Hands on Rock is a great walk up to a cave of indigenous stencil art. The reserve is culturally significant to the Wiradjuri people, it was traditionally a place for only women and children.

The rock art consists of over 100 hand stencils of women and children, emu feet and other motifs.

It's a privilege to be able to view such ancient and important art in this country.

A beautiful area and easy going walk to see a piece of Indigenous history that connects the past to the present.

Just watch the road entering as it’s a bit bumpy in a small car, and little lizard friends who run across the road!

Its amazing that such historical, culturally important paintings are just available for viewing in the bush. Worth a visit.

Great walk leading to some ancient aboriginal art - information boards provide a brief but good explanation of the significance and background of the area, the art and the culture of our first people.
This is an easy walk with a slight climb at the end of the walk.

The turn off is easy to miss so keep an eye out for it. And then a short section of the road to the car-park is unsealed but would be ok for most vehicles.

A short drive from Mudgee, and if going the to the Drip you are almost here so keep going and have a look at this site.

On the way here there is a rock naturally shaped like a frog - it is literally on the side of the road and you will see a sign saying “Frog Rock”

When visiting this site we were incredibly lucky to meet a couple of aboriginal ladies one of whom had a good deal of knowledge about the place.
She told us that the main gallery was a birthing area and therefore taboo for aboriginal men. She invited me as a non-aboriginal to have a look but said if I felt strange I would know why. I'm a complete sceptic but before I knew it I had a really emotional, melancholic feeling come over me. I can't explain it.
We were also told that the area to the south of the main gallery was for men. Its a natural fortress enabling the men to protect the vulnerable women from raiders.

Please treat this place with respect.

Had the whole spot to ourselves. Wonderful atmosphere and scenery.
Art was sporadic and limited but still interesting to try and spot.
As others have mentioned turn off is not signed and easily missed. 500m north of The Drip Gorge turning on the left. Also signed as a mine site entrance. Drive in is rutted and has some washouts but should be easy enough in a 2wd if you pick your line

The turnoff from the main road is easy to miss so watch out for it just after too the left just after crossing a bridge.

The vehicle track down of about 500m is a little rough but opens out into a pretty day use parking area.

From here it is a 600m pleasant walk to the art site with the last 100m or do a little more steep then the rest which is easy going.

It is a pretty spot when you get there: the hand prints are somewhat faded but still discernible.

A pleasant diversion on a nice day.

About thirty kilometres north east of Gulgong in New South Wales is a walk to the Hands on the Rock aboriginal ancient site. It’s a bit of a scramble up to the art but well worth it.
Suggest take a picnic lunch and do this walk in the morning and then a few hundred metres away on the other side of the road is a beautiful walk into The Drips which would be perfect location for a picnic. Make sure you do both walks.

After visiting Drip Gorge you can visit the Hands on Rock. The hand paintings are visible but not very easy to see. We saw a large goanna climb a tree nearby, and I got also bitten by a bee so quite a memorable day on all accounts. Its quite a steep climb towards the end of the walk so sturdy walking shoes required and reasonable fitness, although it was a hot day which made the last 10 minutes a little more difficult.
