We've visited museums of contemporary art in northwest Massachusetts (Mass MOCA), in Amsterdam (MOCA), in Boston, at DIA Beacon, New York and in other places. For those who reviewed the Mattress Factory negatively, you have to understand that the purpose of the Factory and many other contemporary art museums is to offer a space for artists to explore big projects. We LOVED the Yayoi Kusama rooms -- would have gone to the Mattress Factory just for those two installations. The Garden is a beautiful thing, as is Handrail, as is the Sarah Oppenheimer piece. Other pieces, not so much. But that happens in every museum that you visit. Accept and enjoy what touches you; don't complain about what touches the emotions or intellect of someone else. It's art. You get to decide. But the truth certainly is that at the Mattress Factory, the options are tremendously wide. Great museum.

Wow. Believe the one star reviews. The decrepit outdated “art” left my mouth open in a BAD way. The fact that this place is pulling in 22$ a person; takes about 20 mins to see after navigating the map and one whole exhibit is a collapsing house, says enough. I could not be anymore dissatisfied, I bought a sticker and kept my pin so I could always remember and tell people about the time I visited she worst art installation on the east coast.

LOVED this!!! Not sure why so many people leave negative reviews here - but I understand art is subjective! This isn’t your “norm” art gallery. This isn’t really paintings hanging on the walls type of place. It’s thought provoking, sensory inducing & just wild spaces from creative people! I honestly wish there were MORE art galleries like this. We left all expectations at the door & walked in to just ENJOY & EMBRACE it all. The ticket price was well worth it considering there are 3 - yes 3 - buildings to go thru! So do not miss the other two buildings which are a quick walk down the road. Really interesting pieces, creative spaces & funky stuff to see. Loved the gift shop which had lots of local artisans selling goods. This place is a breath of fresh air. A place to just come, explore & be in a creative, judgement free space!

I only went for the Kusama exhibits. I like the idea behind the museum, and the staff were nice, but I was happy paying the $20 just to see the two Kusama exhibits. I went right when they opened and had them to myself.

I just didn't like this and I usually like installation art. It just wasn't well executed, by and large. The room with dots was fun but the rest was too dark, or just not well done (the fudge kitchen). Admission is a whopping $20 per head for a place that's rather small. Go to the Frick or Carnegie.

Unless you are 100% woke, do not visit this museum. It starts in a literal hoarder house where you climb through piles of trash, and ends in a dark room where you can not see a thing. I want my money back. The current rating on Trip Adviser is deceivingly high. Skip this place unless you’re an art major or just high.

This is a very interesting exhibition center for installation art. The installations occupy in general a whole room in the large building and allow the visitor to engage closely by walking through the art installations. The concept is great and I haven't seen anything like it before. A whole floor is given to the intriguing light installations of James Turrell and the Yayoi Kusama rooms would have long waiting times in the few lare museums where she exhibited similar work. Here it is an intimate and fascinating encounter with her work! Having mentioned the two artists the other installations are also wonderful examples of what art can be (other than the good old painting on the wall). Please go when you have an hour to spare. It is worth it!

This was my teen and I's favorite stop during our weekend in Pittsburgh. If you have any interest in modern art, it's well worth your time. There are three separate buildings and each one is very distinct. One entire building is given over to the exhibit "A Second Home" by Denis Maher. We were the only ones there during our visit and it could be quite creepy at times, but it was also incredible. Some of the other exhibits did have nudity in case you are concerned about that. Since my favorite book is Beloved by Toni Morrison, my favorite exhibit was "I Come from a Holy Place" by Bekezela Mguni. Many of the exhibits are interactive and we ended up spending much more time here than we had planned on. I would love to return sometime.

This is a very unusual museum. The work is all contemporary and is mostly installations of varying mediums, including videos, audio, sculpture, various two dimensional art, and light. I suggest going in with an open mind and knowing that it is not like a typical art museum with traditional art. Definitely check out the James Turrell exhibits and do not be scared because it is in the dark! Nothing jumps out at you. The Kusama rooms were interesting, too. I loved the black women as goddesses exhibit, the video on the New Chelyuskites, and the "house within a house" that took up an entire building. Be sure you see all three buildings the museum encompasses.
The people saying the building was old and "creepy," well, it is older and it was an actual mattress factory. I personally thought that added to the experience. It doesn't have a "haunted" or negative feel at all; it's just a building with a unique history.
Finally, to the person docking a star for the Mattress Factory daring to show "political art," one of the purposes of art is to make a statement. I admire this museum's dedication to not being afraid to show art that reflects the current state of our world.

There seem to be multiple floors in each building. Are there elevators or must you climb stairs?

You can do it in less if you fly through, but to see and enjoy everything I'd recommend 2-3 hours. Most of that will be in the main building.
