This is one of the best tours you can take in Franklin, as the full stories of the people who lived here, the slaves who worked here, and the soldiers who fought here are told in great detail. I've been to Carnton many years before, and I must say while the history hasn't changed, the way it is interpreted, and presented certainly have changed in a positive way.

This was one of the premier plantations in middle Tennessee prior to the Civil War. You'll hear the stories of the McGavock family, as well as the enslaved people they owned. You'll hear how it was for people of the era to purchase other human beings, and split a family up in a sad, but casual-for-the-time way. And you'll hear the tragedy and horror of war, as the home wound up a part of one of the most vicious battles of the Civil War at Franklin, on Nov. 30, 1864.

Among the things you'll see are personal family items, an unusual two-story slave quarters building, and blood stains on the bedroom floors from where surgeries were performed after the battle.

All of this is told in rather vivid detail, and not just a by-the-numbers approach. What helps now are the well-knowledged tour guides who want you to experience both the home, and lives of those who invested parts of their lives here.

The grounds contain a garden, a family cemetery, a slave cemetery, and a two-acre Confederate soldier cemetery, containing the remains of over 1,400 Confederate soldiers killed in the Franklin battle. (U.S. soldiers were buried mainly at the Stones River National Cemetery, about 30 miles east.), the two-story slave quarters, and more.

You actually enter the home from the rear, so don't miss the opposite side view, and walk the historic entrance pathway. Also, you drive through what is called the Eastern Flank Battlefield in order to get to Carnton. This is the largest intact section of the 1864 battle left. Confederate soldiers from Carnton marched through these fields on their way to do battle at Franklin.

It's a grand historical experience on multiple levels, and I highly recommend it.

(This home is availabe for a combo ticket with two others historic Franklin homes - the Carter House, and Lotz House. All three are interconnected by the battle of Franklin, and you can get a discount for a two- or three-house ticket available at any of the three locations.)

Spectacular property filled with history and sadness. Visiting Rippavilla would be a nice lead into this property, we did it the other way, but the pieces fell together. The house is beautiful, and I cannot imagine what transpired when it became a make shift hospital. The graves are evidence of what happened on that site, and it stops and makes you think. Definitely a site to visit if you enjoy history or just seeing a beautiful Tennessee property.

Unique Civil War story about a house close to the battle used as a hospital. The family then buried the dead in a cemetery near the house. Tour included Civil War history and background info, story of the battle, story of the family who lived there. Lots of detail, house and outlying buildings are very nice.

The Carnton House was an interesting way to immerse ourselves in the Civil War Battle of Franklin (TN). Tickets can be purchased in advance online through the Battle of Franklin Trust or, as we did, on the day of in the gift shop. Carnton, a private residence, served as a field hospital for the battle. I appreciated how Christian, our tour guide, personalized the tour with stories of how the family and civilians were affected when they suddenly found themselves part of a Civil War battlefield. There are two cemeteries on the property. One for family, and the second, two acres the family set aside in 1866 for the final resting place of nearly 1,500 killed during the battle. The visitor's center has additional information and a gift shop, plus there are several outbuildings and a garden. Lovely grounds and story if you are interested in the Civil War/history.

I believe our guide was Joseph. We took the extended tour and this person was incredible. Certainly had the knowledge but that means nothing without the passion for what you do and he had it and then some. Highly recommend.

Civil war, the battle of Franklin, times of slavery, one family's destiny - all come alive in one place both during the highly informative guided tour, a quiet walk on the premises and a visit to the family and confederate cemetery nearby. This is a must visit place if you are ever in Franklin. A place to pause and ponder. Give yourself at least 2 hours here.

After reading a book about the battle in Franklin, my friend and I wanted to visit Carnton and the surrounding area. We really lucked out the day of our visit as we were the only two people on our tour. Sadly, we don't remember the name of our tour guide. a lovely young woman, who really knew her stuff! She was extremely knowledgeable and open to our many questions. Her love of the house came through ,and her stories of the family, and the part they played during and after the war brought the house to life for us .We would highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in this area and time frame.

I highly recommend seeing these historical civil war sites. My family and I purchased the combination ticket to see the Carnton Plantation, the Carter House and Rippa Villa. Each house is a little different from the others, but each has interesting architecture and furniture from the period. The guides were very well-informed at each location. (At least one had a PhD.) Each guided tour is about an hour. Parking is readily available. We enjoyed learning about the families living in these houses, and the history of this battle and were surprised to learn that there were 10,000 casualties. My one recommendation would be that the guides have a map of the area available. Since we were from out of town, we were not familiar with the terrain, the locations they referenced, the river, the railroad station, etc.
