Perfect day out in a lovely area of Dorset. You will definitely use your camera to get wonderful shots of swans. Feeding times are noon and 4pm with commentary from the Ranger and interesting 500 years of history. There is a shop and a cafe. I noted that the Swannery had accessible pathways for pushchairs and mobility scooters and plenty of seating if required.

The Swannery is pretty unique and extremely interesting. The area is very well laid out with accessible paths around the main features of the park. It was special that you could get quite close to the swns and their nests. they are obviously very used to visitors, but you need to give them enough space n... it is their home after all.
We went in the eral summer, so the swans had some chicks bet were also still sitting on eggs. It was interesting to see hoethey looked after both chicks and eggs.

Cygnets start to hatch at the end of May and consequently there were hundreds of cygnets to see when we visited on the 4th June. Lots to keep the kids (and adults) amused with friendly, chatty staff who were more than happy to tell you more about the swans. We had a wonderful time!

We couldn’t believe the number of nests, they were everywhere - on the paths, by the side of the paths and wherever you looked! Some of the cygnets were hatching so that was good to see. Lots of interesting information boards too

What a lovely place! There are two main walks around the swannery and it’s just fabulous to be able to get close to and see these fabulous birds. It was hatching season so there were little cygnets chirping and swimming about and mummy swans sat on nests keeping the eggs warm. There are 600 swans so they are literally everywhere! We also got the opportunity to go and feed the swans during feeding time which was very entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable.

Visited with my teenage son. What a lovely place. So nice to be able to walk among the swans and get so close to them, lovely watching them working as a team building their nests.

We learnt about the habitat of swans. It is a beautiful experience. It is amazing how the injured are take care, hoe the swans make pairs, hoe the swans hatch their little ones

Wonderful visit watching the swans couples (Cob & Pen) laying on eggs on the pre-prepared nests of reeds supplied by the Swannery staff . . .

Correction as witnessed directly (09-04-2022):
"At the start of the breeding season BOTH swans, (Cob) male & (Pen) female, build a large nest out of aquatic vegetation, in which the female usually lays between five and seven eggs, which BOTH cob & pen alternate to sit on to incubate for between five and six weeks."

Film Location:
The lagoon Sir David is talking about is the end of the "Dorset West fleet" where it is filmed, in Abbotsbury Swannery, the only place in the world where you are able to walk through the heart of a protected colony of nesting Mute Swans.
During the nesting (end Mar - end April) and hatching period (end May - end June), it is possible to be standing next to hatching eggs and if you’re very lucky, you may even witness a cygnet being born right before your eyes.

How far to walk from the X53 bus in Abbotsbury?
Mojoblue717

No idea where the X53 bus stops. But to get from Abbotsbury Village Centre to the entrance to the Swannery would be a good 30 minute walk down a winding country lane. We drove there.. Hope that's a help

Hi I am visiting Weymouth for the 1st time. I will be visiting with my 7 and 3 year old daughter. What attraction from the three (swannery, subtropical gardens and children’s farm) would you say would be the most practical and enjoyable for children without them getting bored?
Ralph G

Probably children's farm, and then the Swannery. Gardens beautiful, but probably boring for youngsters
Is it possible to visit the Swannery and the Botanical Gardens in the same day? Is the Swannery a place you spend all day or just several hours? Thank you :)

What type of food are the swans fed .We have three swans on our local river which is polluted and short of natural food . We know bread is not good to feed them but it's what most people feed them...Have you any suggestions as what better food we could offer them.?
Sian T

RSPB can give advice. phone the swannery or look online? Vegetables, potatoes and grain are recommended I think.
Can we bring bread to feed them?
Della C
Borehamwood, UK305 bidrag
No, bread should never be fed to ducks, swans any waterfowl really.
What is the ball at the entrance?
