sculptures. All the paintings tell you who painted them and if you look closely on some it does tell you who the person in the painting is. We didn't have time to walk around the grounds but did find the kitchens and house a good visit.

Lack of information re fine works of art spoilt the visit
okt. 2021
Petworth is a treasure trove of beautiful art works - as well as being a fine house with a beautiful park. However, virtually all information relating to the individual rooms and works of art has been removed so one has to pass by numerous paintings without knowing who the sitters are, who they were painted by or their provenance. This is hugely unsatisfactory and couldn't happen in any art gallery. At the time of our visit there were few volunteers to ask - an exception being one (happily unmasked!) younger chap who was particularly knowledgeable about Grinling Gibbons' wood carvings. The NT should remember that it is a temporary custodian of the country's treasures and as such should ensure that the visiting public (who pays) has as much access and information as possible.

Hello, we are glad to hear your enjoyed your visit to Petworth. Unfortunately, we aren’t able to share information in the same ways we were before the pandemic as the safety of our visitors, staff and volunteers is our priority, which means we are not able to have our room information folders out currently. However, we have introduced a free downloadable house tour, which shares highlights from the collection, and there are free highlight leaflets that visitors can pick up when entering the house and keep. In each room there is also an introductory panel giving an overview of that space and there are Room Guides throughout the house who are able to share information on the collection. Our Petworth House guide book is also available to purchase from the shop which lists the collection room by room. The team work hard to preserve the collection here and we hope you enjoyed seeing it.

Kitchens saved the day!
okt. 2021
It was a beautiful day to visit, weather wise, so walking around the park was very pleasant.

The staff were very friendly and informative.

The paintings on display were wonderful to see but... I suppose we hadn't realized that is was not as opulent as the other National Trust houses we've visited... rather bland in exterior design too... it lacked, for us, the 'wow' factor you usually feel when seeing other more extensive and furniture filled houses.

We really enjoyed the kitchens ... they were super to see and beautifully presented.

We had a reasonably priced coffee in the light airy cafe... nice distances still between tables.

Bought several things in the shop.

We did enjoy sitting in the sunshine having our picnic!

Hello we are delighted to hear your enjoyed visiting Petworth, although disappointed you didn't think we had the 'wow' factor! Inspired by Baroque palaces of Europe Petworth is set amidst a 700 acre estate designed by Lancelot 'Capability' Brow, and displays one of the finest art collections in the care of the National Trust. This includes paintings by Turner, Gainsborough, Reynolds and Van Dyck; sculptures by Flaxman and Westmacott, and even gems like the first English terrestrial globe made in 1592 by the mathematician Emery Molyneux! That sounds pretty cool to us. We hope you'll visit again in the future and enjoy another sun-filled day here with us.

A good day out….
okt. 2021
There’s plenty to do here and no need to book… We took approx’ 4 hours to do the grounds, the servants quarters and the main house when a spot of lunch then preceded the walk into the outer grounds in search of the deer - and we weren’t disappointed.

The house itself is a little treasure trove of history, of art and sculptures and plenty of guides on hand to answer questions (even the silliest of them).

Overall a good day out for us!

Beautiful artworks
aug. 2021 • Par
Worth the visit just to see all the paintings and sculptures. An interesting variety of artists on display. The house is interesting but it's the artwork that makes it stand out. Cafe is a bit meh but not a huge problem.

Very expensive for an art gallery
sep. 2021
We visited with family (4 adults) who had great memories from years ago of the house and grounds. We were all shocked at the reception we received at the front desk, welcoming it was not. Having committed to visiting we paid the entrance fee. There is very little to read or understand about what it might have been to have lived here. There is the kitchens and the lower ground of the main house. There was some beautiful art and sculptures, but to be honest I wanted to know more about the life of the house. I honestly felt the kitchens and rooms needed some TLC. This was the first National Trust property I have visited and was surprised how run down and grim it was. I am not encouraged to pay money to visit other properties.

Hello, we are sorry to hear you did not enjoy your visit to Petworth, and will pass on your comments about the welcome you received. There are also Room Guides throughout the house who are happy to answer any questions about site or family history. We are saddened to hear you were not impressed with the presentation of the house, but the rooms are historically laid out to display the artwork, with the Red Room for example restored in 2002 to reinstate the scheme devised by the 3rd Earl in 1806, where the pictures were re-hung according to a watercolour by Turner. All National Trust properties are different so there might be another you would enjoy visiting.
