Cruisin to the Opera House

Went on the 10th of July 2021 and loved this historic site and CRUISIN was the show. Amazing time and was informed that this was the best crowd of people that have been their since reopening. That is outstanding!!! We will be back and hope to see you there also.
Enjoy, we sure did.

The tour of the Opera House was conducted by Thomas. He did an excellent job of explaining the history and culture that had led to its construction and preservation. A truly unique and unexpected treasure!

Worth the stop, go for it !

We were in Deadwood and took the short drive to Lead. The old Opera House looked interesting. We tried the main doors and they were locked. But there was a shop featuring local artists in a front corner. We went in and looked around, chatted with the nice ladies running the store. The subject turned to the Opera House itself. Long story short, we were getting a full blown tour by the Director no less. She showed us the intense restoration going on (all done with volunteers). You see there was a fire some years ago. We saw many "before and after" examples of the work in progress. You really need to see this if you are anyone with historical or theatrical tastes. We figured we had timed things just right because we were shown everything! And thoroughly enjoyed our tour. Take a break from the Deadwood Casino's and get over to Lead and check it out.

Beautiful historical building still under renovation

Beautiful historical building under renovation since fire years ago. Fully functional Opera House at moment with excellent up to date exhibits.

Found the Opera House and awaited the young lady to arrive for a tour of the building. Place was started by the mine under the care of Mrs. Hearst. Interesting that the mine company did take care of their people.

The Opera House was used for bowling alley, swimming pool and general public enjoyment. A fire started in the main hall and destroyed a lot of the area. The pool is no longer used because the new floor had to be supported in the pool below.

The docent that we had gave us a lot of the history of what is being accomplished to bring the Opera House to visual appearance. It is currently used for plays, shows etc throughout the year. The acoustics in the Opera House are great. The docent sang to show us.

We were treated to see the old pool area and the upstairs area. Please leave a donation to support their efforts on renewal.

Historical site- fun to see stuff from old days

The theater was nicely kept and still beautiful. Upstairs’ display was interesting to see and think about old days in Lead.

We have attended several presentations at the Opera House and they were wonderful, it's really neat to have local people who love to put on plays and concerts. The Opera House is also a historic building here in Lead and it's wonderful to go through the building.

Cowboy Christmas

We went to the Cowboy Christmas (there has been 9 Years of the Cowboy Christmas programs). Again this one was as beautiful as the others.

We enjoy going to events here and supporting their efforts to restore this beautiful building that had been severely damaged in a fire.

I would strongly suggest that if given the opportunity, for locals and travels stop in, see what is being performed, and if possible support this wonderful facility.

A theater built by a gold mine

From its construction in 1914 until a catastrophic fire in 1984, the Homestake Opera House was the center of community life and lifelong education in Lead, South Dakota. Today, the Historic Opera House Society is dedicated to its restoration use and preservation for future generations. The Society's focus is on fundraising to acquire funds to complete the restoration of the theater and recreation center to bring back "the jewel of the Black Hills" to its original 1914 glory. Located at 313 West Main Street, when opened, the theater sat 1,000 people and the building also housed a heated indoor swimming pool, a library, a billiard hall, a smoking room, a bowling alley and a social hall. In 1984, the theater portion was nearly destroyed by fire. It sat empty for 11 years. In 1995, the building was purchased from the city by Jerry Aberle, a former Homestake engineer. A non-profit organization was founded in 1998 and $3 million was raised to begin restoration and other improvements. In 2008, the first country theater production in 25 years was celebrated. In 2016, a new interpretative center opened to provide information on the history of the Historic Homestake Opera House. In 2009-2018, the restoration and reconstruction continues but the venue continues to feature tours, concerts, theater productions and educational field trips. It is interesting to tour a building that played such an important part in the history of the region.
