Fantastic hidden gem. A definite must visit. Loads to explore and wander about. Really well looked after for a free heritage attraction.
The visitors centre isn’t always open as it’s run by volunteers but u can get a map online if you want to follow what each of the buildings are.
If you visit with small children there’s a lovely little park behind the car park and picnic area. Nice cheeky addition to the trip.

Really impressed by this site. Whilst we visited mid week and the actual mine is only open on Sundays or Bank hols (it is run by volunteers so no criticism there) there was plenty to see above ground. The area is well kept and what I would consider unspoilt. The information boards were interesting although perhaps more detail of what daily life was like? The actual site is larger than you initially think. Parking is easy to find at snailbeach with a very short walk up to the mine.

This place is wonderful. It is very well marked so you know what building did what or who lived in it. I enjoyed seeing how well kept everything was so you could visualize what the mind looked like when it was a functioning mine. There is free parking nearby and it is a great place to walk your pets.

We did a guided tour of the mine on one of the open days - I believe that pre-booking is encouraged but we turned up and were able to get onto one of the tours. For safety reasons the mine is only open during tours. I went with a child aged 7 on the longer tour. My younger child aged 4 went on the short tour. Both require hard-hats and miners' lamps which are provided. The longer tour requires short climbs up slippery slopes in the mine, and ducking down narrow passageways so some general level of fitness is required. Fascinating history and the volunteer guides really brought it to life. There is a small museum explaining the background, and lots of semi-restored buildings to view. The whole Stiperstones area is great for walking. Recommended for a slightly unusual day out if one is interested in history or has a sense of adventure.

We visited early in the morning. Unattended so we wandered round at our own pace. Also carried on up the road and to the left following the old postal route.
Really enjoyed the visit.

This old mine exhibition is run by volunteers and they do a grand job.
There is a little underground walk you can go on and plenty to see of the old workings.
Well worth a visit.

Visited on a sunny Friday morning, nobody else was here so we bumbled around unrushed with camera and dog. I love a spot of history with my scenic countryside. We parked in the village hall as suggested and walked up to the big chimney on resting hill. A short walk, uphill so not recommended if you don’t have basic fitness. Next time we’ll head on to the miners cottages and maybe take in a more organised event.

We booked for the 3pm underground tour of Snailbeach Lead mine on 2 June 2019. Our guide, Calvin Lake, was brilliant. So knowledgeable and so generous with that knowledge - and patient with all my questions! The other staff members/volunteers clearly loved their work and were equally generous. Never expected to go on such a tour but I am so pleased we did.
Thanks guys!

We stayed at the Inn just up the road from here, so we stopped and had a walk around.
You can park the car at the bottom of the hill at the Village hall Car Park, which is a good size and asks for a donation of £1.
You then walk up the hill for around 5 minutes where you will get great views and you will start seeing some of the remains of the mines. There are various buildings around that are to do with the mine dotted around and up the hill.
I believe you can go into the mines for free on certain days, but we went on a Sunday, so nobody was around.
Definitely worth a visit. The history is really interesting.

Much of the original mining atmosphere is retained on this site which spreads across a hillside and valley at the small village of Snailbeach. See the original mine buildings, blacksmiths forge, engine sheds and mine shafts. Go underground into a horizontal mine for the authentic atmosphere (conducted trip only on mines open days), walk around the village which has many old miners cottages. This is a genuinely authentic experience day out and great for kids. Afterwards don't miss a walk over the local hills which are very beautiful. The site is managed and run by local volunteers so be sure to check when it is open before you visit - mine open days.
