Really not much to see. Felt it was overpriced. No sea lions in the cave but they are honest and transparent about the fact that you might not see them in the cave. We did spot some out in the open water. Be prepared for lots of steps to get to the elevator that takes you down the cave area. Also be prepared because sea lions are smelly creatures!

Thank you for visiting Sea Lion Caves.
Sea Lion Caves is an all-natural wildlife preserve and marine sanctuary. No animals are held in captivity and all come and go as they please. All of the animals choose this naturally formed sea cave as their home and private sanctuary. Our visitors enjoy the opportunity to look behind the scenes at how these animals live, play and interact, undisturbed in their natural habitat. At times, the animals are outside of the cave. It is our policy to inform all visitors, before they purchase a ticket, if the animals are not in the cave. We offer those guests that do purchase a ticket a discounted price as well as a free return voucher that is valid for a full year. Many of our guests tell us that seeing America's largest naturally formed sea cave is worth the price of admission even when the animals are not in the cave.
It is truly an honor for us to preserve and protect this naturally formed monument

There is no need to spend time here. The Oregon coast along Cape Perpetua is astonishing at every turn, and there's plenty of free parking to enjoy the amazing views. For sea lions, go to Newport, and get up close with them in the harbor (they are amazingly noisy). This place is the worst kind of tourist trap.

Thanks for stopping at Sea Lion Caves.
Sea Lion Caves is an all-natural wildlife preserve and marine sanctuary. None of the animals at Sea Lion Caves are held in captivity. All come and go as they please. These animals have chosen this cave, which happens to be America's largest naturally formed sea cave that formed over 25 million years ago, as their home and private sanctuary. The Cave is 12 stories tall and as wide as a football field. Our visitors enjoy the unique opportunity to look behind the scenes at how these amazing animals live, play and interact with each other in their natural setting inside the cave. Every guest enjoys an experience unlike any other as the inhabitants, the tide, and the weather conditions are always changing. Many of our guests tell us that their visit to Sea Lion Caves was the highlight of their Oregon coast trip.
There are many great places to see in Oregon and we believe, as the majority of our visitors tell us, that Sea Lion Caves is one of the top things to see and do in the state of Oregon.

We rarely stop at roadside attractions. But, who could pass by going down more than 200 feet by elevator into a cave open to the sea, and filled with sea lions? We went, we looked -- we saw, we smelled -- and after a short stay we went back up via the elevator. The outdoor views were exceptional, up and down the coast, as well. The gift shop was huge and the lines were long, but they had a great selection of kitsch. Although my husband went outside I stood in line to buy a Sparkly "Back Scratcher" embossed with Sea Lion Cave for my back scratcher collection. It's difficult today to find any new ones with the name of a place on them.

When we are traveling we have to be in the right mood to stop at touristy spots like the Sea Lion Caves, but when we do they can be interesting and fun. This was true for the Sea Lion Caves on the coast between Florence and Yachats. For $16 per person you can wander around the observation platforms for views on the sea lion colonies and then ride the elevator 208 feet down into the cave. In the caves you can view the sea lions, the sea birds and even observe the Heceta Head Lighthouse from a distance. There is a lot of historical information. The staff is friendly but they make sure you follow the rules.
The building is right on highway 101. There is limited parking and it can be challenging getting parked and into the building with cars and semi-trucks passing through the narrow area. Still, the stop is worth it and we had a good visit.

Rude staff a younger girl working in the gift shop. Wont be back. Sad because we always made a point to go to the sea lion caves on our vacations but this time was different. We were treated very poorly.

The sea lions at Sea Lion Caves are Steller sea lions The Steller sea lion, also known as the northern sea lion, is the largest member of the Otariid (eared seal) family. The species is named for the naturalist and explorer Georg Wilhelm Steller, who first described them in 1741.

A great place to see (and hear and smell) sea lions, both in the cave and outside. You also get a nice view of one of the nearby lighthouses.
Most of the parking is across the road, which has curves to both sides and where the cars go relatively quickly. Be careful, especially with kids.

I would recommend this as a stop on your Oregon Coast road trip. I’m not sure I would go out of the way to see it, but if it’s on your route , I would definitely stop in. We were at the Sea Lion Caves around noon and saw a lot of sea lions out on the rocks. We only saw one sea lion in the caves. Staff in the gift shop were super friendly and welcoming.

This was a great stop! It was $18 to go down to the caves. There are also some good viewpoints past the entry point before you get to the caves. While walking to the elevator keep a look out for sea lions on the rocks down below! We heard them before we saw them. The cave itself does not take long to go through, but is fun. There were about 40 sea lions in the cave when we went. There were also a ton of birds to see if you go up the stairs.

It may be possible but if it's rainy the steep hill getting to the elevator that goes down could be a problem. If you have one that is equipped for more rugged terrain that would probably work, but if it's the standard kind it may be hard. Also, parking is across a highway on a curve that may be dangerous to cross if it goes too slow.

They are there year round. Weekdays are less busy. Also if you want to see sea lions without paying, they are everywhere at the Newport bayfront about 30 Miles North of sea lions cave. At the bayfront, they have taken over a few docks and you can get closer to them than at the cave.
What is the best time to go, low tide or high tide? Does it matter?
SherrieA

I'm siggest low tide. When it's low tide, more sea lions will be gathered on the rocks below the lookout and also lying on the rocks in the caves. Hope this information helps!
