A pleasant day spent wandering around the grounds and a glimpse into the past life of a plantation. The house is not original to the plantation era, but the house tour gives an interesting history of the current house through its various incarnations. The house has period pieces owned by the family, some dating back to plantation days. This property is not as spectacular as Middleton which is just a few miles up the road on the river, but worth seeing. The nature tram gave some interesting insights into the alligators and other wildlife as well as some information on the rice growing history of the region. Again not as extensive or detailed as Middleton. Beware buying books in the gift shop as they are marked up above the list cover prices. The book I purchased was marked 39.99, but when you peel the magnolia price sticker, the cover price was $32.50: a rather greedy markup on top of the 100% profit typically built in by the publisher in the cover price. The same hardcover book is available on Amazon for $17.99.

The grounds were beautiful. Took the train tour around and then the tour of the house. Both were very informative. Highly recommend it as a stop to your trip to Charleston.

We stopped here on our port stop in Charleston - ended up canceling the Fort Sumpter tour as peeps on TripAdvisor mentioning you can spend a whole day here. It's about half hour drive from the port (about $25 Lyft each way). We did the house tour too. Do note this is not a former plantation mansion like Gone With the Wind. The former plantation homes burned down twice - once from fire and once bc it was torched in the Civil War. Basically this home was rebuilt post Civil War as a 4 room cabin then added onto by the plantation owners daughter who married a wealthy Yankee.

I believe it was about $45pp - which is a little high for walking around gardens and a small house (our guide Millie was amazing!) BUT there is a bomb petting zoo (deer, peacocks, alligators etc) and a tram that takes you around and can drop you off at select points like the slave cabins and the swamp boardwalk. The swamp is THE Shrek swamp FYI - Dreamworks came out when they were developing Shrek and modeled the swamp after the one on these grounds.

The history is absolutely fascinating - this was one of the wealthiest plantations back in the day - rice plantation that grew the famed Carolina Gold rice which was sought after by the King of France. Great little gift shop that was the former servant living space and kitchen of the house. Beautiful gardens with multiple little bridges, magnolia and camellia trees and tons of towering oaks covered in Spanish moss. There's also a little cafe which served snacks, sandwiches, soup and drinks. Absolutely gorgeous grounds and def worth another visit!

I gave this a 4 rating based on the gardens & swamp trail BUT the Slavery to Freedom tour guide really needs to visit the International African American Museum in Charleston to learn about that city's slave history! She had no idea where the Carolina rice originated, while the museum explained that plantation owners stole slaves specifically from regions in Africa known for their knowledge of rice cultivation & ditch digging in swampy lands! She'd do well not only to visit that museum but also to recommend it on her tour, to visitors interested in the history of Charleston.

Overall this was a good experience. The house tour was very interesting and the tour guide was very knowledgeable. We enjoyed riding the tram around the grounds. My only real complaint is that I feel that the plantation is overpriced. You have to pay an extra $15 to be able to tour the house on top of the entry fee. If you are going in the off season, there really isn't much to see in the gardens, so I think there should be a discounted off season rate.

My sister and I were in town for the Charleston half, we decided to venture out to the Magnolia plantation. While it was chilly when we visited, the gardens and walking paths were amazing. We toured the house with Millie as our tour guide. As a former history teacher she was a wealth of knowledge. I would recommend getting on her tour because she was amazing!

Very interesting place with natural gardens. We learned a lot on the slave to freedom and the house tours.
Easily a half day is needed to enjoy the property without feeling rushed.
