Private roads closed :0(
okt. 2021
Contacted BLM to see if trail was open before we headed out from Eugene...its the end of fire season...they said it was open, and sent directions.
We got as far as some private road owned by Weyerhauser, the gate was locked with no way around it to get where we wanted to go...we were only about 10 or 11 miles into the trip. Will try again in a month or so.

When we were there we could not get in because they frequently log in this area and use explosives. On the internet it gives you a kind of hidden map listing of another way to get in if the main gate is closed, but we could not find anything that resembled what it was saying so unfortunately did not get to see this. When we put it on our to do list there was nothing about it possibly being closed and we did travel a ways to go and see it.

The Weyerhaeuser gate was locked on Falls City mainline so we diverted to the 1400 from the south, which added 15 miles to the trip. I’m already kind of familiar with the Valsetz area and the directions seemed really confusing and overdone. In a nutshell, it’s the 100 road(it’s marked)off the mainline before Gravel Creek or after depending on which way you come(Gravel Creek is still washed out). Once on the 100 road, stay left the entire route, which is easy because most roads to the right are gated or active logging areas(pay attention to the signs!). As you get farther in you see little wooden stakes that say VOG and it’s painted on a tree. On the BLM or Oregon Hiker instructions pay attention to where you need to turn right, the only right turn once on the 100. The hike, once there, is not for the meek or physically handicapped. There are steepish portions and it’s all down hill to the loop. Once on the loop, the trail is quite often exposed roots and it is a trail and not a wide, paved path. If you go during the week, remember that this is a very active logging area and you will be borrowing their roads to get in. Log trucks communicate their location by C.B. on a set channel(you’ll see it posted on a tree as you go in along with mile markers) so a C.B. is handy and defensive backwoods driving skills a must. I suggest a weekend trip for most people. Good tires are a must have(I run 10 ply All Terrains)along with a good spare, check that your spare is aired up and in good condition. The gravel they use is log truck approved but not street tire appropriate. Go in on a full tank of fuel and check that your fluids are topped off. A big reminder that the mainline from Gravel Creek to Moonshine Park is absolutely off limits to travelers on the week days and is posted so on either end. This is not a place you want to be when a log truck comes highballing around a corner! It’s a long drive and an adventure to get there and if you feel brave enough, give it a go!

Mountains Roads, Scary So Don't Forget Your Big Boy Pants.

The roads are good. Driver approach is key and respect your surroundings. Loggers are done early. It's true about the trucks! I have had to make quick decisions driving up there in order to live, 2 close calls in 40 years driving the roads. If you can't get clear of danger it's probably your fault. Slow speeds windows down use all your self preservation tools. See things clearly, listen for the trucks. Always stay focused always looking for escape routes. I've literally had to cross lanes and drive up the bank to the left because the trucks have to swing wide due to the off tracking of the trailer. 3 choices and 2 involved death. Head on collision, fly off into a canyon or go up the bank. Safety is achieved with planning, preparing and making good choices. ALWAYS BRING WINDOW CLEANING ESSENTIALS. Remember your listing with windows down and with the windy road and all the dust combined with the play of light and shadows absolutely will distort vision. The reduced reaction time due to lost perceptive time is on you for negligence and seeing dangers in time. A split second can cost your life. ALWAYS have emergency kit. Not home depot safety but a real thought out kit. Park facing out and downhill. Dead battery can ruin your day. Check your spare. I bring 2. Logger special rock kills pass. Vehicle Tires. Let some one know your plans. Respect the plan and communicate your safe return to your sentinel.

Beautiful

Gorgeous place to visit. But not if you have trouble walking. Most sites say it is an Easy hike. It is not. It is very up and down hill, steep in some places. Lots of roots in the path. You have to climb over/ inbetween trees. Amazingly beautiful and quiet. You hear nothing but birds, and breeze in the trees. Very peaceful. Take a picnic lunch and enjoy your day there. (No toilets).
Directions from Google Maps made us go towards Lincoln city. The gates were closed and signs all over saying "Not a road to Valley of the Giants". You have to go through Falls City.

Disappointed
aug. 2018 • Par
My husband and I headed toward Valley of the Giants yesterday, coming from the southern way via Siletz to Logsden and that way... right past Moonshine Park up the gravel road you will hit a big white gate that is open but a big sign says closed to public on the weekdays.... It was a Tuesday, so that applied to us. I was like screw it, what can happen... then I remember reading someone else's review mentioning almost dying coming head on with a logging truck. We decided to not throw caution to the wind, and turned around after proceeding just a few minutes. We decided to head the other way to another route into our destination. Which is a 2.5 hour drive from our current location. Car sick thirty later... We ended up not going but ended up on another adventure. We did get to see Drift Creek Falls covered bridge on our adventure which was awesome. And that is what I took a few pictures of.

Bad idea as 18 wheelers (Huge Log Trucks) working one lane road !!
jun. 2018 • Venner
We knew the road to Valley of the Giants was remote but ... give me a break !! Came really close to a head on collision with a huge log truck full of big trees, No Way He could stop on this one lane road ... 😳 Thank You Jesus there was a small, very small turn out so I could pull over - quickly, and Without falling off the freaking Mountain !!! Scared us beyond belief, but continued on as my friend was determined to make it to the Valley of the Giants .. (she wasn’t driving) Finally came upon the road headed to the trail .. It was even Worse than the one we were on - more narrow - I saw the orange tape used to tell loggers where to turn and this road was marked that way (I’m from Mississippi) My family is in lumber industry & I well know the signs for log trucks .. so I knew I wasn’t going down that road ...
Would love to see Valley of the Giants, but I’m gonna wait until the direction to and from is better marked and No Log Trucks !!

If you choose this trail, please .. have plenty of gas and know there is No phone service/gps and it takes about 1 1/2 hours from Highway 18 to get to the point ya have to turn around (at least we did) ... if we had traveled on would have been another hour 45 mins to get to trail head !!.. to walk the 1 mile trail it would be way after dark and there is no way I travel a one way logging truck road in the dark.

Would be nice if the person that posted review dated March 27,2018 would show the route they took as the one trip advisor suggested wasn’t very safe at all ..
