It's a lovely area, a lovely village, with fresh nature. Walk around with your dog and family, stop to take pictures, beautiful and there is a shop next door. We stopped for a drink.

Set off for a long walk round the lovely park - starting from North Gate. A large pit bull type dog was marauding around the car park and the owner clearly had zero intention of controlling it as it set off into the park. The numerous deer would therefore clearly have been at risk. It's a v.popular dog walking area but for the sake of wildlife - as well as non dog loving humans - tighter controls on dogs would be appreciated

Firstly, we have been visiting Petworth Park for 30+ years as the walk is thoroughly enjoyable. Unfortunately today (and now on a regular basis) it is impossible to find a seat in the cafe. It appears the NT are missing out here, fortunately for us Ramster Gardens along the road provide lunches and seating.

Have been a number of times before but still enjoy going around the house, enjoying the art and architecture. You always learn something new and on this occasion we learned a great deal from an extremely proficient room guide, who, luckily for us, seemed to move to a different position in the gallery as we did. Extraordinary amount you can miss unless you listen to the guides and have the help of their torches to illuminate details in some of the darker paintings. Many of Turner's paintings are here as he was residential for part of his life.

The grand rooms display the important art collection to varying effect. In the very traditional North Gallery it's difficult to see many of the pictures, lighting is poor. The room with the Henry VIII portrait and famous Turner Landscapes was the most impressive, with extraordinary Grindling Gibbons carvings. Worth the visit just to see that room.
The kitchens are massive and very interesting, I was especially impressed by the massive Victorian boiler which was taller than me.
Great views from the interior, we didn't walk in the park due to elderly hips! Half the outside is covered in scaffold so not as appealing gas it could be. Cafe a bit gloomy because you can't see out. We tool our coffee onto the terrace.

Unbelievably vast art collection set in a magnificent estate.
Highlights include works from many Turner , Lely, Gainsborough, Reynolds.
The House, Servants Quarters , Artworks, and Grounds are all worth visiting in their own rights.
Allow lots of time for a visit.
We are in the Cafe , food was great and reasonably priced.
There is a gift shop and good second hand bookshop.

I was able to fit in a quick visit to the House enroute to some local weekend work. I hadn't been to the house for perhaps 25 years and as I was almost passing it was worth a brief stop for a look and a coffee.
No complaints about the house or the cafe, but the issue happened on my arrival, I was welcomed, my memberhip card was scanned, I declined the offer of a map and I exited into the garden, I had hardly gone more than 20 paces when someone shouted loudly at me suggesting that I hadn't paid, I confirmed that I had, but perhaps the next time the staff member was in doubt it would be better to attract my attention more subtly .
As I was leaving a little later I was asked if I had enjoyed my visit, I confirmed that I had, but... and explained why. The manager then wanted to explain that she had caused the fuss, I suggested that next she should check with her staff, she then got very defensive and aggressive and told me she had, eventually she admitted that she had only checked with one staff member, and later on it was confirmed that I had shown my card, she wouldn't back down, and only after I suggest that an apology was in order, she offered the " I'm sorry you felt that way" type of response, which is no apology at all. Sadly I decided that nothing more was to be gained and left, but it left a rather poor taste to an otherwise pleasant hour in the country.

Lots of dogs without any recall being exercised in the Deer park - nightmare for any reactive dog. We left as not much else to do there. Disappointing

Petworth is a lovely National Trust house and garden. I thought it was a lot of walking to get to the house from the car park but on the way back we had a lift with the little car that goes round. The house is superb and the historians really interesting - the gardens are lovely but I was bitten by insects quite a lot! The shop was good and the second hand bookshop and the cafe too.

I was very disappointed with Petworth House.
I found most of the rooms very dark & it was very difficult seeing the paintings. They are hung very close to each & some are very high. When one walks into a room choc a block full of unlit paintings it is somehow quite uninspiring.
I have wanted to visit for a long time & found it rather disappointing.

We ar walking the Sussex route from Midhurst to Petworth and would like to walk through the deer park from Uppington to get to Petworth town area instead of walking along the main road. Is it possible to go through the deer park and get into the town without having to pay entrance fees for house and pleasure park?
Skrevet 21. august 2024
I don’t know the answer and many National Trust grounds are fenced off. However if you treat yourselves to the very reasonable NT membership you’ll get the best of both worlds and have all the Trust properties as your playground. We got one and have been loving it this year.

Hi, can you access the deer park via the main car park to the house rather than driving to the separate car park & paying parking again?
Skrevet 19. juni 2023
Yes. We parked in one place and did the lot. But see the website for opening hours for the different parts.
Skrevet 21. juni 2023
Is the main park open anytime i.e early at dawn for photography purposes?
Skrevet 19. september 2020
No there are opening times. At present you have to book a time slot and your name is checked as you enter the car park

Hi there, over the winter months we carry out a deep clean of the rooms and the collection and that does mean taking certain items out of display for further care. Our Christmas event, A Grand Tour Christmas opens on Saturday 2 December until 1 January 2018. From that point we then return to our Treasuring Petworth tours highlighting aspects of the collection in selected rooms and the conservation work we carry out. From 13 January you can also book a ticket for the William Blake in Sussex: Visions of Albion exhibition and see works on loan from collections like the British Museum and Tate that focus on the artists relationship with the county, where he lived for three years. Tickets are available to pre-book on our website. From 26 March we will open the house as free flow and the collection will be out as before.
