Meander along paths through groves of different species atop a hill overlooking downtown, distant mountains, and connecting some of Portland's best destinations in Washington Park. This oasis of calm and green serves visitors and residents as the most accessible curated "woods" on Portland's west side, and connects seamlessly with the apparently unlimited miles of trails in Forest Park. You can hike the gently hill trails of Tualatin mountain for over 30 miles from Hoyt Arboretum, or visit for an hour and a brief leg-stretcher. The options are almost unlimited.

We spent a day in Washington Park on our first visit to Portland. We expected to enjoy a walk around the arboretum, but were overwhelmed by the beauty and scope of the park. The arboretum is organized around tree and floral species. After a brief chat with a very helpful docent, we chose to walk the Redwood and Wildwood trails - about a 90 minute walk. The trails were very well maintained with information on species posted. We were impressed by the park as well as the friendliness of the many guides we met along our walk.
The trails we walked were moderately difficult. Not for strollers, or those with mobility issues. Bring water and wear sturdy shoes.

Such a gorgeous place to hang out with family and friends and enjoy taking a hike in the woods. It was an absolutely beautiful day when we went and the forest was full of life. We loved the hike we took!

What an enjoyable walk through the different types of trees. I was not able to do the full trail, but definitely enjoyed the hike to the Redwood Deck. The smell of the trees change as you walk through the different forests. The size of many of the trees are overwhelming. How old could they be and what stories would they be able to tell?

We were very early for our Japanese Garden entry and took the shuttle to this arboretum. Rhododendrons & dogwoods in bloom. Some Magnolias too. The winding paths and views remind me of English gardens. Anticipation at almost every turn.

I guess we're too early for the fall colors, but it's still lovely to walk among the tall trees and see so many varieties of them in one hike.
The Visitor Center is closed but there is at least one person outside selling merchandise and giving out info. There are only 2 restrooms.
Parking is $2/hr at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Visitor Center. You can pay by Parking Kitty app. There is limited free parking near trail heads.
Though there are so many trails, most of them are only 30 minutes long, one way. In 1.5 hours, we managed to hike from Maple Trail in the south to the Redwood Trail in the north. We parked at the Archery Range which is free, but has only a Port-o-Pottie.

We had a couple hours and were in the area so decided to look around Hoyt Arboretum. There are many trails of all lengths in the park. We walked a few that meandered through some redwood, spruce and fir trees. It was interesting and worth the visit.

We actually hiked here twice on our recent trip. The trails are great and there is a wide array of trees. Great weather and a nice way to stretch our legs

Are dogs on lease welcome on the trails?

Yes, so long as they’re kept on a leash at all times. And please, PLEASE, carry a bag to pick up after them.

You can take a bus from the Zoo station up to the visitors center "Tree House". Service is infrequent in the winter for the number 63 so be sure to check a schedule or the wair can be nasty! I like the Conifer side of the arboretum in the winter because most of the Conifers are evergreen. This part of the arboretum is East of the Visitors Center. They have samples of conifers from China, India, Africa, S.America, Europe and the Pacific N. W. There are a good number of large native conifers on the flowering tree side, too (the side closer to the zoo). You'll see Douglas Fir, Western Red Cedar, Hemlock. Both sides are pretty and the trails nice. We've had record rainfall in Dec., so expect some mud. No tickets are needed. If you drive you pay for parking.
