This is a pretty estate with some nice trees and a large pond but not much else going on. From the description of the place I wasn't expecting formal gardens or anything like that. However, I was expecting some smaller, wildflower or native plant gardens and some wild areas with native plants sprinkled in. What they had was a couple badly tended, overgrown garden areas. The Children's Garden looked like it hadn't been taken care of in a long time. It did have some nice trees, but none of them had little plaques telling you what they were or how old they were or any information.

A map is essential for finding your way around this place because the paths aren't well marked, they disappear and re-appear in a few places, and it can be confusing trying to figure out where to go. (There aren't always paths and there are a lot of instances where you have to walk through grass. So if you go be sure to remember your bug spray.) By the visitors parking lot past the picnic pavilion there is a large sign with a map and smaller maps you can take. Due to the amount of walking and a few pathways that present tripping hazards it's not a good place to visit for the elderly or people with mobility issues.

Granted we didn't come here on the best day. (That is, a hot day toward the end of August.) I'm sure it's a little prettier in the Spring when the azalea plants and some other plants are in bloom. But in general, I would say if you're local and just want an outdoorsy place to walk/be in nature it's ok. However, it's just not worth a long drive if you are coming from NJ or farther in PA.

I wish I could say something good as a visitor, but I can't. Getting to the house (which was not open to tour!!) was through a wet uneven grassy field with screaming day campers weaving in around us. It was terrible! My aunt is 86 and the uneven terrain was dangerous. We finally got to a gravel path near the house which was much better. The gardens, if you can call them that, were the utmost of disappointment and I love flowers and can find good stuff everywhere! So very sad. There is a lovely pond waaaaaaay down a steep and long slope, not anything we could traverse - never saw a pathway down. The pond was pretty from a distance. We did get a map of sorts, not very realistic. Gardens were differentiated by the fact that they weren't mowed as far as I could tell. Some garden areas around the house were better. Back to the car through wildly jumping and running loud children, wet uneven grass, and thankfully our car. I was so very disappointed. No fee to tour, donation requested somewhere.

My wife and I enjoyed the Pinetum. Glad we got to it at the end of our walk because otherwise this review would have been 2 stars. Great in concept. Lovely land. However upkeep was less than par. Many weeds. Paths were mostly long grass which brought on bugs.

This place allows dogs on the trails. YAY! Unfortunately we went on a very hot day, it was over 90 degrees. So we didn't spend nearly as long there as we had planned. It looked enticing with lots of large trees and a good size pond.

Be warned, however, to bring your own supplies including water. There is no gift shop or cafe -- no place to buy a beverage. The 'facilites' consist of some very clean port-a-potties and a large covered picnic area.

It is free admission, free parking, and a nice brochure. I hope to return, with my dogs, on a cooler day.

Very easy to find; I plugged the address on the website into the GPS and the GPS took me right to the place. There is a nice large sign that says Welkinweir Visitor Parking. There is a green gate. I did not see a place to give donations.

There is a very nice picnic pavilion right in front of the parking lot. It does not have trash cans; it is a bring it in, bring it out facility. They also have a policy of only eating in the pavilion.

Dogs are welcome, with a few policies associated with that as well (discourage barking, pick up after them when they poo, etc.).

I found it hard to find the trails off the parking lot. Once we were nearer to the water I saw some semblance of trails. They are not typical warn down trails, they are more of a "this grass is shorter than the other grass" trail.

The water is not for participating with (swimming, fishing, etc.); it is only for enjoying with your eyes.

There are very nice upscale port a potties. And there was a sink nearby, but we did not test it out.

We went in the spring and the azaleas and all other trees were flowering and it was just gorgeous! Purple, pink, white, dark pink, light purple - breathtaking.

And from the picnic pavilion you had a serene glimpse of the pond. On our trip around the pond we saw a frog and a black/grey snake. Thankfully the snake slithered away because I did not see it in the thick grass and I would have totally stepped on it.

I saw a lot of shiny leaves near the water. Be on the look out for poison ivy.

We went on a Tuesday from 11-1 and we were the only people on property (except the workers).

Overall, this place is gorgeous and well worth a visit. The grounds a kept very well. The picnic pavilion was very clean.

We will be back!

It was a nice day to spend in nature. Most of the plantings are indigenous to the area. Walking paths lead through the 197 acres of natural beauty. We plan on going back in the spring to see the azaleas and rhododendron in bloom.

We visited on a drizzly morning. The grounds are lovely, but unkempt. The most interesting was the Pinetum. The estate house is closed except for prearranged tours of ten or more. That was disappointing.

A beautiful estate, lovely rolling hills, pond and beautiful home that can be rented for private affairs. Become a member of the Green Valleys Association and receive many benefits and also help with a local watershed group. Weekly summer camps are held for kids and in the spring and fall camps are held for preschoolers.

Love going here for a lovely walk around the pond or up into the woods. The trees here are unusual and the wildlife around the pond is always surprising. You can also rent the historic house for events and send your children for a great summer camp experience.
