The Grotto is a beautiful sanctuary owned by the Catholic Church, but open to everyone. It is an oasis of lush gardens, walking trails, a beautiful glass-walled chapel with a view overlooking the mountains, trees, and vistas. They hold a Saint Peregrine Mass, as St. Peregrine is the Patron Saint of cancer and life-threatening illnesses, and people often go to these masses that are looking for solace, peace, spiritual healing, and support. We first heard of it from my uncle who was battling cancer.
When visiting relatives from out of state, we came here to look around. We came in December, so it was cold. At night they have a Festival of Lights, but the group I was with were all too cold to want to stay at night. In December, they also had a life-sized nativity scene outside, in front of the rocks.
It just all gives a sense of beauty and peace, and is a great place to go if you are needing some quiet introspection, want to have a peaceful walk, meditate, or, if battling an illness and want to attend the masses, to feel some uplifiting support. There was even a proposal happening, with flower petals strewn into the shape of a large heart while we were there, as the ambience is so serene.
People travel from far distances to visit the Grotto. It gives you a sense of peace, serenity, and nature. It is good for the soul.

Wonderful place that invites reflection and gathering. We had the opportunity to participate in a very special celebration. There is a very organized community that should be supported. Don’t forget to respect ceremony times and not consume food. Every corner of the space is amazing.

We happened to stumble across this gorgeous place on our way to the airport. It was just lovely, peaceful, and the gardening impeccable. We enjoyed strolling thru both upper and lower levels. Our time ended with some prayers.

The Grotto is located in eastern Portland, close to the airport. Big free parking lot within the premises.
The whole complex consists of two parts - lower and upper. Lower part is free, the upper paying.
The main star - Pieta in the Grotto is in the lower part and looks majestic. Also, in the lower part is the Way of the Cross - beautiful path through the woods, as well the Cathedral and visitor center.
Kind lady at the visitor center played a movie for only two of us explaining the Sanctuary history, which was interesting and informing. Here you can buy big dedicated candles to light them by Pieta.
The upper part is reachable via elevator and consists mostly of international shrines.
Our visit was very spiritual and interesting and took us slightly over an hour, highly recommend.

One hundred years ago a grotto was created into this incredible rock face where soon later was installed a beautiful reproduction of Michaelangelo’s Pieta. This beautiful work of man’s craftsmanship stands today amidst an inner-city secluded area inspiring meditation and solemnity inspiring self-contemplation and thoughtful introspection in nature’s beauty within a 62-acre ecological enclave. One can leisurely, yet wondrously meander the walk paths of this remarkable garden/park to quietly ponder, picnic or serenely contemplate the open seclusion of nature’s marvelous wonder. When visiting Portland, this is a must visit – enjoy a couple of hours of tranquility. It is truly a gem and isolated treasure within the bustle of the city.

Absolutely beautiful. Feels like you’re in another country. A must visit whether you are a religious/spiritual individual or not. It’s similar to a Japanese garden- tranquil and peaceful.

Secret hideout outside Portland that is amazing. Such a quiet reflective, respectful place. It served as a lasting memory from our trip to Portland. The views were a little smoky due to the local fires but well worth the visit.

I visited the Grotto on Easter Sunday. It was a rainy day, but it didn't spoil the spiritual experience of being there. I went up to the higher level and peacefully walked the paths that winded around various statues, a labyrinth, and prayer spots. The gift shop had a host of religious and spiritual objects, books, candles, etc.

The upper garden was definitely worth visiting. Took about half an hour to walk around and then time to look out from the observation deck. Token for lift up to gardens was $9.95 and you can see the shrine for free.

Who’s important this place on the faith? I tried to look online but didn’t find anything. Is any apparition of the Virgin?

While dogs are not allowed on the upper level, they are allowed outdoors on the first level, both in the plaza and in the botanical garden. The Grotto holds special events throughout the year, including a Blessing of the Animals each July. Well-behaved leashed dogs are allowed.
Skrevet 3. juli 2017
$5 if you want to go up to the garden.

Since I live in IN, I have no clue of how far it is, but if you use Google or MapQuest, you can get your answer right away. Good luck in your search!

are dogs on a leash allowed on pathways?
Skrevet 6. august 2016
From the FAQ of the Grotto website:
Pets
Properly restrained pets are allowed on the grounds of the lower level. No pets are allowed on the upper level, or in the buildings. Service animals are allowed in all areas of The Grotto.
I didn't see anyone with pets when i visited there.

Is there public transportation from the downtown area to the Grotto?
Skrevet 19. juli 2016
Yes you can get to the Grotto from downtown by taking a tri-met bus.
if you caught a bus at SW 6th and W Burnside (Stop ID 792):
Board 12-Barbur/Sandy Blvd to Parkrose TC
(The Grotto stop is ID 5046)
this option is estimated to take 37 minutes travel time.
Trimet has a web site. They are and organization. (trimet + org) They have a trip planner that you can use to plan a trip with to get there. Just type in where you are going to and where you are starting from. It will generate a potential trip plan that will tell you the details. And options you have.
and you can enter a different starting place closer to where you will be downtown.
Adult one way far is $2.50

Hi, we are planning a pilgrimage for April, visiting a Holy Door and spending time meditating. This sounds exactly what we are looking for. Wherever we will be staying is a problem since there is no transportation. Public transportation is ok but we must walk quite a bit distance to bus stops, which I am unable to do. Is there a regular shuttle that goes from the Grotto to different areas around? We are thinking something like San Diego has that people can get off and on at their leisure at different sites. Thank you.
Skrevet 15. mars 2016
There is not a shuttle I am aware of. That would be lovely if there was! Maybe call The Grotto & inquire, perhaps they will have a suggestion. I found everyone very helpful! Enjoy! Can't wait to return! Blessings.
