We went to the Famine Museum and were so lucky to have Michael as our guide. He was passionate, knowledgable and brought the sad history to life. There are not many existing workhouses in Ireland, and it is a story that continues to need to be shared, so many thanks to the Council, and especially Michael for keeping the story alive. And Michael turned the sad story into one of hope, as he shared a song, The Isle of Hope, which he sang to us, and told us the story of the first immigrant to Ellis Island, Annie Moore. We are so grateful to have had this experience.

A must visit place with sad history. Those all who suffered and died here should never been forgotten. Men,women and children had to live and work in such poor conditions,we cant even imagine today

On a recent trip over to Rathdowney, Laois, researching our ancestry, we called at the Donaghmore, workhouse and museum. An enlightening, worthwhile experience, explaining the plight of all those unfortunate souls who back then had little choice.
Add to this the expertise of tour guide Michael Creagh, plus his poetry.
It is a must for everyone visiting the Emerald Isle.

Have passed by this workhouse many times and never stopped to visit, until Easter 2024. Our visit was so worthwhile. It was a very evocative and sad experience. We visited on a very cold day and we could only imagine how the workhouse inmates must have felt, wearing threadbare workhouse uniforms, in unheated buildings. Our volunteer guide ( a local) was very knowledgeable. He described horrific conditions within the workhouse in the mid 1800's. This is a huge site, but not all the buildings are open to the public yet. We hope funding can be found to enable the remaining buildings on this site to be opened (eg the infirmary). Be prepared to shed a tear at what you may learn from your guide...

We visited Donaghmore Museum as a group in October..Travelling by train to nearby Ballybrophy we were greatly surprised to be welcomed at the station by our host for the day, Michael Creagh..Welcome is putting it mildly, it was an arrival greeted by a song bearing the name of that very station. On to Donaghmore where we were greeted by Rhoda who along with Michael provided much welcome refreshments. Then the serious stuff of the tour . It was an emotional informative talk from Michael. He accompanied his talk with song and poetry, which added to the poignancy of what is such a part of our history. Ireland is rich with history, much of it heartbreaking and shrouded in despair. Yet when the story is humanised, it can also be beautiful. Wherever the history comes from and wherever the story is told, we can only hope it is told with the same passion that Michael relayed the story of those who, through unfortunate circumstances found themselves the wrong side of the walls of such institutions.

Sorry I am unable to provide that information, I think they will have a website, as when we visited it was still undergoing renovations, but I am sure it was open 11.00 and into the afternoon.
