Absolutely superb visit. My husband who is a plane enthusiast thought it was informative and was pleased there was a talk from an ex Vulcan pilot.

I am not interested in planes but one of the volunteers chatted to me, allowed me to eat in the cafe and sit outside. Was very kind.

A stunning modern museum in the renovated Fire Station of the old airfield. The experience was brought to life by the enthusiastic volunteers, many of whom had direct connection with the planes they are showing you around.

So a must, is the cockpit tours, where a very few of you experience the interaction, with some who built, or maintained, or if you’re very lucky, flew the aircraft you’re standing in!

All ages will find something to be engrossed by, whatever your preconceptions of an aviation museum are. With interactive displays to try out your skills, on flying, or sub hunting!

The upstairs cafe is excellent, with the coffee not to be missed.

If raining, XM603 makes an excellent umbrella!

This was my first visit to the Avro museum,i attended with the Oldham and District Mini Club, for a photo opportunity with the Vulcan MX603.
We arrived just after 10am,after a quick detour,it's not the easiest place to find, through the new housing estate, but once there we parked with the Vulcan, taking a few pictures, even getting one under the fuselage.
From there we parked in the main carpark, entrance fee is £9 for adults.
Once inside,we had the opportunity to view inside the cockpit of a few of the display fuselage's,£2 per cockpit,i chose the vulcan, but you have a choice of a Lancaster & Nimrod, time slots for this, mine was just after 11am,we were shown in by one of the knowledge volunteers, who explained who sat where & what roles they had during a mission.
From there i took a good look around the many display items, ending up in the cafe with the rest of our group to enjoy a quick cup of tea at a reasonable price £1..
The place was quite quiet, but we were there early, but more arriving as we left.
Overall what a great place to visit, sure i'll be back & would wholly recommend..

A small museum with a comprehensive collection of Avro related exhibits including cockpit replicas of the Lancaster bomber and Nimrod reconnaissance aircraft, engines, and anti-submarine equipment. There are several videos and a virtual reality Lancaster bombing raid experience. A small cafe offers hot and cold drinks and snacks. The staff many of whome are ex Avro emploees are exceptionally friendly and knowledgeable and eager to share their knowledge with visitors.

Excellent museum honouring Avro heritage, lots of amazing exhibits, friendly tour guides, many with experience of having worked with the aircraft on display (well, at least the more modern ones!).

Well worth the very reasonable entry fee, and definitely worth adding on some cockpit experiences for a small extra charge per person. We toured 4 cockpits and spent 5 hours here.

Fabulous modern facilities with a cafe serving pre-made sandwiches, soup and drinks.

Nice, little museum that takes about 2 hours to view.

The exhibits are interesting however some of the interactive displays were a bit dated and need sprucing up if they are to keep youngsters interested.

The staff were all very helpful and knowledgeable and parking was extensive.

I disagree with their policy of charging extras to see things that should be included in the admission price, felt like a bit of a sting to me. Once you've paid to get in that should be it, all exhibits should be viewable for the admission price.

Very interesting visit, only 5 minutes away from home and this was our first visit. We had a 10 year old with us who did get a little bored, paid the extra for the 3 of us to go in 2 of the cockpits. Again really interesting but especially in the Vulcan only 1 of the party got to sit in the pilots seat, the others didn’t get a proper view of it. I appreciate it’s a small space but perhaps they could rethink this. Maybe £2 extra each is a bit much after paying £9 to get in.
As others have said it’s quite small but lots of model planes and lots of information on the Lancaster. Not somewhere you would return to quickly but I wouldn’t stop anyone visiting but would inform them that it’s limited. Loved the Vulcan outside as we had very happy memories of the Air shows there over the years.
Everything comes down to cost these days and perhaps the £30 plus buying a gift for the little one maybe too much for a lot of people.

Not necessarily the easiest place to find. However, nine pounds to get in felt a bit steep considering the size of the place. Staff very friendly, cafe decidedly average. Cockpit tours at two pounds each was the sting. This should have been included in the admission to make entry fee feel value for money. Somewhat disappointed sorry to say.

We visited today 2 adults, girls aged 13 and boy 12. When we got home my son told his dad and said the people working£ there were so enthusiastic and he learnt so much. I agree completely the visit was brought to life by the staff working there. So knowledgeable kind and patient with our preteens. Thankyou for keeping this story alive x

Thoroughly enjoyed my visit here and particularly the personal tour of the Vulcan cockpit. Although not a large museum, there is plenty to occupy your time, from exhibits to information. There was no shortage of volunteers and all were very helpful. Would love to see the complete Vulcan, along with the Nimrod and VC 10 cockpits under cover in the future, as they will surely perish over time if not protected. The coffee shop was also very good and they kindly assured me that they would stay open for me after my personal tour. Well worth a visit and highly recommended.
