Driving back from Devizes, stopped off to walk the Wansdyke.
Another interesting walk on the Wansdyke near Calne, on the edge of Morgan's Hill.
Far reaching views to the north and Calne monument.
Well worth the effort.

I was very confused when I came up to Tan Hill. Drove up a road I wasn't allowed on (it was bitumened!) and thought I was looking for barrows.

Walked for 15 minutes and then realised what the hell I was walking on.

The dyke was an amazing piece of work that must have taken a lot of work for no other reason than to demarcate territory and project power.

Views are also great.

Travelling south from Lockeridge, i came across the early medieval defensive linear earthworks of Wansdyke.
Now mainly overgrown, its still possible to explore the earthworks and walk along its course.
Interesting adventure to burn off a few calories before dinner.

This is an excellent 2-3 hr walk starting at the parking near Knap Hill north of Alton Barnes and walking upto and along the Wandsdyke before dropping down to Bishops Cannings a couple of hours later. If having a well earned drink or meal at the end you can park a Car at The Crown beforehand where the back garden on a sunny day overlooking the old church is the stuff of film sets or Sundat night whodunnits. That chap Wan who bulit the dyke along with King Offa who was similarly skilled in motivating unmechanised construction of major and long lasting earthworks could certainly teach modern leaders a thing or two about leadership. And to think that Blair fella though the Millenium Dome worth crowing. Its far more feasible for commanders like Wan and Offa that make the nations youth proud to be British.

Parked north of Devizes and walked east. The path is partially signed but you still need a map. Two stretches either side of the 'A' road are difficult to walk [full of nettles/slippery/full of cows]. Later, it gets better. Excellent views all along though.

We live in All Cannings and love walking over the fields, up the hill and along the Wansdyke. Great views all around over the gorgeous Pewsey Vale. You can park if visiting in the carpark on the road from Alton Barnes towards Marlborough.

I never tire of the Wansdyke. It's a fabulous place to walk. It starts on Morgan's Hill. You can incorporate it into endless walks and never fail to have wonderful views and excellent walking. If you want to walk in Wiltshire with great and interesting places to see, you would find it hard to beat this as a starting place.

Great place to walk and lots of paragliders to watch as well. Superb views all around the beautiful Pewsey Vale. What a construction from long ago. What is not to like?

Wiltshire is a beautiful and unique county to explore on foot- most people visit Avebury and Stonehenge and walk the ridgeway which affords access to some fascinating ancient sites but if you want solitude, beauty, ancient history combined with stunning countryside, great wildlife and some exercise to boot, explore the wansdyke. A good place to start is by parking in Small Grain Plantation car park, off the A361 between Avebury and Devizes. You can walk for miles along the Wansdyke or turn it into a great circular walk which also takes in the hill fort by Cherhill monument. Other sections of the Wansdyke run through the Westwoods near Lockeridge which is an absolute must to visit when the Bluebells are in bloom. Alternatively park in Pewsey Downs car park and visit lesser traversed sections to the north west. Get your boots on!
