Using the Green Line Streetcar, we traveled for 30 minutes from our Inn in NW Portland to Moody Ave & Tilikum Crossing where we got off & were introduced to the recent transformations of the South Waterfront Park / Wilamette River/Tillicum Crossing area. Short walk to the Halpern Fountains. Lots of activity here. Students of OHSU Robertson Life Science we’re going about their business.
The day was windy with brilliant sunshine so people were out sunning themselves in the south facing cafes, Starbucks & Flying Elephants Deli, outside the Robertson Life Science Science Building & surrounding South Waterfront MAX Station.
Tri-met, MAX light rail, Street Cars, runners, roller blades, scooters, walkers, cyclists, families with kids, dogs .....all can share the glorious pedestrian crossing that joins West & East Portland. No cars or trucks allowed. Bridge built September 2015. Earthquake proof, withstanding an 8 & above.
Seek out the beautifully written plaques, located on the north outer lanes/side rails of this beautifully constructed bridge. Gentle curves give a sense of serenity. The plaques speak of the often unknown Tilikum Native American’s role in earlier history of Portland/ Oregon State commercialism
One can access OMSI/Planetarium via Eastbank Espanade as you cross over from West side to the East side. Eat @ OMSI’s Theory. You can see the submarine moorage @ OMSI right from the bridge. It was used in the movie “Hunt For The Red October.” There is parking nearby OMSI Museum ($5). Check out the Mt Hood Brewing Co in a train car @ Tilikum Station.
Impressive views of Portland & it’s many bridges & Willamette River activity.
This Calatrava type bridge provides an intimate feel as the river is alive underneath as you walk (both sides of the bridge) over & interact.
Check out the cables with the LED lighting. As night falls, the LED’s light up the bridge. The colors of the lights are controlled by the temperatures of the river. To be able to experience the rich history of this area is remarkable of Portland values.
Be forewarned. Cyclists ( rent a orange/ electric bike, downtown side & explore) ZOOM past walkers & runners with great speed, no matter what THE age. Stay in marked lanes or you might get hurt.
Sadly, the homeless is very evident if walking on the eastside especially. Be careful walking @ night.
Do not miss the treasure! This is a great place to find exhaust free exercise year around!

While investigating the waterfront area, I stumbled upon this amazing park. It's surrounded by the marina and other activities, so it's a surprise to find this peaceful place within the busy city.
Make sure you get there; especially, when you're looking to relax and think about life!

Este hermoso parque, de gran extensión, es ideal para caminatas o picnics, dada las grandes comodidades que ofrece para estas actividades.

This is a nice place to go at the end of the waterfront park. There are several ponds with lily pads. It is quiet. On a sunny day you can see the blue sky and clouds reflected in the ponds.
