I was here in February when it was closed, I really wish I could have seen the inside of all the buildings especially the main hose and spring house, lotsa information to read outside and a nice walk around the complex

Don't pay any attention to the posted hours on the website. Sunday hours are posted noon to 4:30 PM. We drove a long way to get here on a Sunday and found it closed with a large sign "Private Event." Apparently if a Harrisburg politician wants to use it on the day you are planning to visit, you are out of luck!

The mansion has beautiful furniture, clothes, pottery and artifacts dating back to the 1700s and 1800s. We felt like we stepped back in time as guests of the homeowners. This made for a much more immersive experience.

Been to Harrisburg many times, but this was our first visit. Beautiful park with excellent views of the Susquehanna. Park is well kept and historical building are in excellent condition. If you enjoy history, take the mansion tour. For $7, it is an hour well spent. Not a destination, but a great stop for a couple of hours. Teens with us enjoyed it too.

It was a rainy day in Harrisburg, so I was looking for indoor places to visit. I saw that Fort Hunter Manion had good reviews, so I headed over. The guide was AMAZING! We toured all over the house. I learned so much! Highly recommended.

Really good and detailed mansion tour that takes around 45 to 50 minutes. Can go into almost all rooms. Majority of furnishings are from period. Lots of history with with hour. Tour guide was very knowledgeable. Not too expensive at $6

The docent who escorted us did a wonderful job! I loved learning about the inner workings of the family in that era. The clothes, the sleep areas, the cooking, the art and design, etc. The mansion was beautiful, however life was still much harder back then!

If you like history, we recommend a tour at this house. Start your tour by watching a short film that your tour builds upon. Our docent was passionate about this home and the history; she easily kept our tour engaged. Like many homes the original structure was built then additions added. You will find the original structure built in 1786 and the front mansion built 1814. There is a third structure built in 1870. The 1902 Rockville Bridge is the longest stone masonry arch railroad ever built. We were fortunate to see a train cross this historic bridge still being utilized today. Be sure to walk around the park to see other structures. Ample parking. No restrooms at manion but facility in park near parking lot.

We've been meaning to check out this mansion and park on previous trips to the area and finally got there. This turned out to be a favorite stop on vacation. We toured the mansion and enjoyed the experience thoroughly. The docents are passionate about their work. Unfortunately, the second floor is not handicap accessible. A docent did sit with me and go through the photos of the second floor. She answered all my questions, and I learned much more about the history of the property and family. Then I imagined I would. The property is well maintained, and there are other buildings you can visit. There is plenty of parking and walking paths along the river. I would suggest you allot two hours. This is a nice spot for a picnic, too. The admission for the tour is very reasonable.

What a wonderful park! A mansion chockful of great antiques and artifacts. A knowledgeable guide who loves the place. Lots of green space to walk and around the various buildings and visual attractions. River views that please the eye. Good for a party or picnic or taking the children to stretch their legs in running around. If you have a wedding: there is a sweet little church and great photo backdrops. This is a versatile space managed by smart people.

Is there a charge to visit the grounds? I know there's a fee to tour the mansion.
Thanks!

What are the tour times, do they have specific start times for the tours?
Skrevet 22. juli 2019
No specific times. There was a tour guide in the building when we arrived. He started us watching a short video and as a few other people came in they became part of our group. Perhaps 8 people total in our group. Tour guide was excellent.

Would my husband be able to use his scooter to get around? Would love to do the tour.
Skrevet 29. mars 2017
Thanks for your interest in Fort Hunter! The scooter will find many level areas outside in the park and the first floor of the Mansion is also accessible. Unfortunately, the second floor is not but your husband would be able to view photos of the second floor to not miss any of the sights. If you do plan to visit, a phone call ahead might make your visit more pleasurable, it will give the staff a chance to ready the spaces for your husband's scooter. 717-599-5751. Thanks and enjoy your visit!

We will be there this Christmas with our dogs. What are some of the attractions we could go to with them?
Skrevet 8. september 2016
EVERYONE ABOVE stated the correct answer. They have an indoor area of a train display & a barn, where activities occur. Not that big of a deal to us. Dogs can roam the huge ground area.
When, we go to our daughter's area in Clearwater & Largo, Fl., @ Christmas, they have a "VERY HUGE LIGHT DISPLAY' ON A HUGE GROUND. You can buy hot chocolate, and many other items>>>cheap from a Charity!
Hershey, on the other hand charges a lot $20 a car to see a few lighting exhibits!
"if" YOU are already in FLA... go to the Clearwater/ Dunedin area or take an "Explosion in the ocean boat cruise" to see the fantastic boat parade on "Fury" in Key West, near Schooner's Wharf bar & grill. Right on the water, two blocks down from Sloppy Joe's!
SORRY, I didn't answer sooner, as we were in FLA on a back to back cruise out of Miami, which is near YOU!
THEN, spent two weeks in Fla. WE are always going to FLA... to get out of PA!
WHEN traveling up North, you guys may want to see the N Y Fingerlakes with TOO many GREAT wineries! Check out on line N Y finger lakes.

In our review we explain many of the aspects of the Fort Hunter Park. For people who like the outdoors, there are places to walk and enjoy nature. If you prefer to visit the mansion, check for the guide schedule and be sure to inquire of the number of people taken on each tour to be sure your group can be accommodated. The cruise on the Pride of the Susquehanna stays close to Harrisburg and so the river as seen at Fort Hunter is farther north and not included in the cruise. The Rockville Bridge is a favorite of railroad buffs and can be viewed a short distance south of Fort Hunter.
