We had visited Wheal Martyn in November 2019 and decided to go again in the spring as we enjoyed the place very much. Today was brilliant! We went on the free tour at eleven o’clock with Steve who had worked in the china clay industry and really knew his stuff. I learned so much more than I had by just walking around on my own. A great way to spend a couple of hours. Thanks Steve.

This was our first visit and we look forward to going back. Reception were so helpful. I use a small mobility scooter and we were shown a map and the terrain outside explained. So, armed with our map, we set off. The first indoor exhibition was so interesting and we loved the first information board. It suddenly came to life with the history of the man who began the china clay process. Just stand in front of the picture frame and he will tell you his story.
There is so much history to china clay and I was fascinated. It’s a wonderful exhibition. We went onto the next indoor exhibition and my scooter happily coped with the path to that area. It was equally as interesting and for people with mobility problems there is a plateau lift to the first floor.
Afterwards we had tea and lovely cake in the cafe . Very good. The shop is full of interesting and very tempting goodies.

Lovely trip back in time to learn about the history of Cornwalls Clay Mining. Good exhibits and lovely walks. Climb to the pit view is well worth it. Very friendly staff and lovely tea room.

We visited Wheal Martyn with our two children, aged four and one, whilst visiting the area. We had a fantastic day here, there was so much to see and do and it was very interactive for the children. We all found the exhibits very interesting and well laid out. The trails and play/picnic area were wonderful and very easy access, even with a buggy. We will definitely be back next time we are in the area!!

Visited on a rainy day in the Easter holidays. It was nice and quiet (I'm guessing because of the rain) so when we got to the top of the viewing platform we had it all to ourselves! Very interesting, with lots of information/displays to read with friendly staff and a spacious cafe in which we enjoyed a delicious cream tea. Ticket lasts all year too, so could come back for multiple visits. We also enjoyed spotting the teddy bear trail, for which my son recieved a small prize for.

what a find, chanced a quick visit, fascinating place, so much history and information, lots to see , the video clips were very good, surprised there weren’t more visitors. The cafe was very good, offering a great choice of food and a POT of tea with lovely china cups & saucers, very good value.

Headed to the museum in the way back from short stay in Cornwall. Set into hillside it’s a good walk to the top to view the nearby working mine. Well laid out and informative throughout - nice cafe a shop. A good couple of hours for the whole family.

I like industrial archeology. I like to relive the glory days when Britain actually produced something, when we led the world and used our ingenuity to triumph over nature. Big stories can be told and fascinating insights can be given into working conditions and ways of life that disappeared a long time ago.

Unfortunately, Wheal Martyn missed the mark for me.

It felt like an attraction that needed a big lottery grant to help it to curate and explain the remnants of its past and bring the dusty, rusty and broken back to life and relevance for a modern audience. My guess is that the information panels had not been significantly updated for over 20 years as the whole site felt like it was ticking over on idle, leaving the visitor to use more imagination than could reasonably be expected to take away more than the memory of a somewhat forlorn former industrial landscape.

Wheal Martyn has undoubtedly got huge potential but more urgently needs to be done to make it fit for the 3rd decade of the 21st century.

This brilliant attraction was one of the highlights of our stay in Cornwall.
Although it was a showery morning we made use of the excellent cafe for coffee and cake. The cherry and almond cake homemade by Paula was the best cake my partner has had for some time.
We then set off to explore the outside exhibits, and the extensive grounds including the view from the hilltop into the nearby active clay pit. There is plenty of information to explain how the clay was extracted and processed.
We returned to the cafe for a cup of tea, and then had a good look around the inside exhibits which are located in former clay dries. The amount of information about the history of the clay industry, and the uses for china clay is very impressive.
Finally we looked around the shop, which includes a decent selection of books dedicated to the clay industry and industrial archaeology in general.
I already knew a basic amount about the clay industry, but Wheal Martyn explained much more. The ticket allows us to return for free during this season, and there is definitely enough interest for me to come back and explore some more.
A visit to Wheal Martyn will help explain some of the Cornish landscape, it will also put the Eden Project into context, the ports of Charlestown, Pentewan, Par, and Fowey all partly owe their existence to the export of china clay.

Wheal Martyn is a very interesting museum on the history of clay mining. It is mainly an outdoor museum but there are also some indoor exhibits. There is plenty to see here and you could easily spend half a day here. You follow a trail around the site including a short uphill walk to where you get great views over the mine, some of which is still operating today. There is a cafe with plenty of choice of good quality food. The staff are very friendly. There is plenty of parking on site. Your ticket entitles you to entry for a year.
