Following a frustrating experience with another bicycle rental company in Charleston, my wife and I arrived at Affordabike without reservations but hoping to rent a couple of bicycles for the day. Affordabike came through with flying colors! The rental process was quick and efficient. After a quick overview of the bicycles we rented and the popular local bike routes we were on our way. What a fantastic day we had cruising the attractions around Charleston!
Given the efficient rental process, excellent customer service, and smooth riding bicycles we wish we would've gone to Affordabike first.

The guys at Affordabike were great. The cruisers are a bit slow, but honestly it was the perfect pace for my boyfriend and I to see Charleston, enjoy the views, and take it all in. The guys suggested a route for us and drew it on our map. It was just perfect. We only had one day to enjoy Charleston and this was the best way to maximize our time.

A few mixed reviews below, but my experience was great! Very comfortable bikes for the two of us and the employees were very helpful. Twice I went back asking for bike routes and directions. They were happy to advise. Fair rental rates.

My wife has wanted to bike the Ravenel Bridge since the first picture she saw of it. 2.7 miles, high enough for cruise ships and container ships to sail under without impeding auto traffic. We went to Affordabike to rent. I was skeptical that a 7 speed would get us over the bridge but then these are not your average seven speeds. Belt driven these were some of the smoothest shifting bikes I’ve ridden. We rode over from Charleston, toured the USS Yorktown, went to Red’s Ice House for lunch, rode back to downtown Charleston to make a purchase at a local shop and back to Affordable. Roughly 20 miles round trip and because it is pretty wide gearing we were ready for the evening out in Charleston.

I am going to preface this review by saying that I live in Charleston (that’s right, you get a true local’s opinion!). I enjoy playing tourist in my own town because there’s so much Charleston has to offer. Before I decided to buy a nice bike (which I also purchased from affordabike and you can read about this experience on yelp), I utilized their bike rental service to do some downtown exploring. The staff is very friendly and accommodating and the rental process is so easy! The bikes themselves are nice and are able to be adjusted to fit a wide range of people (I have very short legs and had no problem!). They also have baskets, which is helpful for storing your (small) shopping bags or local iced coffee while you ride. They also give you a lock so you can park your bike and peruse. The staff makes sure to go over city bike laws so you don’t go out blindly and they are always willing to give you some great local recommendations for thing sto do or places to eat. Definitely worth the visit if you’re looking to see downtown Charleston from the local perspective.

This is a warning! Do not get your bike repaired at Affordabike at the corner of King and Cannon!!!!!!!! I brought my bike to them after $89 worth of repairs, they lost my bike lock. When I dropped off my bike, the lock was wrapped around the bike and when they gave it back to me, it wasn't there. I NICELY asked them if they could give me their cheapest lock in the store because I couldn't take my bike home without being able to lock it up and they told me that I lost my bike lock and they didn't, so they couldn't help me. I remained very nice and calm but they insisted that I had to buy another bike lock ($30) from them and they wouldn't help me.

Afffordabike is the best bike rental store I have ever rented at in any state and I bike all year in every season including winters in the Boston area. Jeff is still there and knows his stuff. They have an entire new fleet of hybrid and cruises. It was $55 for the week and comes with a combo-lock and comfortable seats. Expert mechanics are on site and they sell bikes, great quality accessories and bike gear in the store. I was in bike heaven all week. You can keep your bike locked outside even if it’s raining and have 24 hour access to your bike.
Biking is awesome in Charleston if you don’t like hills. It’s all flat. Just turn your GPS on and explore the city without the need for parking.

Don't listen to negative reviews about bike quality. It's a rental bike. It needs to work, but you're not going to ride it that far, and the whole place is flat. I rented three belt drive bikes with gears and baskets. We rode them about 20 miles. They worked perfectly. My family had a good time. They're a bit utilitarian, but so what? I ride a lot, have more bikes than I need, spend what many spend on a used car when I get a new one and worked in bike shops for years. What you want is honest people who understand bikes. These guys are that. I'd rent from them again.

I would caution anyone against renting a bike from Affordabike, and if their customer service, quality and attitude about rentals could relate to bikes they sell, then I'd caution against buying here as well.
I'm an experienced (though hardly professional) road rider, who rides about 60 miles a week and have done so for at least the last 15 years. I've purchased several bikes and I've rented road bikes from at least 6 different shops in the last 5 years. Only one didn't come close to meeting expectations: Affordabike.
You don't have to read the rest, but if you want to, here's what happened in a nutshell:
I rented two bikes. The first brought out was in obvious bad condition. The second looked better but actually was way out of adjustment and shifted very poorly. Then a tire went flat. The spare was flat. The shop refused to support us after the bike failure because of, ostensibly, where we had wandered to, but we were 4 miles from the shop. Then they charged us $60 to retrieve the bikes from 4 miles away. Then they refused to refund us for a whole day that we had paid for but didn't have the bikes (not even counting the day on which we couldn't continue our ride). Then they were incredibly rude and hostile and threatening in person. The owner really has a self-control issue.
If you check Yelp reviews you will see a number of customers who've had similar experiences
Here's the longer story:
1. First bike brought out had a very visibly rusted out chain. That should really never be the case. I had to point it out after which the employees said that they would change it, but ultimately just brought me out a different bike. Fine.
2. Before leaving I asked about the air in the tires. They weren't sure what the pressure was so I asked him to pump to 110lbs, which is what I always ride.
3. First ride was fine but the bike clearly wasn't in good shape. The chain was rubbing against the guides in many of the gears, making a pretty loud noise. Shifting was not very smooth. OK, not great, but I guess acceptable for a rental bike (none of the other 7 bikes I've rented in the last 5 years (some from the same shop) had this problem).
4. Second ride the chain came off during a routine shift. Almost never happens to me, but OK, I just stopped and put it back.
Shortly after that, the rear tire came up flat, though there wasn't any obvious bump, obstacle etc. that should've caused this. OK, that happens. So I replaced the rear tube and got the wheel back on. Upon restarting, I quickly realized though that the second tube was not holding air. I had checked the rim for issues and didn't see any so that seemed unlikely the cause. But, whatever, I was out there now in my SPD cleat shoes and no tube. It was before opening time for the shop, so lacking any way to get the bike back and not able to walk the 4 miles or so in bike shoes back to the shop we (my wife was with me on another "hybrid" bike of theirs--which is not really a hybrid bike--story for another day) decided to lock up the bikes at a gas station quite close to us that had a bike rack, and get an Uber back to our hotel.
Our plan was to ask the bike shop to swing by and pick up the bikes and then we'd decide if it would be better to get them fixed or just end the rental. We were about 4 miles away and 8 mins driving from the shop.
I called them and explained that I had gotten a flat and that the spare was defective and where we locked the bikes. I asked them to pick up the bikes and was told "no way". It WAS a busy weekend, I'll grant them that. So I said that it didn't matter if they picked up the bikes right away but hopefully at some time that day they could. They promised to call back and let me know, but never did. So I walked the 1.5 miles from my hotel to the shop to check in with them later in the day. Was told that they still hadn't been able to reach the owner or to do anything about the bikes. I wasn't too worried because they were not high quality bikes and they were locked in a public place so I told them to let me know when they could pick up the bikes. Nothing more was heard. That night we wrote them a letter via their customer service link on the website again explaining what had happened and our request.
Got a long email back from the owner stating that, since we were "off the peninsula" there was nothing that they could do to help us--"hadn't I read the fine print on the disclaimer"? Well, no, not actually. And no one in the shop told us they wouldn't support us there, even as they were giving us a route there. Truth is, we were less than 4 miles from the shop. He also suggested in the email that we should have: a) walked the bike back to the shop or b) get and Uber and put the bike in an Uber (would the Uber driver have liked that? don't think so).
He did pick up the bikes 1.5 days after we were stranded but charged us $60 to take the failed bikes 4 miles. Then he refused to refund us for time we couldn't use. Worst bike shop experience I've had over 20+ years and from at least 6 different shops I've rented from.

Charleston can be seen well by bicycle and, if you are a cyclist and want to go to the beach, a bicycle can get you there. Affordabike, on upper King Street, close to Visitor Center, offers not only beach cruisers, but multi-speed hybrids and road bikes. (You will need a multi-speed if you want to go over any bridges.) Excellent customer service.
