Can anyone explain or give any information on the (bronze ?) statue at the Douglas Dam Overlook. Or even the history of it? I can’t find anything on the web about it. Thanks.

The viewing area may have a better view of the Appalachians than anywhere else. It also has a picnic area. On a clear day this place is worth making a special trip, 1-2 hours out of your way.

If you are trying to find something new but want to be able to safe distance this is a spot for you. The views are gorgeous & if you are lucky you may see an Eagle. We saw a number of critters scurrying around. You can drive up to a lovely viewing area that has rest rooms. There is a lower parking area too. There is a small campground here too. Bring a picnic & enjoy the birds & squirrels. A very peaceful area.

We come here to see the views of the Smokies without the bumper to bumper traffic of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. For someone just passing through the area on the interstate, and not staying overnight, or looking for a campsite next to a very pretty lake, this is a good day or overnight stop. The overlook displays several major Tennessee mountain tops of the Appalachians, including Mount LeConte and a telephoto zoom lens will be rewarded on clearer days! If visiting in the fall and winter months, be prepared to see the lake at a non-full pool level, as their priority is given to UT football traffic in the Knoxville area and keeping the Tennessee River and downstream lakes at higher levels. Another plus is they have VG picnic tables and a well maintained rest room at the overlook.

Very clean and well maintained the picnic area is well lighted for after dark use. There are some trails for short hikes and the restroom were clean for a public area. This is ran by the TVA...

This park is a hidden gem! Our campsite was right on the river. If you are a fisherman you can fish right from your campsite.

The overlook above the damn provides a spectacular panoramic view of the dam, lake and surrounding mountains and is just perfect for sitting and looking and admiring. Then going down below to watch the cranes and cormorants fish - maybe even see a bald eagle fly in - is great fun and relaxing.

Weather was not the best when we stopped by here. We was staying down the road at anchors down rv resort and would ride out to see the wildlife. But the weather didn’t stop the wildlife or the people. Several folks out there watching the Eagles feeding. And there was boats out there fishing. And thanks to one local photographer out there he helped us identify different birds. If you have binoculars, take them.

Go down Douglas Dam road and take the turn for Douglas Dam Pavilion and Overlook. You cannot miss it.
Can you fish there

We did see people fishing. There's a parking lot and a nice shore, with grassy area and sidewalks, as well as some picnic tables.

We drove around the lake and across it, but never saw a sign or turn-off for the dam. If we are coming from Sevierville on Rt 66, how do we get to the dam and visitor center?

From Highway 66 - the main road in Sevierville, take highway 338 or also named Douglas Dam Road on the right at an Exxon station on 66. Travel 338 for a few miles and you will cross a bridge over the French Broad River and you will see the Dam on the right as you cross the bridge. The next right will allow you to visit the Dam and follow the signs. You can view the Dam from above or below to see the power plant and base of the Dam.
