Just saw this on trip advisor. I expected just a dusty fenced off area but wad very pleasantly surprised. Well maintained, informative and respectful.
The informative panels placed throughout the grounds are wonderful be sure to stop and gain a little knowledge about this historical area. Well worth the stop

The grounds are still beautifully kept. What a moving story to know this family took it upon themselves to make sure these soldiers got the respect they deserved.

About 1500 Confererate soldiers buried here as a result of the battle on this flank. Takes your breath away to think of the killing in that type of war.

1400+ confederate soldiers buried here. Really interesting piece of history for those interested in civil war.
some good photo opps and you can go to the cemetery even if you dont want to do the tour of the rest of the grounds. close to town so not out of the way.. worth a stop.

This cemetery might offend some, but the care and respect that went into preserving these remains is commendable.

This is a must see after visiting Carnton. The cemetary is well kept. The story you hear on the home tour tells how 3 men were chosen to dig up the bodies buried 2 foot deep, identify and rebury. They received 5.00 per body. There is a book in the cemetary with all the names known, where they are buried. There are also monuments at the beginning of rows telling what state is represented and how many from that state are buried there.

A beautifully maintained cemetery with an incredible story. I visited after the tour of the house and battlefield. The care it took to identify and provide a place for the lives lost makes you reflect again on the loss of lives and families forever changed by the Civil War. It was a thought provoking and a sacred space.

This was the labor of one family who took it upon themselves to rebury 1481 Confederate soldiers who had been buried on the battlefield where they had fallen in unmarked graves and be placed in an orderly cemetery. The McGavock family members carefully identified over 900 of the fallen soldiers and arranged for markers for them. Very orderly and valuable for researchers and genealogists.

We were encouraged to stroll the grounds and cemetery after our Carnton house tour. Sobering walk to all the lives lost.
