We popped in to have a look at the manor, worthwhile a short visit if you are in the area, quite a hidden little gem!

We visited while walking the North Dorset Trailway. The manor looked really interesting.

Wheelchair access
Although the website clearly states that the house is accessible, there is quite a big step to get in. The way in is quite straight and a mobile ramp could easily be provided here to get in - maybe there was one and it has gone off for maintenance?

We found this by accident , just apssing on the nroad, well worth 30 minutes to look at it. The wooden beams are incredible. It could do with a bit more information around, but it is free to get in

Whilst in the area, I visited Fiddleford Manor, expecting just ruins (because the English Heritage sign said that there was no entry charge). I was a little unsure whether to try the door, but yes, it was unlocked and there was no-one inside asking for money!
What a beautiful gem of a building it was, lovely architectural detail with informative panels, but above all else, what a wonderful atmosphere to take in.
Use the signed, free car park (good for a picnic, too) and you will see the pathway by the information board. Sometimes, horses in the paddock will come to greet you!
Other parts of the building are in use as a private home. After your visit, why not stroll down to the River Stour (5 minutes) and enjoy the view, maybe taking a paddle in the shallow water on the far bank if it's hot?

This is a beautiful, quiet, unspoilt destination. We accessed it, by chance, from the nearby trailway. There is no entrance fee, no gift shop, just a beautifully preserved house which visitors are free to explore. There are small notices giving some background information. Be careful you don't try to go into the adjoining private property by mistake, though, as we did!

Good to see a few of the old manors rooms. Part of the manor is privately owned and not open to the public. You get a brief history of the time.

This is a gem of a find. A beautifully restored Manor House from the 1300s in the heart of the countryside. The roof beams are simply magnificent and the restoration a credit to English Heritage.
Not to be missed!

Herein is an atypical site in so many ways including being a relatively intact knight's home; it's quite unusual for English Heritage (I'm a big fan gobbling up options and thrice renewed member) to offer a free site that isn't essentially a mere remnant, derelict or skeleton of its former self.

Fiddleford Manor is attractive, spacious and robust in its inclusions, yet once again, oddly enough is unsupervised in terms of either guides or volunteers, though it offers numerous helpfully descriptive placards throughout.

An otherwise undisturbed walkthrough, as occurred in our case, provides an aura conducive to fantasy and wanderlust. It's fun to imagine what might have been happening inside when the suit of armor was left hanging in the hallway.

A few inclusions: a most interesting artistic beamed ceiling, impressively well designed interior including second floor layout, painting of Angel Gabriel on a wall, (another of Mary, the mother of Jesus, has devolved into but a vague unrecognizable trace). Leave or maintain all ashistorically suggestive please, but this place could easily be converted to a comfortable contemporary upscale home.

Well worth a peek.
