The main temple to the god Fuxi (founder of the Chinese people) is Ming.. and gorgeously carved with signs of longevity and dragons indicating its high status. Ignore the side pavilions- they were thrashed in the cultural revolution. The trees are breathtaking- planted as they were in the time of the Tang!

First of all, I am not sure whether there was a real Fuxin in the history, so I just treat this place as an attraction with old buildings.

The complex itself didn’t express me too much, it is similar to any of other temples in China. But I got lots of fun on the square outside the temple, where you can see the locals enjoy their happy hours.

I am born lucky I reckon. I had a couple of hours to myself on a tour where we were using Tianshui as a means to get to Maiji Shan and not much else. The town certainly did not look prepossessing outside. But I had heard of the Fuxi Temple on tripadvisor and decided to shoot off in a taxi that cost $A1. The taxi dropped me off at the start of a traditional, precinct that had been created around the temple. So I walked down a lovely boulevard to a huge square and was immediately assailed by music from all four corners of the square. Crowds surrounded each of the bands who each had a singer - sometimes amplified. The instruments were erhus - the 2 string Chinese violin.
I was the only non Chinese in the huge square and got quite few looks but only of curiosity because they could see I was appreciating and enjoying their music - strange to my ears as it was. Each of the bands had a singer. And the bands had percussion too.I cannot tell you what a thrill this was for me to experience - out of the blue on a Tuesday evening.
And so to the Ming period temple. Fu Xi is what we would regard as a legendary emperor from the distant past. I am advised he is regarded as the father of the Han Chinese people. It had a 1000 year old tree propped up by the roof. More importantly it had a colourful unicorn in the temple. I rubbed its nose for good luck like everyone else. Later back at dinner I caught up with our new Tibetan Buddhist local guide and he told me unicorns were for fecundity and that young men and women rubbed its nose in order to have lots of children. Oh dear - I think I have quite sufficient of those.
He nor anyone else had any idea what these three statues in the square (photo enclosed) were about. They seem to be peasant farmers from the past celebrating something.

Tianshui town has a pedestrian area pretty large, with a nice and pretty quiet commercial area (restaurants, shops...). At one side of that area, there is Fuxi Temple, staying in front of a big flat square. The temple is pretty old, with interesting carved wooden doors: but the biggest attraction are several centenary trees (600 to 800 years old) really unique,
The environment is very quiet and peaceful, really relaxing

We were lucky enough to have a tour of the Fuxi temple without any other people present, this meant we were really able to understand and feel the peace and tranquility that comes with such a place of ancient history and prominence. A must see if you are in Tianshui, they also have a museum at the back which had a lot of old pottery and was worth a look too.

This place has quite an important significance for a lot of people in China, its one of the oldest and the very first temple to Fuxi. We were lucky enough to have gotten here on a Sunday morning just after 8 am when there were hundred of devoted people celebrating Fuxi with dances, music and a marching caravan of men, women and children of all ages. Observing this scene was one of the highlights of our trip to China as it was quite the cultural experience. The offerings of food, the dishes that were brought to be left at the temple only to rot days later was incredible because of the quality of the food offered and the skills on the food decoration and preparing. If you can manage to get here on a Sunday morning then go ahead and you will see a magnificent display of devoted people and a memory for life.

I am not a believer of Taoism but this temple was a highlight in my Silk Road trip! Our tour guide is a well-read girl and she explained the basic stuff about Yin and Yang. The signs of Bagua (八卦,Eight Diagrams) are actually good advice for our lives: Be patient in wait and be modest at success, and how people should respect nature and stuff. Really made me feel proud of being a Chinese!
If you don't know anything about Yin and Yang, this is a good place to learn. If you are not interested in it at all, go outside to the vast public ground and watch how locals spend their afternoon.
At the corner of the public ground there was an old men selling Guagua (呱呱, a noodle-like snack made of buckwheat). He was so nice and told me a lot of stories, including the legend of Guagua and making process.
