This was an interesting place. We went to Lava lands and the Paulina lake/falls area. The waterfall at Paulina wasn't huge, but it was easy to get to and was very pretty. There are 2 viewing areas, top and bottom. The top is wheelchair accessible. The drive to a view point is scary. Very narrow gravel road with no side rails. If cars are coming opposite direction, one must pull as far over as possible and stop. The view from the top is a good one. The lakes are pretty too. At lava land we took the shuttle to the top of the butte. That was a nice view too. We also went to the water fall. I would like to go back and explore more.

What a pleasant surprise this place was. My wife and I enjoyed our visit here as the views were fantastic, the hikes pleasant, and the information boards helpful in understanding the natural forces that came together to form the place.

Spent the day hiking and exploring the area. It is beautiful and definitely worth seeing. The lava fields are very interesting. The lakes in the actual crater are absolutely amazing.

Our main stops were the Big Obsidian Flow Trail, the Visitor Center, the Trail of the Molten Land, and Paulina Falls (plus overlooks and stops randomly driving around). Everywhere we went was crazy landscapes, beautiful vistas, and interesting rocks and trees. This area deserved a few days to explore, but we had about half a day to see what we could. I would definitely visit again if we are in the area.

One thing to know, you have to get a timed ticket to drive to the top of the butte. We walked to the viewpoint which was a good walk and still lots to see.

So much fun in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. After visiting Paulina Falls, we drove further to the Big Obsidian Flow trailhead. We loved this hike. We made our way up to the 2nd park bench and got some great pictures. So amazing. And if you're a LOTR fan, you can pretend you're Frodo and Sam heading into Mordor. Ha! "One does not simply walk into Mordor." - unless you're here at the Big Obsidian Flow. :-)

When people think about volcanos in the Pacific Northwest, they usually think of Mt. St. Helens and maybe Crater Lake. Newberry should be on that list - perhaps even more impressive than either of these because of the greater variety.
We highly recommend the Big Obsidian Flow. It is a huge lava flow of pumice and obsidian that is just amazing. From the top, there is a beautiful landscape all influenced by volcanoes.
It is best to pair this visit with going to the visitor's center to understand more about the area around, but there are informational plaques on the walk.
Wear good shoes - obsidian is sharp.

We took the shuttle up to the top which was really nice. The museum was informative and relaxing. There was a walk up but we didn't take that although what we did walk was great. All iin all a very nice visit.

My husband and I are planning on visiting Oregon this coming summer - I just read a review that the visitor center for this park and the ability to get to the top was closed due to Covid19 in August, anyone know if it will be open this coming summer?? Just curious! Thanks!
Skrevet 9. november 2020
It was open to hike in Sept 2020. The visitor center was closed but all else open. Probably will be open in 2021.
Skrevet 9. november 2020
is this part of deschute nat'l forest? what is the entry fee (just visiting, not camping or other activities)?
Skrevet 21. mars 2020
Yes it's part of the National Forest. The day-use is $5 per vehicle, or display a National Park Pass or Northwest Forest Pass. Passes are available at the Lava Lands Visitor Center (currently closed). Check to make sure the sites are open before you go; some are only open in summer, and some may be closed due to Covid-19.

Hello! We would love to see the waterfalls, what trail do you take to get to them?
Skrevet 13. august 2018
Sorry, I didn't see this until 3 months too late for you. I hope you found the well marked car exit to Paulina Falls. The other falls that are gorgeous, though smaller, are found about 2 miles hiking in, starting from McKay Campground onto the Peter Skene Ogden'sTrail.

Good review Jerry. Did you happen to notice how much longer the visitor center and shuttle will be open? I am planning a trip there last week of Oct. The National Forest Service website is temporarily disabled. Thanks, Deidre

You've gotten accurate answers. I will add that the road to Paulina Peak is closed even after the rest of the place opens. It all depends on the snowfall the previous year. This year's snowfall is been very heavy, so if you want to go to that area I suggest advance inquiries.

We'll be passing through in about a week, and just found this amazing area. I think we'll be able to spend about 4 hours or so and still get to our end of day destination. What hikes/walks would you recommend? and, how are the mosquitoes this time of year? Thanks!
Skrevet 17. juli 2016
You can see a lot right off of Hwy 97 at the Lava Butte exit. Lava Butte has an easy path through lava fields, preserved trees and spectacular Cascade views. There's also a great paved bike path to a river trail and paved road to the same trailhead. And the lava caves are at the same exit. You could easily pack it all into 4 hours because there is so much at that one exit.
Skrevet 17. juli 2016
we are in an RV, are the roads wide enough for a 27 ft. rig?
Skrevet 13. august 2015
I agree...most roads should be fine, but not the road to Paulina Peak
Skrevet 18. august 2015
If we only have a morning say 3 hours to look around, what would you suggest we take in here?
Skrevet 23. juli 2015
I agree that the Lava Lands Visitor Center would give you a lot of information about the area if time is limited. At the same location (on the way back to Highway 97) you can go through the Lava River Cave. They have lanterns to rent as there are no lights inside. It takes around an hour and fifteen minutes to go to the end and back. It is cold when you get to the deepest part so bring a jacket. Dogs are not allowed in the cave and the floor is uneven.
