We stopped through to hike the trail to Chess Cemetery. The drive to the park was beautiful. Trailhead was pretty easy to find and there was parking. The hike was much more uphill than we had planned for, but everyone was happy we took the time out of our day.

There is not much to do here. The lake was drained due to Consol Energy ruining the dam. Fracking is all over the place in this section of the state. A fracking site is close to the pool location. The pool also was closed in late June. The campground also was not my favorite by any means. The sites lacked privacy and were very close without trees. I'm used to Prince Gallitzin camping where the sites are private and wooded. We also were staying next to a large family that had multiple cabins. The one-man was openly carrying his pistol. It seemed weird in a family campground to be openly carrying a deadly weapon with the family that had multiple babies and toddlers. I didn't understand what the perceived threat was. Maybe if he saw a racoon he could pull out his gun and go Pew Pew and save us all at the campground.

Beautiful campground and trails and super helpful staff. Any question we asked was either immediately answered, or they got back to us within an hour. While some stuff is unavailable right now, after seeing the latest improvements, I'm sure it will be worth the wait.

Facilities should be functional. Laundry was out of order, 2/3 of hiking trails were closed off. Swimming pool was not open and we were told it won't likely be open till the end of the season or 2022. The lake has been drained so no fishing either. There is no Verizon signal here. So you do have to leave the campground to check email or get the weather. We will most likely not return to camp here again.
Fracking? About 2-3 miles from campsites. Fracking facility looks to be right beside the stream and pool area. Struck us as odd to see drilling in state park area.
Pros: Clean working bathhouse. Full RV hookups. Quiet and small.

... but nothing really special. Not really many facilities; all I saw were some picnic areas and a restroom facility. There are some nice hiking trails, and I did catch sight of a couple deer. I hiked the Iron Bridge trail but that was closed to cross. I got some good exercise here and best of all there was nobody else around getting too close, but I really see no reason to come here again. It's located in a real out of the way corner of southwestern Pennsylvania.

Ryerson is a beautiful park in southwestern PA with a rich history. It has a free swimming pool & a very nice campgrounds. The dam was damaged by coal mining which lead to the draining of the lake, but there is still fishing in the area.

Today was our first trip to Ryerson Station State Park. We were not particularly impressed. The lake has been drained and there is apparently not enough funding to fill it again. Since it was the winter, there was not much activity. The roads in and out and very curvy and not the easiest to drive. We did take a nice hike up a rather steep hill to Chess Cemetery, which has some old grave sites dating to the early 1800's. We are not planning a return trip.
