Walk about the place before you draw a conclusion. It looks barren, but there is a feel that builds on you. Nice easy walk. Gets you out of the car and in touch with the world around you. You can experience something you can only feel inside. Read the signs and displays... take it in.

Spirit Mound Historic Prairie in Vermillion, South Dakota was part of the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804 and it’s easy to see why they wanted to explore the mound. The tranquil mound is worth a short stop to immerse yourself in the beautiful prairie grass and bright wildflowers. Birds serenade as you take the curving path to the top. It’s a gradual incline and there are benches and interpretive signs along the way. Once at the summit it’s not hard to imagine the thousands of prairie roaming bison that Lewis and Clark observed.
We visited in July and we had the park all to ourselves. Spirit Mound is a great place for young kids and teenagers to get some energy out if you have been traveling all day. There are lots of interesting Native American history at Spirit Mound so be sure to read up before you get there. Native Americans like the Sioux, Omaha, and the Otoes believed that the mound was occupied by spirits that killed any human who came near. It will help you to appreciate your peaceful walk just a little bit more. The park is open year-round and there is no entrance fee. There are some picnic tables and vault toilets available.

Nice walk though the prairie. Signs on its Native American significance and Lewis and Clark connections as well as local wildlife. Pretty wildflowers and wildlife if you look.

I visited Spirit Mound for a hike and that is what I got. It is a short hike up and back, nothing at all strenuous and not that much to see except a slightly elevated view of the prairie. The cool thing is that this was a stop for Lewis and Clark and they talked about it in their diary of the trip. There are signs along the way offering a bit of interpretive information, mostly on the Lewis and Clark visit and a bit on local animals. So, for history buffs like me, it is pretty cool. For everyone else, it is not really worth the trip.

Spirit Mound stands tall in the flat ancient Missouri river valley. Lewis and Clark noted Spirit Mound in their travels. It also has significance to Native Americans. The hike up the mound is a little less than a mile. The surrounding prairie has been reclaimed and is thriving with numerous native glasses and plants. It is a spectacular place to go on a clear night. Full moons, star gazing and shooting stars.

I was intrigued by the name: Spirit Mound, and by the Lewis & Clark history. When I arrived there were no other visitors. It is a quiet place, but being alone made it even more special. The walk is easy. Fortunately it was not very warm on the day of my visit, because it is not possible to escape from the sun on a hot day. The view from the top was OK. Only when you look west, the view is disappointing because of the condition of the vegetation.

Spirit Mound is known best as the one place that we know Lewis and Clark stood on their journey across America. The journals describe "a sea of buffalo as far as the eye can see." It to the indigenous people here, Spirit Mound was a place inhabited by little people who could bless you or harm you as they saw fit. They warned Lewis and Clark about visiting it, but they chose to walk the nine miles from the Missouri River north to see it.

Today Spirit Mound is a state park that is being restored to tall grass prairie, as it was when Lewis and Clark first saw it. You can ride a bicycle north from Vermillion on Route 19 (about 7 miles along a wide bike path) or you can drive and park in the lot there. A trail leads from the parking lot to the top of the Mound and the view is breathtaking. In the summer, you'll see many wildflowers, birds and butterflies including the fritillary.
