Some unusual shops as part of the overall experience. The craft shop had a large selection. The antiques centre like most with multiple traders had lots of cabinets, lots of variety and huge variations in price - personally I get brain freeze after the umpteenth cabinet but great if you want that kind of thing. Will definitely look again if in the area. Hoped to see more of a working / heritage centre - the info displays and film was interesting - I guess weekends are busier and more to do !

On paper the Heritage Centre at Elsecar holds so much promise but the reality, for me anyway, was quite disappointing. The weather didn't help my mood as it always seems to be dreary and miserable when we go and Friday was no exception.
We parked up in the disabled carpark and found ourselves at the foot of the site next to the Pantry tearooms. Time for a coffee we thought and we went in. A gentleman was already being served in front of me having asked for, I presume, two soya milk coffees. Unfortunately they only had enough soya milk for one so he opted for an Americano for himself sans milk.
When my turn came I ordered two flat whites and I have to say they were a delight. Full of flavour and not too big. Just right.
We then went for a wander around the site first stopping off at the large antiques centre adorned with old enamel signs on the outside and with a number of potted plants for sale out the front. I use the term antiques centre judiciously as it is aimed more at vintage and bric-a-brac rather than true antiques. If you're fond of a Lurpak ceramic toast rack then you'll be fine. I'm sure there are a few rubies in the dust but they didn't jump out at me as we negotiated the two floors of this expansive building.
Next on the agenda was the Heritage Furniture store set in an old and very long building adjacent to the antiques centre. This was mainly filled with contemporary furniture and decorative objects and paintings. There was a rather dubious looking original portrait of Aiden Turner as Poldark hanging on the wall which caught my eye if only for the wrong reasons. For one thing I mistook him for the magician David Copperfield! I counted at least two dark blue placards placed in different parts of the building depicting a prancing bull with the legend "B******t Corner". To each their own but not my style I'm afraid.
In another building are some small artisan outlets: one a gothic stroke vampire tee-shirt stockist and in another a small clock repairers. Further on is a large craft shop seemingly specialising in carding, felting, crochet and decoupage which my wife spent some time looking around.
In another corner of the site, opposite the Pantry, is a stained-glass artist's shop. This, on other occasions, has been a delight for me to look around being interested in that sort of thing, but I was disappointed this time. As you enter you are hit by the smell of incense coming from the stand adjacent to the door and the rest of the place seems to be chocker with crystals and mood stones and suchlike with very little in the way of glasswork on show. Disappointing.
There are a number of other businesses operating out of the heritage centre, such as a printers and an auction house, but I get the feeling that so much more could be done with the site to make it more appealing to visitors and holidaymakers.
I'm afraid it'll be some time before I return again. At least the coffee was good!

Not really a great deal to see mid week.
We called in on a Thursday afternoon, and other than a few craft shops and antiques Hall there was nothing else to see.
It's nice how the centre is largely untouched from the victoriana era/layout, but don't expect to be overly entertained.
It's better to visit when events are taking place.

Elsecar is a great day out.
Go when there is a craft fair to see 90 stalls in the big hall. There are 2 tearooms, a craft beer bar, lots of shops, art centre, antiques & a fabulous furniture showroom full of rustic wood & hand painted items. Plus a heritage trail & lots of local history.

Some great quirky shops here, sadly most closed as we went late and they had an event on. We will visit the area again though.

Interesting place to look round for a few hours. Lovely little shops and walks to do in the surrounding area. Different things on through out the year, we came to a craft market which was nice but very busy.

We visit here often. My niece loves the antique centre when she comes to visit. Today I was on my own, doing a few geocaches in the area, and an adventure trail around the site. There is a lot to see, lots of interpretation panels for those who are interested, several shops, two cafes and a soft play centre. Its what you make of it, but pity the railway had to close, but lots to learn.

Went for a trip out with the missus earlier, booked a tour. We were the only ones on the tour, but the tour guide still gave 110%. He was very helpful and knowledgeable.
We went to the antiques shop after, this was pretty cool, found a few suitcases (I can kick the missus out now, lol) and a few other cool things there.
Would recommend to others for a day trip!

This visit will be what you make it. There are loads of thing to see, and the Guided Tour is very good. The car parking is free, and there is no admission charge. Lots of historic buildings in and around the site. Events are often held; an antiques fair when I went. Reading some of these reviews, the people who were bored must be boring people.

Is the Heritage Centre dog friendly? We want to visit Suppa Club event tomorrow and would like to bring our well behaved little dog with us.

Yes Elsecar is very dog friendly. There's even a café that lets dogs in with well behaved humans. Just over the road is a big park and lake to walk around.

Myself and partner visited today 26/3/17,,we had a beautiful 3 hours there exploring all the sights and shops,,would highly reccomend,,but we was very dissapointed with the disabled parking there,i have severe walking disability,we drove round the main car park and noticed only a handful of disabled parking 5-6 cars at most,so we had to park where we could,,on returning to car found someone had parked really close making it a struggle to open my door and get in comfortably,,where as disabled bays are wider and easier to get in and out,,would benefit disabled people much more if there were more spaces allocated,,regards John.
