Walked from Charlotte’s Pass.
Did the loop - main ridge on way out (12.8km) and summit track (9.3km) on way back.
Total of 22.8km including walking to and from the car.
4hrs 40mins in total.
4hrs 13mins moving
It’s an easy and very beautiful walk.
The circuit is a great option - the main ridge track is very beautiful. Much more isolated and a great way to approach.
The “summit” … is almost not worth going to. It’s the definition of bored kids in the back asking are we there yet as the trail loops unnecessarily around for 1km. The top is flat and covered with people. People you have not seen if you did the main ridge walk.
Anyway - it’s the top of Aus … so you have to go up and take a pic on top of the trig point.
We took the summit track back. It’s a road. Initially very disappointing it is ok towards the end. If you just did this as a loop it would be horrible … but for the return leg it gets you back to the car very quickly and without much effort.
All in all … great day out … would highly recommend.

Overall, it’s a good comfortable walk on a prepared trail. Don’t take tracking poles with you if you don’t want to carry them in hands the whole way (on other routes they will be more in use). There are one stop with restrooms (btw the highest one in Australia:)) on the route. The restaurant (near the lift station) works until 3pm.
They say it takes 4-6h, but it really depends on weather and your physical conditions. For example, we did round-trip in Summer less than 3h.

The winter landscape at Mt Kosciuszko is just stunning. Like most winter-time visitors, we come here to ski. Whilst it can be hit and miss with the snow cover, the landscape is always beautiful. One of the most striking features are the snow gums. They always catch my eye. They are so distinctively Australian. When you’re skiing among the snow gums, you couldn’t be anywhere else in the world but Australia.
These huge, heavy trunked, ancient trees are real survivors in the harsh alpine conditions. The most striking ones have rainbow coloured bark. It’s hard to imagine that the shades of yellow, rusty-red and orange, creamy-white, green and silvery-grey patterning is not painted on.
We are curious to know what caused this. It seems that the gum sheds its bark at different stages and the exposed strips change colour over time so that at any given time you might have several different shades of colour on the one trunk. It’s quite unique.
NOTE: To enter the Kościuszko National Park you either need to have a National Parks pass or pay the daily car fee. A day pass this year was $29 (a year pass was $190 but includes all NSW national parks). The good bit is that you pay per car, not per person, so a family in the one car only pays one fee.

The park is in need of repairs seen so much that needed work and the chair lift was so expensive and not for the faint hearted or someone who needs help off as it is everyone for themselves in fact I was told to hurry up and yelled at to walk as they needed to get there next victim on the lift , for $59 a person what a rip off for a 15 min ride over dirt and rocks , I will not be coming back and not recommend to my friends in the US or anywhere the toilets where dirty and not cleaned for a while , cost was too much .

During winter, like most visitors to the Mt Kosciuszko National Park, we come here for the skiing resorts.
During summer, it’s off the beaten track for most tourists but, for those who like to explore beyond the main sights, this is a stunning area.
The park covers 6,000 square kilometres of rugged Australian alpine landscape.
It is a very scenic but often stark environment which includes snow gum forests, limestone caves, mountains, gorges, the Snowy River and alpine lakes. Mt Kosciuszko itself is Australia’s highest peak, at 2,228 metres.
We recently had a day here in summer and did a little bushwalking which was incredibly beautiful. The large granite tor formations that rise abruptly from the surrounding grassy slopes are really striking and the snow gums are so distinctively Australian. Conditioned to seeing the area in winter and covered in snow, it was a whole new experience to see the national park in summer.

It’s what draws me to Thredbo regularly during summer. Chairlifts are getting more expensive for 55 2 way for adults. Eagles nest is a nice stop for refreshments and view. The walk to the summit can be challenging depending on weather conditions. Hat, sunscreen, water , warm clothes and hood walking shoes are essentials. Cotton tops are good , even a T-shirt is good as it can get hot during the walk or quite cold. Check the mountain weather conditions before ascending to see what you are in for. Lifts stop at 4.15pm and start 9.

We were driving through and having spent a couple of days here a year ago, this time we only had 3 hours to spare. So we grabbed the scenic pass and just went up and down the chairlifts and cable cars, had morning tea at the cafe at the top of the 'Mount Kosciuszko' chairlifts where we walked to a snow field left over from the winter and enjoyed breath-taking views. Went on the 'toboggan' ride and basically had a really fun time on a day we drove over 600km so it was a nice break from the car. Staff running the resort facilities for the mountain bikers were great - friendly and helpful.

The summit walk from Charlotte's Pass is a must do for those who would like that extra time up the top rather than going up via the chair lifts at Thredbo.
It was a good 2 hour walk each way for my family and we stayed at the summit for about an hour to enjoy the view and have an early lunch.
The walk is well maintained and there are workers on duty during our walk so you are never alone.
Seamans hut was a good stop where there is a memorial for those who have lost their lives near the area.
You can also opt to ride your bike up to the toilets up at Rawsons pass.
We started early so it was a pleasant walk up the summit but it did get evey hot in the afternoon coming down. Recommend sun protection during the summer months and wear light coloured clothing as the flies are relentless along the walk. They certainly love to keep you company.
The views around the area were beautiful and wildflowers were blooming. It was a memorable walk and recommend to everyone to try at least once.

We had the perfect weather for our 3.5 hour walk to Mt Kosci and back via the Chairlift. If I had more time and a lot more fitness, I would like to walk from the base rather than take the chairlift one day but that's definitely an all day trek and only for the fittest.

Mount Kosciuszko - the highest peak in the land part of Australia, sometimes given as the highest peak in Australia and Oceania, although in the classification of this part of the world it is outside the top ten. It is located in New South Wales, in the Kosciuszko National Park, in the Snowy Mountains in the band of the Australian Alps.
Track to the mountains is not very difficult but all track is 6 hour, 4 hours up, 2 go down. Be careful with the snow next to the peak and wear good shoes.
The view is amazing there

Hi everyone, I am considering completing the main range loop as an overnight bushwalk with a friend in late May. We have tackled alot here in QLD, but haven't done anything considered Alpine are quite unfamiliar with the park. I'm in the process of preparing and getting all the information needed to have a good safe time and I was wondering what snowfall looks like at the tailend of May. Some websites advise there is little to no snowfall and other websites state that there will be significant snow fall that may require snowshoes. I understand conditions can change quickly so I was hoping to know what I can expect during this time period?
Skrevet 18. april 2022
Trying to predict snow cover a month or so out is really guess work. Snow season only gets going mid June. Our snow falls are quite fickle and May is not known for lots of snow.
Like anytime in alpine areas you need to be prepared for extremes as you will be. Snow shoes though? You will get a better idea a week or a few days prior.

HI i am hoping to see the summit of Mount Kosciuszko for the first time this december. I am going with my husbankd and 3 young teenage children. i was thinking of taking the chairlift up from Thredbo and walking back via the summit walk to see the best of both tracks. is this worth doing? Mid December how warm will it be, not sure how to dress for this trek?
I know the Main Ridge Track is for experienced hikers which we are not is there another way to see the blue lake?
Also torn between doing the walk or hiring a bike and mountain biking up, maybe with a tour, any advice on the best option? we are only up for a weekend so dont have time to do both.
Skrevet 16. november 2019
Our family of 6 took the chairlift up and back. With regular stops for photos, snow play, views etc this took around 5 hours to walk the remainder return. This was long enough for us. Alpine weather can be unpredictable. We went early December and were in shorts / shirts. A week earlier there was snow falling at Thredbo. The Summit is achievable but I'd be careful to over-extend. Probably depend on age of your children. Ours were between 7 and 12 years.

Hi, We are staying in Jindabyne on the 24 and 25 May 2019. What is the best way to hike Mount Kosciusko, ie where is the starting point and how to get there? We have a car.
Skrevet 29. april 2019
Check the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service website for the different hiking routes to Mt Kosciusko. They vary in distance and difficulty but are generally suitable to most walkers. Very important you wear full length warm wind proof clothing, headwear and sunglasses. Water and a good meal before you go are essential. Toilet available before final climb to summit.

I checked with my daughter who works on the Thredbo chairlifts & she said if the person is mobile, staff can load them on & off the chairlift & send the wheelchair up behind them on the next chair.

Planning to walk to the summit Australia Day weekend on the Sunday. What is the weather like at this time of year? What is the recommend clothing? Shorts ok with a jumper ?
Thanks for your help
Skrevet 22. januar 2019
As someone said, the weather can be unpredictable. Always look at the weather report before setting off. If need be check in with the Visitors Centre in Jindabyne. Being the mountains it can be scorching burning hot one day and freezing cold the next - even in summer. Don't underestimate the mountains here. A Canadian got himself lost for good in May, caught out in the weather, never to be found again.
Normally I wear a hat, sunglasses, long sleeved shirt for sun protection, shorts or long pants for sun protection, and lightweight hiking shoes (it's all track to Mt K). In my daypack I pack in sunscream, lipbalm, an outer jacket, a fleece and lots of water, and insect repellant for the pesky march flies. Snacks and food of course.

I'm coming up with my husband for my 70th birthday. I've had a knee replacement but both are still fairly fit. How hard and long are the walks in your beautiful area?
Skrevet 22. oktober 2018
Hello moruya48, there is such a mix of trails around Thredbo, low level walks that are not too strenuous to steeper more demanding hikes. The hike to Mt Kosciuszko is 13km round trip, with uphill and downhill sections, nothing too steep just long steady climbs. The Thredbo website has a walks map so you can check out walks, level of difficultly and lengths, so then you can work out what would work for you both.

Hi! Is it possible to summit both Mt Kosciuszko and Mt Townsend in one day from Thredbo? I saw that the chairlift only operates 8.30am - 4.30pm, so I'm wondering whether that's enough time to do both mountains or not? (NB: We are experienced, fit hikers). Thank you!
Skrevet 25. september 2018
Hi pkf32, it really does depend on your fitness level, it is approximately 25k's at altitude, definitely can be done, just remember that Mt Townsend is not as clearly defined as the Mt Kozzie trail, so make sure you get solid directions before you leave. The tip is to keep an eye out for the stack of rocks cairns - you need to follow these off the Main Range Track to Townsend. It is a terrific walk, with a scramble over rocks at the top, the views are worth it. Enjoy your walk
Skrevet 5. november 2018
Is there any place I can buy a 'I climbed Mt Kosciuszko' certificate? Or do I have to do a guided tour to get one?
Skrevet 18. september 2018
Hi Samantha, Thredbo Sports located at the base of the chairlift sells them for those who self guide.
Skrevet 19. september 2018
Are there any forums or platforms where one can discuss the Mt Kosciuszko summit walk? Where I could perhaps find a group to join for the walk given the fact that we are aiming to do it on the 29th/30th September 2018. Any advice?
Skrevet 16. august 2018
Hi Woodychen, the dates you are planning to visit will see the Kosciuszko Track snow covered. The walking season from Thredbo kicks off November 17th. If you are still wanting to go in September you will need snow shoes or cross country skis/snowboard. Thredbo offer backcountry tours if you are wanting to go with a group. Check out backcountry adventures on the Thredbo website. Enjoy..

Snowy Region Visitor Centre, in Jindabyne, is a great place for visitors to get information, brochures, maps and park entry passes before heading into Kosciuszko National Park.
