A great tour of Colonial home with amazing collection of Colonial furniture. Amazing to walk the same house where Washington stayed for a week.

We walked by The Heyward-Washington House as we were on our historical walking tour. Our tour guide, Linda, really recommended that we if we only visit one home that we should visit this house. After our walking tour was over, we came right over. It is an 18th century house with the original kitchen, carriage house, slave quarters and courtyard. It was very sobering to hear all of the information on our audio tape. I have to agree with other visitors that there was an overload of information about the antique furnture. I did enjoy the visit.

Our visit began with having to read lots of tacky signage plastered all over the door to find how to get in. When we finally find that the doorbell no longer works and we use the doorknocker, it is opened by someone who was irritated that she had to open the door for us! We were brusquely directed where to go next, and the girl taking our money (receipt said Grace) was no more welcoming than the initial contact. No southern hospitality here!
From reading previous reviews, apparently this site used to have good docents who gave the tours. Now it is a politically-correct prerecorded tour that STARTS OUTSIDE?!?!? If you came to learn about the Heyward's, there is very little information dedicated to them. If you didn't already know that he was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, you might leave not knowing because very little emphasis is placed on his significance in history. And George Washington walked these very floors, but again, the recorded tour does not play that up either. The name Hayward-Washington is deceiving because very little attention is given to the family in the recorded tour. As amateur history buffs, we were very disappointed in its content!
The only bright spot of the tour (other than getting to walk where history-makers walked and lived!) was Rosemary (I think I have her name right), a very pleasant volunteer who was upstairs if you had any questions. I'm guessing maybe she was one of the friendly, knowledgeable docents that was mentioned in the older reviews. She made certain she took time with every guest as they came up the stairs and was a delightful, intelligent lady who seemed genuinely happy to be there and appreciative of the guests.

We enjoyed this tour. Like the other reviewer, it would have been nice to learn more about the family instead of the furniture. Do not miss the garden and enslaved quarters and be sure to press the optional buttons to learn more. We forgot to ask about the peg where George Washington was said to have hung his coat. We were glad we visited this home before the Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon as Thomas Heyward was imprisoned in the dudgeon.

I love historic house tours but the audio guide focused so much on the furniture and less on stories of people living in the house. (How many times must we hear what a chest on chest on chest furniture piece is.)
The woman working there was extremely unfriendly… the sign said pull on the knob out front so we did and she seemed super annoyed to open the door to let us in.
It’s cool that George Washington had tea here, and I like seeing the rooms restored to how they looked at the time, but we enjoyed the Rhett Aiken house 100x more.

I often get bored with audio tours but found this one to be quite interesting. The house was filled with interesting pieces of the era which were all well explained. I especially enjoyed the sound effects that accompanied the audio explanations to make you feel like you were actually there (clinking dishes during the dining room audio, background conversations in the salons). I found the slave quarters to be both informative and troubling, as they should be. The young lady who sold the tickets was warm and welcoming. If you are interested in Charleston history, this is a stop you should make.

This is a good site to visit while in Charleston as, in particular, it provides a rich context for local history. The audio tour is very informative; be sure to press buttons A and B when prompted, as the additional information enhances the learning experience without becoming tedious.
Rather than just purchase a ticket for this house, we opted for the $25 combination ticket, which not only provide admission to Heyward Washington, but also provides access to the Joseph Manigault House and the Charleston Museum (across the street from each other). All three warrant a visit and provide worthy looks at history.

More history of the occupants who owned the property and their extraordinary roles and adventures in shaping the country from the early1700s through the Reconstruction period. The tour leaves out the family's much documented actions and correspondence with the many people and events of those times that shaped the US. The tours overall theme is one of the evils of slavery, which could occupy 15% of the information in stead of about 85%, greatly distracting from and deemphasizing the contributions of those former owners.

Enjoyed the tour- it is a handheld audio device tours so you can go at your own pace. The grounds in back are pretty. George Washington stayed here for a visit. Cost was $12 for adults. Took about 45 minutes for the tour.

We visited two homes on the tour and this one is an audio tour. It was much better then the guided one, as this one gave you the facts and then gave you the time to process the information. The other was just throwing fact after fact at you without a chance to understand what you just heard. For me , neither one was worth the money.

Hi, was it hard to hear docent give tour since they are required to wear masks right now? Thanks!

I cannot say specifically for this house as they were not wearing them when I went on the tour; however, I think it will depend on the individual giving the tour (are the soft spoken or not), how close you are to the docent, and how many individuals are on the tour who may be making noise. It was a neat house and I would recommend going.

How long should we allow to tour this home? Trying to plan out our upcoming visit. Thank you!

The outside grounds are self-guided and took approximately 30 min. The guided tour of the home was about an hour.
