We drove ourselves there and it was easy. Great views and worth the effort. We didn't stay too long due to the gasses as recommended by others. We went during the day so we didn't get to see lava but it was still a great view.

I have been to Masaya Volcano during the day and at night. Both experiences are nice but the night visit is better as you can see the lava glowing. Don’t over pay an expensive tour, you can just pay the entrance to the park and see the volcano for yourself (as long as you have a car). On the way down, stop at the visitor center and they will give you a history of the area.

Even though you have to be a long way away for safety reasons and you can only see this tiny part it IS worth going. It's a very experiential place so photos and videos won't do the trick.
Maybe one day they will invent heat resistant drones that can carry peope allow them to get closer to the lava.

Me hubiera gustado llegar antes para ver el atardecer pero el tour se organizó algo mal. Si se ve algo de lava pero es tan poco y hay tanta gente que quedé algo decepcionado.

Seriously, just go on your own and avoid getting charged a bucketload of money to visit the Masaya. It's a simple drive with a very nominal entrance fee to pay to get into the park itself. At the top, there isn't much to do apart from marvel at the crater and its surroundings. However, I still recommend paying the Masaya a visit since peeking into the center of a volcano isn't something you can do everyday. If you wish to see the intricacies of the crater, I suggest visiting during the day. However, if your goal is to see the lava in all its red, fiery glory, then a visit at night would be better.

There aren’t too many places in the world where you can look into the heart of an active volcano! Masaya Volcano is a must visit destination when visiting Nicaragua. Masaya's an active volcano and one of the few places in the world where you can see an active lava lake bubbling away. It's pretty cool being able to see the glowing red of the lava below you. It's particularly visible around dusk and then after dark. During the day it’s hard to see the glow of the lava, but you still see the smoke rising from the crater and there are nice views of the surrounding area from the top of the volcano. Due to the toxic gases that are released from the volcano, it’s recommended that you don’t stay up near the crater for more than 15 minutes. It gets cold up there, particularly after dark, so remember to bring something warm to wear while you’re up there.
The park is open from 9am until 8pm. There are 2 sessions in the day with different entry prices depending on the time. The 1st session's 9am til 4:45pm, and the entry fee during this time is cheaper - it's 150 cordobas for both foreigners and locals. Our recommendation is to see it just before sunset at the beginning of the evening session. So come as soon as you can after 5pm. Not only will you see an amazing sunset, But you'll also start to see the glow of the lava lake. If you come at that time it's $10 US for foreigners and $5 US for locals.

Hugo was a great help on our visit to Granada. We booked a night volcano tour with him. Having grown up in Miami, he speaks perfect English and was very knowledgeable about the geology and volcanoes. He gave a guided tour of the museum which made the experience much more meaningful. He also knew a lot about animals of the area, many different species of bats including vampire bats and parrots that have adapted to the sulfur gas. He was also able to get us into and out of the viewing area right away when I noticed other groups waiting line. Only a limited number of people can be near the volcano at one time. Hugo also arranged transport to Managua airport and I felt safe with the driver who drove carefully and not crazy fast or swerving. Look for them at the beginning of the 'restaurant road' The first business behind the big white house.
