We are always interested in and fascinated by local history and Tasmania certainly gave us plenty to ponder, sometimes overload. The museum is housed in a former church, staffed by volunteers and contains numerous items of historical significance to the town and the Huon Valley. There is a plethora of documents, old photographs and artefacts dating to pioneering years plus information on the French expedition of D'entrecasteaux. I wonder how the country would look under French rule. Worth visiting if in the area.

This museum was established in 2000, is staffed by volunteers and costs a gold coin donation to enter.

There are maps, archival records, memorabilia, photos, artefacts and objects of all manner and shape etc depicting the history of Cygnet and the surrounding Huon Valley.

Of interest was the information on display regarding the French expeditions, including those of D'entrecasteaux, to Tasmania and to Cygnet in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Also of interest where the hundreds of personal accounts of residents and former residents describing the conditions they encountered growing up in the region which must of taken hundreds of hours to accumulate. Far longer than we had time available to read them.

Worth a visit if you are into history of the region.

Well worth a visit, when in the charming village of Cygnet in the Huon Valley.

The museum has lots information, maps and photographs on the history of Tasmania, and the under appreciated connection with the early French explorers, like D’ Entrecasteaux who arrived on a scientific mission, long before the British military, who were looking for somewhere to house the convicts from overflowing prisons in Britain.

The French were most impressed with the quality of the timber and the local countryside on offer, and even established vegetable gardens, to provide fresh food for the crew.

The history of Cygnet is also featured, and there is interesting information on the development of the township over the years, including the original uses of buildings.

I was on a day trip to Cygnet and was making the most of my time to see everything I could. The return bus to Hobart wasn't until 2.20pm so I had plenty of time to fill. The museum was housed in the old meeting hall and the wooden floorboards creaked underfoot, bringing many memories back of other like-minded museums in small towns. This building housed a many varied collection of the town's history, starting with the brief French occupation, including some very styilized drawings of the indigenous people of the day. You wonder sometimes why they drew them so differently from what they actually were/are. The chap running the place was delightfully friendly and we talked a fair bit about Cygnet, Hobart and Tassie in general. A lovely little stop off.

Fascinating exhibits including the French explorers who came long before the British.

Well worth a visit to gain a better idea of Tasmanian history.

A small little town that makes you think it hasn’t caught up to the hustle and bustle of today

We went to the local museum, had a look at the local shops, and wandered around this peaceful town

The traders were friendly and up for a chat, some had made the sea change and loved living in Cygnet.

Would go again

This small museum contains a lot of interesting local history from the last 150 years. There are a lot of old photos of people and housing and many family history files. Although the museum is supervised and questions can be asked, the visitor is free to browse the collection

This small museum is located in the centre of Cygnet with some relatively interesting displays but quite old fashioned. You can go in for a donation. It is Ok to look at if you are passing through but not a must see.
