This place is huge, 7 floors, chock full of interesting stuff. A great lace for early American crafts, tools and artifacts interestingly displayed. Tots of stairs all well lite. Great edge marking and substantial hand rails. Self guided with lots of display readings. Not air conditioned but comfortable with fans. Walk slow there is lots to see. Adequate parking, nice gift shop

We visited Henry Chapman Mercer’s 1912 Fonthill Castle and this 1916 Museum, both tall structures built out of reinforced concrete and decorated with his personalized tiles. The museum stood out for us with the 17,000 18-19th C trade, agriculture and craft tools, dories, coaches, mills and presses that overfill the interior. We used the elevators to access the 7th floor and walked down in a circular fashion for over 1 hour reading the pertinent descriptions.
A new hall describes and details with artifacts the Doane Gang of Outlaws; the British loyalists of 1775-1780.
Excellent and engaging docents assist throughout.

totally unique experience. This is a castle type building totally built from reinforced concrete. It has the feel of a gothic castle bunker. On our visit, I especially enjoyed the very well done special exhibit on the Doane Gang of Outlaws during the Revolutionay War. I'd never heard of them. The rest of the museum consists of an amazing collection of all kind of stuff from daily life in days long past.

One person’s junk is another person’s treasure, particularly when it is suspended in one of the most stunning castles in the country. Tours in the Mercer Museum's castle are self-guided. Take a few hours, talk to the knowledgeable docents throughout, and really educate yourself about a multitude of antiquated tools, or simply wind your way through and take in the extravagance (and creepiness).

The modern wing of the facility hosts rotating exhibits. The current exhibit, “The Doan Gang: Outlaws of the Revolution” (through December 31, 2026), will appeal to anyone interested in US history. Kids were enjoying the interactive displays as much as the adults.

Don’t miss the Mercer Museum. There is nothing like it in the United States!
The new Doan Gang Exhibit which is included in the admission is excellent. Very informative displays. I think children could also learn here. Hands on displays and exhibits. I personally enjoy the professional design work. First class and modern displays!!!
My husband grew up 1 block from the museum and he enjoyed thinking about old memories. Fortunately, the museum director that chased him off the sledding hill out front isn’t there anymore.
The docents were unobtrusive but extremely informative!!!!!

The Mercer Museum is incredible! My adult son was in town from California and I wanted something "touristy" for us to do that was NOT in Philadelphia. After living near here for almost 30 years, this was our first visit, and it did not disappoint. Mr. Mercer was a collector of pre-industrial tools and designed and built this museum to house his collection. It is six stories tall and displays such things as a grist mill, a gallows, a whaleboat, and a very interesting vampire hunting kit. The museum is full of so many interesting artifacts you could spend days in there and not see everything. The building itself is poured concrete and has many quirky rooms, corners and stairs.

Unusual building, eclectic collection. Mr. Mercer conceived a plan to house his collection of pre-electricity tools, conveyances, household items and paraphernalia in a building he designed and built. To protect the collection from fire, the building is made exclusively of reinforced concrete. Furthermore the items were installed as the building was built, and many of the larger items are hung from ceilings or walls. Small rooms are dedicated to trades such as shoe making, cheese making, sewing, blacksmithing and domestic arts. Larger artifacts include a stage coach, a number of buggies, a whale boat and fishing dory, cider presses, gristmills and fiber prepping machines. It also features examples of the tiles he designed and were made in the factory he owned.

The items on display were very nice but even better was the building and the way the items were laid out. Its amazing someone collected all these items and then built a building to display them!

We visited the Mercer museum on a very cold November day. I mention that because while this is inside, it’s massive and not really heated. I went with my husband and father in law. If you are interested in our countries working history, this is the place to go. Especially interesting if you have an engineering bent. Not for young children as touching is not allowed and there is a lot of reading to understand what you are seeing. We spent a full two hours. It’s also not very accessible if you have mobility issues, and the descriptions are all above a wheelchairs height even if one wanted to do it floor by floor. There is an elevator. We enjoyed ourselves and would recommend it.

We’re from Washington, so we know a lot of museums….but none like this! So much packed into the space, which is itself so interesting. 7 floors of fascinating tools and equipment, everyday household products to commercial items. Mercer was a genius to save all this for future generations. I think I read there are 17,000 items on display. Self guided tour, but incredibly knowledgeable staff member was on hand with observations and details…and extremely nice. Plan a couple of hours to visit, May need a second trip to take it all in
