Interesting and Educational
jun. 2019 • Par
We discovered while visiting Angel Tree. We received about a 20 minute private tour with a ranger.
He showed us the hatchery and educated us on the plight of the sturgeon they study there. Well worth the time spent. Probably took about a half hour total. Recommended

Disappointed
jun. 2019 • Par
All the tourist books suggested a visit.
The facility is small.
We couldn’t tour since the attendees where going to Lunch.
Long drive for nothing.
They are closed on Mondays.
Think visitors after a very long drive in this out of way place.
Would be able to be accommodated.
Should be mentioned on website

Good stop on the island

My husband and I stopped by while visiting Wadmalaw Island today. The ranger gave us a very informative tour of their work with basically the Atlantic Sturgeon. We enjoyed the trail that had interpretative signs along the way. My husband is a fisherman but not in this part of the country. The ranger answered his questions in regards to local fish and techniques used to catch them.

Great Eco stop

My husband and I like to stop at fish hatcheries when we see signs for them during our travels. We are going to start looking on-line for them before we travel to incorporate them into our plans. This decision was made after our visit to the Bears Bluff Natl Fish Hatchery. We happened to see the sign on our way to the Charleston Tea Plantation. We arrived while the hatchery was closed for lunch and walked the foot trails for a bit. We arrived back at the buildings just as Gena arrived back from lunch. She gave us a wonderful tour of the facility. This hatchery was different from others we have visited. Others raise fish to stock local lakes, rivers and streams. This hatchery is raising and studying Atlantic sturgeon in an attempt to help the species recover. We didn't know Atlantic Sturgeon are on the endangered list! They have tanks of sturgeon at various ages, the largest/oldest at about 8 feet long. Gena told us all about their research and the great things they have learned about sturgeon which could make a big difference. Adults and kids would enjoy visiting this facility. The walking path and surrounding area were very nice as well.

Beautiful Location
apr. 2016 • Alene
This is a beautiful location and even though I never saw anyone, the walking trail was a very nice half mile walk along the water with informational signs posted along the way. I came on a Friday around noon and it wasn't until I was leaving that I noticed the sign posting tour days and hours.
Just so no one else makes the mistake, the hatchery is opened from 7:30am to 4:00pm Monday through Friday, at which time anyone can take a self guided tour. The self guided tour is great for seeing scenery, but all the fish are in buildings and I was unable to see them.
Guided tours can be given Tuesday through Thursday from 8:00am to 12:00pm and 1:00pm - 3:30pm. I am assuming (12-1pm is their lunch since it is a government facility)

Ranger made it Great!
mar. 2016 • Par
We weren't sure if we would enjoy our visit when we arrived, since we didn't see anyone who seemed available to help us. We walked a couple of the trails. We tried to peer into a few holding tanks without much luck. We were about to leave when a ranger gave us an awesome tour! We saw sturgeon from very young and small to 8' and 15 years old! We were glad we took the trip out there.

Secrative Dinosaurs - Sturgeon
sep. 2015 • Familie
A beautiful drive out arbor-ed country roads to this remote destination. It's important to remember that this isn't a tourist destination but a working wildlife research center. There is a small staff keeping the place in good condition - from walking paths to vehicles to pools of salt and also fresh water fish, research tanks and some plant species.
It was a beautiful day as we walked along the estuary self-guided tour with our 2 year old grandson. Be sure to wear bug spray and close toed shoes, also bring yourself some water and snack. Bathrooms are available upon request. Remember the emphasis of this facility is research. When we made the trip the out door salt water pools were being redone so there were no drum or other salt water fish to view.
We spoke with a Fish and Wildlife Officer who was very welcoming and enthusiastic. She even put down the mechanical task she was doing to give us a fabulous, informative tour. We got to see the sturgeon at all their stages of development; hatchings, one, two, three, four year olds and adults. Females can be 8 feet long and weigh 200 pounds!!! It was a once in a life-time event to see these dinosaurs and simultaneously receive such an excellent narration of their status and behaviors. Unforgettable.

Not the most welcoming place...

I didn't feel comfortable here. No signs of welcome or people to greet. We looked at the beautiful reflections in the pond and left.
