A must see, but possibly more interesting from the outside than from the inside.
The Cathedral and the view from the back are breath taking. The building is intricately carved with figures and just beautiful. The doorknob of the main entrance is a pair of doves and other surprising details are found within and without.
The stained glass is beautiful and since it was made on site in the early 1910’s Is clear and brilliant. Look very carefully below the main window, and if the sun is shining, you will see a heavenly purple glow/ haze created by the large Blue and Red windows 90 degree on either side.
The tour is free ($5) and done by volunteers and is very short. I know, from other sources, that this Cathedral is full of symbolism, but very little of it is discussed, probably to avoid offending outsiders. I wouldn’t have minded being “offended” by more information.
The story about the reinvention of stained glass is worth the $5 suggested donation, but I would have liked to hear a little more about the founding of the community, and the school, and the construction of the building.
The most valuable thing was the small store, where I purchased a Christmas ornament made from the blue glass used in the windows and a 400 page cookbook created by our tour guide and other female members of the church to highlight favorite family recipes and historic buildings in the community. Our guide said they covered their production costs long ago and therefore it was FREE.
When I got home, on the first flip through I found 5 easy to make recipes. All with surprise ingredients and/or preparations I can’t wait to try. A short history, free hand sketch and accompanying recipe is located at the front of each chapter provides some of the information I wish was present in the tour.
But don’t worry, if you are really interested in the building, there is a complete book about the construction. Also there is a tour($) offered by the adjacent Glencairn Museum. A wide variety of tours are provided by the museum, but will be discussed therein. Our “Christmas in the Castle” tour was excellent in every way - depth, knowledge, pace and extent.

Wonderful day trip spent in the historical district of Bryn Athyn. We enjoyed touring two homes, one built to resemble a castle filled with museum artifacts that rival city museums and the other a beautiful french inspired mansion. We also visited the beautiful cathedral with stain glass windows created on site. The walking views are picturesque. Our tour guides were well informed about the Pitcarin family and their history. Our guide Nina gave us perfect lunch time offerings that fit nicely into our day long excursion. We're looking forward to coming back during the holiday season. Thanks for a wonderful day!

I have visited churches all over the world. This one makes the top 10 listed. It is the most beautiful church in Pennsylvania in my opinion. The architect is stunning. The landscaping is stunning. We lingered far too long in the serene gardens and almost missed our tour time for the mansion. There was a person playing the organ inside which really added to the ambiance of this place of worship.

Beautiful Gothic/Norman Cathedral that is episcopal seat of The General Church of the New Jerusalem, esp. stained glass windows, arches, and grounds.

How remarkable & unexpected to happen upon a majestic Gothic cathedral in a remote stunning bucolic setting just outside Philadelphia! Really it seems a lost world & although the spectacular cathedral was closed when we visited on a recent late Sunday afternoon in June, we look forward to learning more intriguing 17th century history regarding Swedenborg & his followers & returning later in the summer for a organ concert which is sure to be memorable.

You don't have to visit Ireland if you live anywhere near South East PA because this is close enough. There is great architecture, rolling hills, greenery, and old-world craftsmanship you can get to by car. Services are still held here on Sunday but any other day you can come and walk around the grounds and get a guided tour. There are special events listed on the website if you want to come especially for them or to note them so you can avoid the crowds. I guess our guided tour took about 45 minutes but we did ask a lot of question and another tour was in and out which started after us.

Yesterday my cousin and girlfriend came early so we could tour this beautiful church. We had reservations to tour Glencairn Museum but knew we had to come here first. Fortunately we had an excellent tour by a knowledgeable man who was very proud and thrilled to show us the church. The stained glass windows were just magnificent and we learned how they were made with saturated color.
The sanctuary was breathtaking and it was amazing to see the light making the altar being in a purple hue. Our tour guide explained how the church was first in Philadelphia and Mr Pitcairn decided to come into the suburbs to make his dream come true. Shame it was cold outside for the grounds surrounding were lovely and the spring flowers starting to bloom. Will definitely come back again when it is warmer to appreciate the beauty of this area.

Spending a few silent moments in this spiritual space was a welcomed Soul retreat. The grounds are truly breaking and capture the essence of Sacred ground!

The cathedral itself is free, but the museum and house tour are not. Well worth the visit to the museum if you visit the cathedral.
