Nice place. The monks were really welcoming and had a nice attitude. You can climb the mountain near the temple to get a better view. Take a ride out to the countryside to see the local farmers who are warm and friendly.

A truly great place to visit. Tickets available across from the Norden Café.

Light of knowledge removes darkness of ignorance

Labrang monastery, Yellow Hat sect, Gelugpa order, Tibetan Buddhism, founded in 1709.
We spent three days in Labrang. Staying at the magnificent Shangu Guesthouse, located across from the White Stupa. We walked the inner (monastery) and outer (mountainous) kora.

Definitely worth the effort to visit, no photos I saw when researching it, do it justice. You can’t take photos inside, except of the yak butter sculptures, which are a lot more impressive than they sound. It is a really interesting place, which you can learn more about on the 40rmb tour. Buy your ticket and then follow the signs to the tour guide/interpreting place at 10:15. A monk will take you inside places you can’t otherwise visit. Also make sure you pay 20rmb to go in the golden temple where you can climb to the roof.

It’s a great place to understand one of the sect of Tibetan Buddhism in Labuleng Si. I was there in August, 2017, I was mostly impressed by the unique style architecture, Lama praying, chanting and the yak butter sculptures. There are several universities in the monastery so it is better to find a guide to get fully understanding. Try to climb the hill in front of the main hall for great views of the overall. Also, do not forget to walk the inner Kora with local people and pilgrims for good karma clockwise. Interesting and mysterious!

Large Buddhist monastery. There are many monks living there, it is very interesting to visit especially during the time when they are chanting. You can also climb a hill in front of the monastery to get a better view on it.

You can reach this amazing site taking a direct bus from Lanzhou South Bus Station (7:30, 8:30, 9:30, 14:00 and 15:00). There, you need to get a tour guide in English to fully enjoy the site: the best on starts at 10:15 from inside the Monastery (buy the tickets at the ticket office and they'll take you there). See our TA profile to access our website and have more info about it and travelling in Gansu!

With my passport proving I was old I got in free. Following the crowd [4 people] you walk about 200 metres to the first temple. There are several temples and buildings you can enter but most of the immense area is residential for the Monks. We were lucky. At just after 1100 we went into the Chanting Temple. The courtyard has a covered area running around it protecting a religious frieze painted on the walls. Slowly following this round I had not noticed 4 monks, sitting on the steps to the inner temple, chanting. Over the next 30 minutes the chanting monks numbered maybe 150. They then filed into the temple where they remained chanting still for another hour or so. 1130 Daily. Tremendous. Next day we returned with a monk guide. Even better.

After visiting Tongren monastery, almost alone and in a quiet and peaceful atmosphere, surrounded by old buildings well renovated and peaceful monks, arriving at Labrang Monastery was a bit of a shock. Queuing, a lot of noise, hundreds or thousands of tourists only taking pictures of themselves, Such an atmosphere somehow put us off. But with time and patience, understanding how to avoid the biggest crowd, we managed to have after all a nice experience visiting the monastery. We did the khora tour Together with the pilgrims. No other tourists.

Lanzhou, Kina
Hi everyone! I'm currently in Lanzhou and I would like to visit the Labrang Monastery, does anybody know how to get to the city from Lanzhou?
Thank you in advance
Skrevet 4. januar 2018
It's very easy, as long as you don't mind long bus rides! The bus really is the only way to get there. Go to the bus terminal, where you can buy tickets (cash only) any time up to departure for the bus to Xiahe. If you have time, you can also go along and buy them in advance and return for the journey. Many of the Lanzhou city buses go to the terminal, but it's not that far from the main city centre. I think (but I don't entirely recall) it's called the South Bus Terminal. The journey is long and isn't entirely comfortable. No toilets on board, but they do make stops. The bus terminal in Xiahe is on the main drag and thus you can usually just walk to one of the many hotels, although in the winter, that won't be much fun. Sorry I don't remember the price of the bus ticket now. I did it in October. However, it's not expensive. You can also take private taxis for (if I recall right) about 200 USD. If you can find people to share, that's not a bad price, although it's not much faster. That's 200USD each way. The bus is way, way, way cheaper. It was FREEZING in Xiahe in October, so I won't even guess how cold it would be there now. Wrap up warm. Have fun!

Don't know. We only visited the monastery mid-afternoon.

Does anyone know how crowded it gets during the New Year/Monlam festival? My friend and I want to go from Xining and we wonder if we should hire a driver/local guide to make things easier (and pass through Rebkong for another Sunning). Thanks anyone!

Should be quite crowded.
For the monastery it should be OK, but it's better to book accommodation in advance

29th September 2016. I am considering a trip next month. Is the monastery still being renovated. Does anyone have any idea how long the renovations will take? thanks
Skrevet 29. september 2016
Hi Joan, when I was there, in Aug, they were mainly renovating the roads. All the buildings were available for tourists. The renovation work was absolutely not a problem. Actually it was part of the experience for me... to see how they do it...who works there... Have to say that I was personally very happy that there was renovation at that time... it gave me an interesting Picture of Tibet, where all the young boys sit and pray ... and those who do the work are... you'll be surprized... enjoy Your trip. I am sure you will love the experience. Kind regards, KAsia
